Title: Young, Joseph Scotland
Post by: Hayjood on Sunday 09 July 17 04:13 BST (UK)
My great grandad David Young came to New Zealand on the ship 'Storm Cloud' 1861 with his parents Joseph & Jane Young. I have found a passenger list but no Christian names or ages so a bit vague. I am hopeful that someone can help me find info about Joseph & Jane. Where did they live, get married & where, parents names & names of other siblings. David was 6 yrs when they arrived in NZ. And they sailed from Glasgow. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Were any of David's siblings with them and if so what were their names and ages? What was the date of departure? If it was after the date of the census (7 April 1861) you should be able to find them in the census.

Looking at the IGI on FS, there are seven families with husband Joseph Young and wife Jane having family in Scotland between 1850 and 1870. However four of these can immediately be ruled out because one or more children were born after 1862, leaving three couples to consider.

Joseph Young and Jane Wishart had
Joseph, born 23 March 1856
Mary and Margaret (twins), born 7 January 1858.
Allison, born 17 March 1860
all in Bathgate, West Lothian. This family appears to be in Bathgate in the 1861 census index: Joseph, 37; Jane, 37; Alexander, 19; Janet, 18; Jane, 14; David, 11; Andrew, 9; Catherine, 7; Allison, 1.
Joseph Young, aged 1, died in Bathgate in 1858. Margaret Young, aged 0, died in Bathgate in 1858. Another Margaret Young, no age given in index, died there in 1860. I wonder if this could be her twin Mary, with an error in the record? Another Joseph Young, no age in index, died in Bathgate in 1860. The age of Jane's son David seems to rule this out as being your Young family, but how sure are you of his age on arrival in New Zealand? You can check by viewing the original documents on the SP web site.

Joseph Young and Jane Cameron had
John, born 2 January 1856
Alexander, born 14 January 1858
both in Edinburgh

Joseph Young and Jane Yule had
John Yule, born 5 July 1850
in Liff Benvie and Invergowrie, Angus

Of course it is quite possible that your Joseph and Jane are not in the records at all.

Thank you ROSIE7 & FORFARIAN - That's great information!  I need some time to absorb it but the exciting thing is that my Grandmother Jane(Jean) Weir - nee Young(daughter of David & Mary) had a middle name Wishart & my Aunty is also Jean Wishart Drummond (nee Weir) & she has no idea where the name Wishart came from so to me, that is the link. I have an article written in Dunedin paper about David & Jane celebrating their Diamond wedding 1939 & David was 90 & Jane 80 & ship 'Storm Cloud' arrived 30 July 1861 with Young family. Passenger list shows Young/Joseph-wife & family (7) plus a David Young & family (2). No idea if related but probably. Have death records at Portobello for Joseph/Jane plus David & Mary. All very helpful stuff. Thank you both so much.  Can I reply to you individually or is this ok??

Gosh Rosie17 - you have been busy! That's fantastic info & you have definitely cracked it! Based on death date & age, David was 11 yrs when they came to NZ (I thnk I said 6) so the Joseph & Jane Wishart correct family. All makes sense. And solved the mystery of Wishart!  Thanks too FORFARIAN - I think you got it first up. Just don't understand the abbreviations IGI & FS? Bit 'green' at this! ROSIE - can I access Anc....y for that info without signing up?
Thanks so much both of you!

Sorry. International Genealogical Index at Family Search www.familysearch.org - useful, but not to be trusted 100%.

Hi Cousin Hayjood,

I have a lot of info on the Youngs, Joseph & Jane are my great-great grandparents I have them traced back well into the 1700's and forward on most lines into the mid 1900's. The Weir line was in contact with my grandparents and great aunts until the 1960's. It would be great to hear from you, its 158 years since they arrived in Dunedin on the Storm Cloud with 6 children and 2 more were born in Dunedin/Hoopers Inlet. Some of the suggested links are incorrect but I would welcome contact. Message me and will provide my email details.

Regards
Andrew Stuart Young
