Thank you so much! I will take you up on your offer. I will send you the names and dates of a few people that have stumped me. I do have a general question… What was life like on these farms in the 1700s and 1800s? I have done some research online, so I have a little idea. I think about the very long days of summer you have, but also the very short days in winter. Did they work through the winter? I assume they had livestock and animals, but in terms of planting, that must have been a short season. I know there were some years with bad crops, so that must have been very hard on people.
My relatives moved to Connecticut between 1890 and 1906. They were tradesmen and work mostly in construction. In fact, my great grandfather built many houses in Bridgeport Connecticut that still stand today. They were very involved in the Swedish Baptist church in the United States. I believe one of the reasons they moved, besides economic opportunity, had to do with religious freedom of expression.
We are all spread out across the United States now, but most of us live in Florida and have for decades.
Thanks again so much for all your help! I will send you a couple of requests shortly.

I will send this one in 2 parts. The 1906 marriage record of Carl A. Nilsson and Ida V. Andersson. I can't find Carl listed in Tornevalla or Normlosa between 1900 and 1906. If you can, that would be great. I want to know if he and Ida lived near each other or on the same farm prior to getting married. They left for the US a month after they married.

Hi Paul
I will continue here.

Hi
Here are the 3 last household pages for Karl:
1901: Törnevalla AIIa:2 (1900-1904) Bild 222 / sid 212 (AID: v179658.b222.s212, NAD: SE/VALA/00395)

Ian

I take it that you have Ida's last household page:
Normlösa AIIa:1 (1898-1909) Bild 118 / sid 108 (AID: v177591.b118.s108, NAD: SE/VALA/00261)
She travelled with her father.
Added - Maybe not together but at the same time anyway: Ship leaving Gothenburg on 11 July 1906.
Ian
-
I noticed that the 2 parishes are quite a distance apart. So, how they met is anyones guess, perhaps at a market or a dance, but they didn't work or live near each other.
Here is the same marriage record but from Törnevalla too:
Törnevalla C:9 (1895-1930) Bild 156 / sid 17 (AID: v179666.b156.s17, NAD: SE/VALA/00395)

Thanks! I had found a couple of those bits of information (where they last lived and when they left for Copenhagen and finally New York) on my own yesterday, but since I didn't see this thread, I didn't know you had found out even more. Thanks for providing all of the references.
One question: did they marry at the Törnevalla church or in Normlösa? I did find both marriage records and it looked like the marriage might have happened at the Törnevalla kyrka.
When they arrived in New York, they were detained for three days and finally were admitted into the US on July 28, 1906.
I will have a few more requests coming soon. Thanks again for all of your help!
Paul

Hi
They married in Normlösa. He was mentioned in Törnevalla because I suppose he was living there.

Ian:
Thanks so much!! You are amazing!! I'm off to work but will digest all this info tonight.
I spent probably a dozen hours a few months ago trying to trace another relative...Emma Gustava Swensdotter/Swensson. I think I figured out most of it. She ended up in Stockholm at Hedvig Eleonora (possibly twice) and Jakob before moving to the US in 1889.
She was born 24 Sep 1866 in Ölme, Värmland. She was born an illegitimate child. She lived in Ölme until 1885 when she went to Stockholm. Her mother was Britta Johansdotter born 11 Oct 1843 in Ölme. Her stepfather was Karl Fredrik Stolt. I believe her biological father was Sven Gustaf Petersson Sjögren born 26 Feb 1844 in Ölme. Emma married in the US in 1895.
If you have time, could you check on her around her birth? I don't have the links handy, but I can get them tonight. I want to be sure Sven Gustaf Peterson Sjögren is in fact her true biological father.
Thanks again!
Paul

Hi
Cheers Paul.
I am pretty sure this is Nils Magnus: Högsby CI:4 (1780-1832) Bild 128 / sid 249 (AID: v39050.b128.s249, NAD: SE/VALA/00160)

Hi Ian:
Thanks for this! I'm just getting home and looking through all of the references that you sent. One of them you mentioned earlier for Nils had his birthday three days off (16 of Sept vs 19) from this record, but that doesn't surprise me since most of the time they only put 1806 with no month or day. I am a direct descendent of his, so having his parents' names will help me trace back another generation or two.
Thanks again. Let me know if you find anything out regarding Emma Gustava Svensson and her biological father.
Paul
-
Hi Ian:
I just went over everything you sent me today. I can't tell you how easy you made it for me!
Can you translate these few words?
Thanks, Paul
-
Also this word. Thanks!
-
Hi
The first one says "Hinderslöshet bet......." - without digging further it usually means that someone is free to marry, in other words a spinster or a batchelor. Perhaps he married shortly after the date stated.
The second one says "frikallad" - meaning in this case, exempt from national service, perhaps because of illness, family problems or of that ilk.
Ian
-
Got it! Thanks, Ian.
-
This I believe to be Anna Lisa Pehrsdotter's birth - 28 July 1811: Kråksmåla C:1 (1760-1818) Bild 179 / sid 349 (AID: v39949.b179.s349, NAD: SE/VALA/00193)
Her family: Kråksmåla AI:2 (1813-1819) Bild 144 / sid 271 (AID: v23044.b144.s271, NAD: SE/VALA/00193)
Pehr and Peter are known to be interchangeable in Sweden at this time.
Ian
-
Excellent! This helps me fill out my tree.
Thanks again,
Paul
-
Hi Ian:
Can you translate the top part of both pages? I had Anna's mother as Sanna Persdotter. And I had Anna born in December 1811 as illegitimate, but I could be wrong. I had found a birth record for a Susanna that matched up with the date of her birthday in 1784, but I wasn't sure I had the right person.
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v23044.b97.s179&page=main/index
Hopefully this link works is I am trying this on my iPad. Let me know.

Hi Paul,
"Sara är blind och har af fattigmedlen.
Lisa och Sannas fader hette Per Gustafsson och var broder till Nils Gustafsson."
Sara is blind and has welfare support for being poor.
Lisa and Sanna's father was called Per Gustafsson and was the brother of Nils Gustafsson.
I must add that I cannot be sure of my findings to do with Nils and Anna Lisa are accurate. I think it best for you to disprove me.
Ian
-
Can you say what you don't understand on the left page please.
Ian
-
Got it.
Where is says "defs"....something like that. Does it mean "hers"?
I agree with you, it has been difficult to be sure on these two people. But you have much more experience than I do in this, so I really appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Paul
-
The word is "dess" and yes it means "her" or "his" depending on whom it relates to.
Ian
-
Ok. That makes sense.
Thanks,
Paul

Hi Ian:
Here are links for Emma Gustava Svensdotter, oäkta, born 24 Sept 1866 in Ölme:
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v9016.b53&page=main/index
Another birth reference...and I see Sven Gustava Petersson. Is he the father?
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v9017.b50&page=main/index
1861-1865 what I believe are Emma's parents (unmarried): Sven Gustav Petersson and Britta Johansdotter (Jonasdotter)
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v8985.b194.s188&page=main/index
1866- Britta's father (a widower) and her sisters, her daughter Emma, and who I think is Emma's father Sven just below:

1881 Emma at the bottom
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v8991.b132.s477&page=main/index
1885 Emma moves to Hedvig Eleonora Stockholm
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v9001.b125&page=main/index
I believe she moved to Jakob Stockholm around 3 May 1886 but then went back to Hedvig Eleonora on or around 30 May 1888 and then left for America on 18 July 1889 (I think). She may have left Gothenburg on a ship around 26 Jul 1889 to Hull, England and then to New York.
When you have time, can you check to see if I made any mistakes? Also, there is some writing on some records that I think is important but cannot read. Lastly, if you can find her actual movements in Stockholm from 1885 until 1889, that would be great. I found some references on the ancestry website, but I can't find them on the arkivdigital website.
No rush...just when you have time. She is my 2nd great grandmother.
Thanks, Paul
-
Hi
Yes Sven Gustaf Peterson is the father. The records you have found seem to be correct.
Here is a link to the Stockholm household records:
http://digitalastadsarkivet.stockholm.se/Rotemannen2012/Search.aspx
There is an English button. If you write in her birthdate 18660924 and her name as "Svens" "Emma" you will get 4 hits with 2 different spellings for her surname. You can view a couple of the original records to the left and you will see when she left for USA on the right and her movements in Stockholm.
This page can be a bit unpredictable sometimes, so be patient.
Ian
-
This looks like her emigration record from Gothenburg to Hull. The ship was called "Romeo":
-
Also, there is some writing on some records that I think is important but cannot read.
Both birth records and the text all state that Sven Gustaf Peterson is the father.
Ian
-
Ian:
Awesome! Thank you for confirming this information and also providing me with new information.
I did have the ship as the Romeo but I wasn't sure I had the right Emma. Since you also found the same information and came to the same conclusion, I know we have the correct person.
I will take a look at all of the information in detail and also the links to her movements in Stockholm. It was surprising to me that she went there because I can't find any other relative who did.
Thanks again!
Paul
-
The link you sent to the Stockholm records is great! It worked just like you said.
Can I find this ledger from Hedvig Eleonora online? I wanted to see some pages but cannot figure out how to locate it. This was from 1889, the year Emma left for America.

Hi
Noticed that one of the records from Stockholm stated that she worked at Humlegården:

Ian

Great! I remember finding one of her records a couple months ago and I could not read the word of where she lived or worked. Now I know thanks to you! I was guessing it was some kind of park but again without being able to decipher the word, I wasn't sure.
Thanks so much for all of your help. You have saved me a ton of time and also helped me with the accuracy of my research.
I have one more line of Swedish relatives that I may ask you about. I have found some of their records. I will send you some links soon and see if you can help me fill in the gaps.

No worries and cheers. Just post them and I'll see what I can do.

Hi Ian:
Here is a birth record for Peter Nilsson, 9 Oct 1792 in Rappestad. His father's last name....Jaksson? Can you read it? I believe the mother is Maja Persdotter.

Noticed that one of the records from Stockholm stated that she worked at Humlegården:
I am sorry but I was incorrect here. She lived at Humlegården 31. It says she was "piga" - housemaid. She probably worked for a wealthy family near by.

Hi Ian:
Can you read this? It should be the reason for a death.
Thanks,
Paul
-
I read it as "empirem pleurderiti".
I think it is some kind of pleuritis (Pleurisy).
It is in Latin.
Have you the link to the page please.
Ian
-
Ok. Thanks.
The link that I found on this death record had nothing written as the cause. But then I found the death record on the ancestry.com website which was a different index. That was the image that I sent.
Gustaf Robert Lindskog died 25 Aug 1905 Törnevalla. He also used Nilsson with Lindskog as his last name.
Here is the link. I believe it just says where he died but not from what.

Hi Ian:
Here is the record of my great grandfather Carl (Karl) Severus Magnusson (number 55) leaving Norra Åsarp for North America on 23 Jun 1887.
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v56057.b60&page=main/index
He was born on 5 Sep 1868 in Norra Åsarp to Magnus Josefsson and Kristina Andersdotter (both born 1840).
Carl went by the name Carl S. Bjorklund (not Magnusson) in the United States.
I have been trying for a while to connect his trip from Sweden to the US without much luck. Since it was 1887, he probably arrived in New York at Castle Garden, not Ellis Island. I have checked both websites but not found anything that I believe is correct.
I found a ship manifest of the Orlando leaving Gothenburg on 24 Jun 1887 to Hull. I will attach a picture. It says Carl Bjorklund was 20 (he would have actually been 18 years old....19 in a couple months, so I'm not sure if this is the correct record or not). It also says he was going to Grand Rapids, Michigan which might be correct. He eventually settled in Connecticut. And it mentions Jonkopping, so not sure about that either.
He would have then sailed from Liverpool to New York, but I have had a hard time finding a passenger list that matches his name at around the right date.
Let me know if you think I'm on the right track, and if you have any suggestions. He went back to Sweden in 1909 and brought his father and sister back to the US. I have those records as they were easy to find (and they arrived at Ellis Island).
Thanks,
Paul
-
Hi
My, that wasn't easy.
I had to go back to basics for that one. Anyway, I thought perhaps the guy under his name on the passenger list F. Julius Carlson was a friend and perhaps travelled together. I looked him up in Jönköping and the F. Julius left as recorded but no Carl.
So looking for Fredrik Julius passenger list was easier and low and behold Carl is with him:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVSV-L4FL - Near the bottom of the page.
His record is on Ancestry too and is listed as C. Borklund on the "City of Chester" arriving 9 July 1887.
I checked for any other Björklunds born at that time in Jönköping and there weren't any. So I am pretty sure this is your Carl. I think someone mistakenly or Carl stated that he was from Jönköping.
Ian
-
Ian:
Amazing!!! How did you do that? I must have spent 10 or 15 hours trying to piece this together, and you did it so quickly. Thanks for sharing your thought process with me as it may help me going forward.
I can't tell you how much I appreciate this. Carl went on to be a very successful home builder and contractor in Bridgeport Connecticut. Sadly, he died of liver cancer at the age of only 47. I went to see the houses he built a couple weeks ago. I had not been in Connecticut since the early 1970s, so it was long overdue.
Do you have a PayPal account? I would love to give you something as appreciation for all the work you have done for me. Let me know.
I have some more records I will need your help with, but we are getting near the end. I'm putting books together for my relatives about these ancestors, and they are so excited.
Again, thank you so much for all your incredible work.
Paul
-
Thanks for your kind gesture Paul. Cheers. But no Thank You. I do this for fun and to help others like yourself.
Just keep sending stuff. No problems.
For your interest here are 2 records for this Fredrik Julius. They may have been good friends:
Jönköpings Sofia AI:25 (1881-1889) Bild 354 / sid 351 (AID: v23208.b354.s351, NAD: SE/VALA/00171)
Jönköpings Sofia BI:2 (1877-1891) Bild 247 (AID: v34687.b247, NAD: SE/VALA/00171) - nr 187
btw - Fredrik was also a builder, a bricklayer actually.
Ian
-
Interesting!
I used to think the Swedish church books were cumbersome and hard to navigate. But now I realize they are very detailed and organized and provide a lot of information if you know how to put it all together. We are lucky these books have been preserved over the years and that websites offer access to them. And that there are people like you who help those who are less knowledgeable.
I just found the City of Chester reference for Carl on ancestry. He was listed as C. Borklund. I had always been searching with the "j". But when I just looked at the record, it's not there, I'm sure it was just an error by whoever wrote it down. But that little error has caused me hours of frustration!
Thanks again for everything.

Ian: Here is a newspaper account of Carl Bjorklund and Emma Swensson's wedding in Bridgeport, CT in 1895. Can you translate it for me?
-
Here we go. I am not a journalist so the wording might be a little off but it is close:
"A pleasant Swedish wedding celebrated this last Saturday afternoon when Mr. Carl Björklund and Miss Emma Svensson were united through matrinomy. The wedding was held at the Swedish Baptist Church and was performed by Pastor Wilhelm Johansson. Miss Emma Björklund, the groom's sister, E. Eliason, Olivia Sanford from Naugatuck, Ct., and Olivia Vergin acted as the bridesmaids. The marshalls were Mr. Otto Magnuson, Carl Carlson, Sanfrid Björklund and Edward Björklund. After the marriage the reception was held at the home C.A.Björklunds at 65 Wood Ave. The presents the young pair received were many and expensive."
Ian
-
Perfect! Thank you!
-
Cheers Paul.
.......just a thought, I only live about 30 mins from Norra Åsarp.
Ian
-
Wow! Anything you can find out about Carl...if it's not too far out of your way? Are there any books with information there that are not available online?
I have been to Sweden once, back in the 1980s. I'm definitely going to plan a trip in the next couple of years and visit the places where my ancestors lived.
You had mentioned you moved part of our chat to the Europe thread a couple weeks ago. I was trying to find out about life on these farms back in the 1800s. Can you tell me which thread that was? Or is there a good one you can recommend where you think I could ask this question? I'm sure it's been asked many times before, so the answers are probably already out there. I've checked some websites and they have helped. But I find websites like this one extremely helpful because there are so many knowledgeable people. Let me know.
Thanks,
Paul
-
Hi
I'll take a look and see what I can find.
Your thread wasn't moved to Europe. It was this thread that was started.
Ian
-
Ok. Got it.
Here is a small newspaper article that mentions Carl. Dewey Street was where he built 3 houses...each 3 stories...for his family members. Can you translate the article?
Thanks,
Paul
-
Hi
A dinner party hosted by Mr Karl Björklund, one of Bridgeport's successful Swedish constructors at his home in Dewey Street last Saturday evening. Around 20 of Mr Björklund's family and friends were invited. The guests then consumed a splendid dinner as Pastor Hammerberg was given the honour by the hosts to hold a speech which was very appropriate and humorous especially on Mr. Björklund's 45th birthday. The whole gathering gave their best wishes. The evening continued with song and conversation. The grateful atmosphere was prevailing.
Ian
-
Awesome! Thanks! My mother is going to love this. She grew up in one of those houses on Dewey Street.
Paul
-
Hi Ian:
I don't need this whole article translated...but it mentions Emma. I see dollar amounts and I think it has to do with a church. Can you give me a general sense of what it is about? Thanks, Paul
-
Hi
It is about a Women's Association in the church of Quinsigamond called Tabita. It has 56 female members. It states that the income was $401.70 and expenditures were $351.12 with a profit of $50.58. Emma was re-elected as treasurer.
Ian
-
Got it! Thanks!

Hi Ian:
Here is the birth record of my 2nd great grandmother Christina (and her twin Johanna), born out of wedlock to Anna Sara Magnusdotter, on 4 may 1840 in Ullasjö:
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v5682.b51.s99&page=main/index
Her mother married Anders Josef Johansson some years later, but I don't believe he was the father of the twin girls.
Can you tell me anything from the birth record? Where they were born? Also, any clue to who their father was?
Thanks,
Paul
-
Hi
There is no info on the father unforunately, just the witnesses.
Ian
-
That's what I thought, but wanted to run it by you in case there was some other way to find out. Thanks for taking a look at it for me.
Paul
-
Ian:
Here is a link for a bio of Josef Johansson Björn who is my 3rd great grandfather:
https://www.geni.com/people/Joseph-Björn/6000000039942057945
It looks like he was a soldier and possibly a doctor (homeopathic).
I have his birth record (13 Feb 1812) and death record (16 Feb 1899) in Ambjörnarp. I have been able to follow him from 1828 on in the household books, but I cannot find him pre-1828.

I believe his parents were Johannes Magnusson and Kjerstin Pehrsdotter. He might have been born at Stjärnebo farm.
Can you take a look? I would like to find where he lived between birth and 1828. And I would like to know if I can find out more about his being a soldier and his interest in medicine. Also, any clue to where his parents were pre-1828 (maybe living with him?) would be great.
Thanks, Paul

This came from the geni website. What do you think?

Hi
Here is the family:

Hi
Here is a file I obtained from the Soldier Association on Josef:
-
Amazing! Thanks!

There wasn't much info there unfortunately. Sometimes there is, sometimes there isn't.
Ian

I understand. But it still great to have the document for me to include when I put my book together.
Paul
-
I took a look at the abortion page - interesting and a nice piece of history. It wasn't on ArkivDigital, unfortunately.
I found this - there is a book on Stjärnebo by Lars Josefsson. You might think it interesting:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01kg4/
I used Google Translate. I hope it works.
Ian

Thanks for passing this along!
-
The translation was pretty good. I can understand most of what he was saying. It is sad that no one is there anymore.

Ian:
I found Johannes and Kjerstin in Tranemo (1803- ) before Josef's birth:
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v14782.b15.s21&page=main/index
What do the letters stand for before Johannes' names (Abs.?)
Also, does it say they left for Ambjörnarp and when?
Thanks,
Paul
-
They left for Stjernebo in 1808.
Here is a good site for the Swedish abbreviations: https://www.genealogi.se/swedish-abbreviations
Ian
-
What do the letters stand for before Johannes' names (Abs.?)
It actually says "åbo" - usually a farmer farming land owned by the state. They had the right to farm the land for as long as they wanted as long as they did their duty.
Ian
-
Got it. I thought it might be "absent".
Thanks for the tip on the abbreviation website. I will bookmark that as I'm sure it will come in very handy.

Hi Ian: One more....
Feb 1899 death record for Josef Björn
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v187856.b1670.s9&page=main/index
There is a lot of writing all the way across. Can you let me know if there is anything interesting or important? I see 926 korporal, so was this a military reference? It's hard to read the reason why he died and also the writing at the far right.
Thanks,
Paul
-
Can you read on the left side....Kjerstin's parent's names...and where they lived? Born 29 May 1768 Tranemo.
They were Pehr Hansson and Stina Olofsdotter at Berg Ödegården.
Here is the household 1795-1800: Tranemo AI:1 (1795-1819) Bild 9 / sid 7 (AID: v14781.b9.s7, NAD: SE/GLA/13570)
But don't forget that this book goes up to 1819 so keep turning the pages. There are 5 books in that book alone. You will also find Johannes Magnusson at Berg Ödegården too.
Ian

I thought it might be "absent".
You will see "abs." a lot in the books. It means absolved of all their sins.

Hi
I thought it be easier to translate rather than explain:
"Josef Björn, förra detta korporal nr.926 vid Kinds Härad - från By Östra (Gräsåsen)

If you are interested there are many books containing "Inventory of Estates" of the deceased. They contain a lot of info about the family etc. I have tried to locate some for you without success. Sometimes there are registers which makes searching a little easier otherwise it is quite time consuming.
I recommend you looking them up.
Here is one example for Stina Olofsdotter and Per Hansson from Berg Ödegården:
The index: Kinds häradsrätt BouReg:1 (1736-1840) Bild 105 / sid 102 (AID: v186384.b105.s102, NAD: SE/GLA/11160)
The actual record: Kinds häradsrätt FIIa:24 (1814-1815) Bild 243 / sid 479 (AID: v142766.b243.s479, NAD: SE/GLA/11160)
Johannes Magnusson and Kerstin are stated in the record.

Hi Ian:
Thanks for all of this incredible information! Ironically, yesterday I watched a video on how to research more from arkivdigital including estate inventories. I think I will have to watch it again because it's more complex than I have imagined.
Thanks for all the tips and for going the extra mile with these records! I really appreciate it.
I will probably have a couple more today. Then I am out of town for three days so it will be quiet. Also, next week I am out of town for four days for a business meeting. So you may be getting a little break here!
Paul
-
Cheers Paul
Good timing as the cricket starts tomorrow: England v South Africa. Haha!
Ian
-
Nice!
I found the estate inventory for Stina Olofsdotter. A few questions....so the first part (paragraph) states 25 oct 1814...which is the date they did the probate/inventory? Or the date she died? I see the next several pages list the items in the inventory. And I see in the first part where Jonannes and Kerstin are mentioned. Could you translate just the first paragraph for me? I'll include a snapshot so you don't have to find it again.
Thanks,
Paul
-
Hi Ian:
I'm off again tomorrow for 4 days....but was hoping you could translate this marriage record from 1867. There is writing with the names and also on the right. Magnus Josefsson and Christina Andersdotter. I'm not sure if it says where they were married...Kölaby?
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v56043.b47&page=main/index
Thanks as always for your help.
Paul

One more.....Can you read the word before Magnus? Brokare? Maybe his occupation?

Magnus Josefsson and Christina Andersdotter. I'm not sure if it says where they were married...Kölaby?
Hi
It says:
"Drängen Magnus Josefsson från Rutagården i Åsarp och Pigan Christina Andersdotter från Stommen i Kölaby"
Magnus was born in Ambjörnarp 24 June 1840. Parents: Josef Andersson and Stina ?dotter
Christina in Ullasjö 4 May 1840. Parents: Anders
Ian
-
One more.....Can you read the word before Magnus? Brokare? Maybe his occupation?
It is "brukare" = user, employer; farmer, tenant
Brukare is listed in the link I gave you earlier.
Ian
-
Thanks, Ian. I appreciate the help as always.
I just got home from my trip. I will probably have a some more requests in the next few days.

"År 1814 den 25 October blef efter ? ? änkan gudtroliga Stina Olofsdotter i Ödegåreden Berg Lagen Bouppteckning för Rättad efter des ? tiden ? man arbetsmannen Per Hans Jonsson igenom sit äktenskap eftersig lämnat ? barn - dottern Cherstin Persdotter 47 år gammal, son Hans 42 år, sonen Olof 36 år gammal, alla myndiga och ............?"
To be honest this is very difficult to decypher.
The date is when the probate was written. It just says that Stina Olofsdotter from Ödegården was married to Per Hans Jonsson and 3 of the children were left with what was on the inventory list and is to be divided up between them.
Cherstin Persdotter 47 years old.
Hans 42 years old.
Olof 36 years old.
Ian
-
Hi Ian:
Thanks for the translation. I understand that some of these are harder to translate than others. But it at least gives me an idea of what the probate said and family members who were mentioned.
Thanks again,
Paul

Hi Paul
It's not the translation the problem but the actual decyphering.
Ian
-
OK....got it.
Thanks,
Paul

Hi Ian: I have consulted several sources but cannot figure out the cause of death for Kristina Andersdotter. I can read the rest just fine. Is it Vrästa? I've even tried the swedish dictionary (SHDD) where you can put in the beginning, middle, or end of the word, and the only answer I get is wräka which doesn't make sense.
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v183036a.b90.s3&page=main/index
Any thoughts?

could it be kräfta....cancer?

Hi
Kräfta it is.
Ian
-
Thanks! I'm getting better.
But I'm stuck on something...Carl Fredrik Norr (parents Frans Adolf Norr and Johanna Östergren). He was born 10 Jan 1861 in Landeryd. I followed him until he moved to Vist in 1879.
Here he is with his parents and brothers 1876-1879
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v25108.b203.s195&page=main/index
Here he is number 68, leaving for Vist 27 October 1879:
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v38677.b77&page=main/index
In Vist, he should be number 15...but it has his name as Anders Gustav Norr, not Karl Fredrick
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v41926.b30&page=main/index
When I go to page 111, I see Anders Gustav Norman with the wrong birth date.
I see there are 2 Vist parishes, the other in Alvsborg. No luck there.
Did I miss something? I want to find where he went before he moved to America. He was known as Charles Norman in Connecticut. He married Clara, the sister of Ida V. Andersson.
I found a Carl Norrman on a passenger list to NY on the SS Bohemia. It left from Hamburg and Havre, and arrived in New York on 2 January 1891. It says he was 29 which would be correct. I'm pretty sure that is him.
It said he left from Axberg.
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v52906.b47&page=main/index
Here he is in Axberg in 1890. It mentions Stockholm (did he go there for a while before Axberg)? His birthday here is 10 Sep 1861 which matches up perfectly to his records in the US.
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v50946.b217.s209&page=main/index
He is the last one on the page.
Any suggestions? I'm missing the middle part...from 1879 to 1890. Did I make any mistakes along the way?
Thanks, Paul
-
Hi
You have the wrong guy. Here he is in 1890:

Thanks for finding that! I know that Carl Norman was in the United States in 1890 or 1891.
I believe the Carl Norman from Axberg is the correct Carl. I will start tracing him back. I already found his birth record and parents.

Hi Ian:
I am researching Maria Kristina Nilsson...sister of Carl August Nilsson. She was born 11 Nov 1884 in Törnevalla.
I know she moved to Stockholm Johannes in 1901. Here is her moving in record 20 Nov 1901, 4th from the bottom:
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v86317.b3120.s309&page=main/index
It looks like her new address is 29 Thuleg. I went to the Stockholm search website that you told me about a couple weeks ago, and I can't find her. I tried searching a bunch of different ways.
I can't seem to find any books for 1901-1906 for Johannes/Jakob in Stockholm. I found a mention on ancestry that she might have been married (at some point) to a guy with the last name Botvidsson. I went to the Riksarkivet website and found some men with the last name Botvidsson. But those who were married were not married to a Maria Kristina.
Any suggestions? I'd like to know when and where she died.
Thanks,
Paul
-
Hi
Here are a few helpers for you. It does look as they got married but when is the question. You'll have to go through the marriage book which ends 1949:
1912 - David Emmanuel Botvidsson: Norrköpings S:t Johannes AIIa:10 (1911-1917) Bild 3180 / sid 609 (AID: v177987.b3180.s609, NAD: SE/VALA/00272)

Maria Kristina died 11 Apr 1955 at Lövdalen in Norrköpings S:t Johannes.
David Botvidsson died 9 Sept 1962 at Lövdalen in Norrköpings S:t Johannes.

To save you time here is the link to their census record from 1950:

Hi Ian:
I'm trying to figure out when Anders Josef Bjorklund (#7) left for America. I thought it was in 1881 or 1882, but I when I go to the moving record book, I can't find it. Can you give it a try?
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v5672.b127.s120&page=main/index
I found a record of an A J Bjorklund going to New York in September 1880, but I don't think that is correct.
Thanks,
Paul
-
Hi Paul
You have the right Anders. He left Sweden in 3 Sept 1880. You will notice the text at the top of the page - "Särskild Förteckning" = Special Notes. In other words he left without going to the minister first and not being recorded in the moving out book.
https://www.arkivdigital.net/swedish-genealogy/non-existing-persons-book

A ha!! Thanks for catching that. I was going crazy trying to find him in the moving out book.
Thanks as always. I am finding most records on my own now. But I still get stuck every once in a while.

Hi Ian:
I have a huge favor. This is an article on Carl Augustinus Björklund, the uncle to my great grandfather Carl S. Björklund. Could you translate the article for me? I'd like to include it in the book that I'm making on the Björklund family.

Here we go:
"C.A. Björklund
We have the pleasure today, for SVEAS readers to present a picture of a Swedish business man in Bridgeport Conn. through his mechanical aptitude and energy created a respected and well known name, not just in "Park Town" but also even in many other places in Connecticut, aslo in other places, has given a warm and unselfish interest to his fellow countrymen.
Carl Augustus Björklund was born 27 June 1861 in By, Ambjörnarp Parish, Västergötland, Sweden, where, during his boyhood assisted his father in managing of the farming; during this time he worked with his woodwork as a trainee when he was off, which he continued after his arrival to USA in the industry. Mr B. worked in different places in Connecticut before arriving in Bridgeport in the autumn of 1882 where he was employed by the contractor Nettleton where he was soon noticed for his skillfulness and was entrusted with the most responsible orders. In the year 1891 since B. being employed by a number of well known contractors for 3 years, he started on his own and in doing so his company flourished. Many of Bridgeports most important buildings have been built by him and for this time being he has been the town's most active contractor. Besides Bridgeport Mr B. has even erected the Swedish Luther churches in Nangatuck and Deep RIver, Conn., also many houses here and there. Entrepreneur Björklund is one of the founders of the Swedish Luther Church in Bridgeport and has been active in the Swedish-American rep. club, and at the moment is a member in the town's welfare committee, also has been involved as treasurer within the Swedish-American rep. federation in Connecticut. B. is a member of S. and B. Svea, of which he has been treasurer since the organisation started 14 years ago, also is a member of Scandia lodge, A.O.U.W. lodge Sture nr. 7. V. O. lodge Monitor nr. 38, I.O.G.T, Business Men's Association, Bridgeport Club, Corinthian Lodge nr. 104, F.& A.M.
Entrepreneur Björklund married miss Margaret Virgin on 7 Nov 1885 and their organisation has blessed their two children, daughter Julia and son Arthur. Their elegant residence 179 Wood Avenue being designed in a typical Scandinavian manner, and within, the Scandinavian hospitality is prevailing.
Many of the gallant deeds B. has carried out have been discrete and today many countrymen appreciate the many self sacrificial willingness and unselfishness interests he has given."

Ian:
Phenomenal work!! Thanks so much for this. I have found much more info on this Carl. He retired by 57 and went back to Sweden with his wife to take care of some affairs. Unfortunately, they both died within a year of each other at age 60 and 61.
Thanks again for this. I know it was a long article. I have one more request that I will send today. Then things should be quiet for a few days.

Hi Ian:
Can you tell me where Britta Stina went in 1853 or 1854? She was born 20 Aug 1837 in Ambjornarp (although I think some later references state Tranemo...which is the same place?).
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v14984.b63.s58&page=main/index
There is some writing way over on the right that starts with an "E" and possibly the year 1854. I don't see her at Pjuken in the next household record book. I checked the moving out books for 1853 and 1854 but couldn't find her. I tried finding a farm starting with an "E" in her parish but still couldn't find her.
Here is her birth record:
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v14968.b105.s102&page=main/index
Any thoughts? I want to know if she got married, and also if she went to America like several of her brothers.
Thanks,
Paul
-
Hi
It says Ämteshult. It is a farm. A rough explanation: "ä" is sort of pronounced as an "e" in Swedish as in "eh" in English.
Ambjörnarp AI:11 (1850-1855) Bild 16 / sid 11 (AID: v14984.b16.s11, NAD: SE/GLA/13008)
She is the last name on the page.
Ian
-
So easy...now that you showed me! Thanks for finding that. And thanks for the explanation.
So from that record, it looks like she went to Hölte (farm?) in 1855, right? I tried in 1855 and in the next book 1856, but I don't see her at Hölte or Ämteshult.
Do you think it is possible that she went by Britta Kristina (in other words...are Stina and Kristina and even Chrstina interchangeable? I (and others) have found a Brita or Britta Kristina Josefsdotter living with who would be her sister Josefa Josefsdotter Bergelin in 1900 in Norra Åsarp. She is listed as single, a piga.
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v183029b.b440.s38&page=main/index
https://sok.riksarkivet.se/folkrakningar?Fornamn=Britta&Efternamn=Josefsdotter&DatumFran=1837&DatumTill=1837&Folk1860=false&Folk1870=true&Folk1880=true&Folk1890=true&Folk1900=true&Folk1910=true&Folk1930=true&AvanceradSok=False&page=3&postid=Folk_113108343&tab=post#tab
Then a death record for her can be found with another slight error....birth date 20 May not 20 August 1837
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v56051.b43&page=main/index
She is the last child of Josef Björn that I am researching. I'm done with all the others.
Thanks again for your help. Let me know if you think I'm on the right track.
Paul

Hi Paul
It actually says Slöta.
Try this: Slöta AI:11 (1880-1894) Bild 282 / sid 274 (AID: v28484.b282.s274, NAD: SE/GLA/13491)
Even though the birth month is 5 instead of an 8 I believe it to be the same. She went to Domkyrkoförsamling Göteborg.
Here is her moving out record from 1891 nr 48: Slöta BI:5 (1890-1907) Bild 8 (AID: v83197a.b8, NAD: SE/GLA/13491)

Perfect! Thanks again for your help. I see it now.
I can now wrap up my research on all 11 children!

Ian: This is amazing! I really appreciate this!
I know see where Margareta was born which is very helpful.
I found detailed documentation a both of Carl and Margareta's deaths in Sweden. It comes from a book of American citizen deaths abroad.
Would you be able to find any kind of obituary for either Carl or Margareta in Sweden? I could not find it in any newspaper in the United States using a couple websites that I belong to. Their children Julia and Arthur ended up having some issues after their parents died. It seems that Arthur collected some of the rent payments on their properties but never told his sister (who was the executrix of the will.) Julia brought suit against him for this.
I see that Julia went to Sweden with her parents when she was a very small girl for a visit. But she and her brother lived most of their lives in Connecticut. She married a chemist with the last name Borg. Her brother Arthur never married but became involved in politics before his death in 1956.
This is truly awesome information. Thanks again for all your help.

Is this Västra Sallerup in the image I attached?
I'm tracking Margareta and her family (father Per Larsson (1823 15/1) and mother Kersti Larsdotter and siblings). They left Börringe (Gustav) on 16 Aug 1870.
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v108775.b50&page=main/index
I went to the moving in book for 1870 (and 1871) for V. Sallerup, but I don't see them. Did I misread this parish or date?
Thanks,
Paul
-
Hi Paul
Everything you have found seems to be correct, also the correct parish, but their moving in record is missing or they changed their minds and went elsewhere, anyway.....
........not easy this one. I had to start backwards. Here is Per Larsson's last entry before his death in 1912:
Västra Sallerup (Eslöv) AIIa:14 (1908-1917) Bild 240 / sid 14 (AID: v266965.b240.s14, NAD: SE/LLA/13478)
I think you should be able to trace them from here. You will notice his wife's death date recorded too. Her death entry should give you a page in the household book.
I do know they lived in Eslöfs Köping in 1890 in Västra Sallerup/Eslöv.

Here is Kjersti's 1904 death record. I see page 10 mentioned. I looked in all 3 household books but I don't see it. I'm not that good in the years when there are more than one book. And they seem to be villages or cities with house numbers. I am in the right spot?

I found Margaret's record of moving to America!!

Great stuff Paul
Do you still need help with your earlier questions today?
Ian
-
Hi Ian:
I think I am good on this family! However, if you can come across a newspaper obituary in Sweden for Carl and or Margareta, that would be great. Only if it's not too much work.
Thanks again,
Paul
-
I can't promise anything as I do not search for such info usually. But I'll see what I can dig up.
Ian
-
Ian:
I just found this from 1922! Unfortunately, I cannot access issues in May 1923 when Carl (Charles) Bjorklund died.
If you can do a quick internet search in Sweden for him, that's great. I don't know if you have access to old Swedish newspapers and if they are searchable. But if nothing comes up quickly, no problem. We can move on. Thanks again, Paul

Ian:
I am researching Karolina Josefsdotter seen here in 1871-1880 in Mossebo:
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v14997.b45.s39&page=main/index
She is line 16, born 3 Aug 1858 in Norra Hestra.
It says she went to America in 1880 which I believe is correct from my research of her in the US. I am having trouble finding her moving out record. Can you find it?
I have a possible record of her sailing from Gothenburg to Hull on 26 March 1880 (see attached). Do you agree? I searched records from Liverpool to New York in April or May 1880 with one possibility in late April (the 27th), but it could be wrong.
Thanks,
Paul
-
Hi Paul
You have the right record for her from the previous post.
Here is her moving out record - nr 7:
Tranemo B:2 (1861-1894) Bild 116 / sid 292 (AID: v14718.b116.s292, NAD: SE/GLA/13570)
Here is her date leaving Gothenburg:
-
Thank you! That helps a lot. Her last name is a little odd because it was based off of her father's middle name.
Paul

Ian:
Can you tell me about Olga Kristina...#21? Is her mother Anna Sofia Andersson (to the right)? Was she adopted by Anders Fredrik and Maria Josefina? I can't make out the writing across the page.
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v179417.b94.s82&page=main/index
Thanks,

Hi Paul
To your questions: yes to all.
The writing says: "mod.(modern) piga Anna Sofia Andersson"
Ian
-
Ok! Thanks for confirming that.

Hi Ian:
Quick question: Were Maja Lisa's parents Eric Parsson and Stina Jonsdotter...and if so were they married at the time?
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v38706.b38.s105&page=main/index
Thanks, Paul
-
Eric Pärsson and Stina Jönsdotter were her parents and yes they were married. Eric at this time was "undantagsman" = "person receiving support after giving his estate to another".
Their marriage 12 Dec 1789: Ledberg EI:1 (1746-1818) Bild 144 / sid 321 (AID: v38710.b144.s321, NAD: SE/VALA/00214)

Perfect as always! Thanks!
Paul

Hi Ian:
I am researching Eric Pärsson (born 10 Sep 1765) and his wife Stina Jönsdotter (born 28 Aug 1768 in Ledberg). I found Eric's death date of 9 Apr 1827 in Ledberg. Stina then became a widow. Can you locate her death date? I have gone page by page in the death book and can't find it. If she moved, I didn't catch that.
Here is the household record from the 1820s:
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v25115.b316.s618&page=main/index
Thanks for your help.

Hi
In these types of cases when you can't find someone there is a possibility that she perhaps moved out. (as you perhaps thought). It does happen that the minister forgot to record her. In this case the minister did so:
Here is her moving out record - nr 5: Ledberg CI:4 (1800-1860) Bild 132 / sid 473 (AID: v38706.b132.s473, NAD: SE/VALA/00214)
Here is her moving in record - May 1831: Kärna BI:1 (1812-1860) Bild 40 / sid 73 (AID: v38612.b40.s73, NAD: SE/VALA/00208)
and

Eric at this time was "undantagsman" = "person receiving support after giving his estate to another".
Hi Paul
I'm sorry but I have misled you somewhat. I thought the word before his name was "undantagsman" but actually is "nämndemannen", which means he was a lay-judge.
Ian
-
Eric Pehrsson from Södra Lårebo is in the court records as seen halfway down this page for example:

Awesome info!! Thanks so much!! I really appreciate it.
For the household record in Kärna...can you resend the link? It was the same as her moving in record. I tried to decipher the farm and poked around in the 1834-1839 household record but could not find her and her son Jonas.
Thanks again,
Paul
-
I think I found it. Page 96 in the 1828-1834 household book.
-
But no luck in the following household record book (1834-1839). Did she die? Or can you find it?
-
Sorry about that. I didn't see my mistake. I am at work this evening so I can't help you but if you have found the right page just continue to the next book and hopefully you will be able to continue from there.
Ian
-
I found it!! And I found her death record 14 March 1850:
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v38618.b18.s29&page=main/index
-
Hi Ian:
And now I'm stuck on someone else....Anna Lena Andersdotter born 26 July 1797.
Here she is in Kaga (1822-1830) with her 2 daughters Johanna and Stina Maja:
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v26172.b108.s97&page=main/index
I believe the farm is called Smedstugan.
The next household record book jumps from 1830 to 1855. Is there any way to find out about her? I mainly want to find her death date.
Thanks,
Paul
-
Hi Paul
This should get you going again. You'll see quite a large family there:
Östra Harg AI:8 (1831-1835) Bild 130 / sid 118 (AID: v26574.b130.s118, NAD: SE/VALA/00485)
Also, if you are interested:
Johanna Andersdotter's marriage 1840 nr5:
Östra Harg C:5 (1822-1860) Bild 13 / sid 19 (AID: v42702.b13.s19, NAD: SE/VALA/00485)
Johanna's household 1885:
Östra Harg AI:17 (1881-1885) Bild 207 / sid 194 (AID: v26584.b207.s194, NAD: SE/VALA/00485)
I found Anna Lena Andersdotter through her daughter's moving records.
Ian
-
Wow! This is amazing. Thank you for taking the time to trace their movements from different angles. I am directly related to the other daughter, but I am still interested in building out the family tree. Both daughters were born illegitimately but I don't think there's anyway we can find who the father was.
Thanks again,
Paul
-
Hi
You're welcome.
The link you sent in reply #159 states that the father is unknown.
"fadr: okänd"
Ian
-
Got it!
Here is the moving out record from Östra Harg to Rystad in 1837 (November 26, I think):
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v42697.b11.s15&page=main/index
Anna Lena (now a widow) and 4 kids moved, but when I go to the moving in book for Rystad, it seems to stop at October 1837 before jumping to 1838 where I don't see them. I was able to see that she had married in 1823 and had more children with her husband Anders. He died in 1837.
Any thoughts?
Paul
-
I found her!
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v28798.b78.s144&page=main/index
She is the top entry on the page. I also found her in the book before. Can you tell me what the writing says off to the right?
Thanks,
Paul
-
And did she have another illegitimate child in 1841? Wilhelmina?
-
Hi
The text just explains that Anna Lena is now poor and that she will not burden the parish.
And yes Wilhelmina is her illegitimate child.
Ian
-
Thanks for confirming this.
I searched page by page and was able to find her household record and her death record.
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v40017.b128.s247&page=main/index
Looks like she died of pneumonia or something similar to lung inflammation.
Paul
-
She died of tuberculosis.
Ian
-
I see. Thanks for letting me know. I will fix it now.
Paul
-
Hi ian:
Does this mean "died of old age"? It was listed as the reason of death.
Thanks,
Paul
-
Hi Paul
Yes it does.
Ian
-
Great! Thank you

Hi Ian:
Who is Karl Oskar Gunnar Karlsson in relation to Johan Frederik Hjalmar Karlsson? Both of Karl's parents died young in 1918. This screenshot is from 1930. Could Karl be a nephew?
Thanks, Paul

Hi Paul
Just by looking at the image and not digging it looks as though the "fs" before his name is for "fosterson" .... adopted son, that is.
You could look up the birth in Risinge. He could be family as you suggested.
Ian
-
Here is more info that might help:
Just realised that this was connected. As I thought (and you), he looks to be family:
"fader avliden, järnvägs arbetare Knut Oskar Karlsson. Moder hans hustru Matilda Cecilia född Nilsson också avliden."
"father deceased, railway worker Knut Oskar Karlsson. Mother his wife Matilda Cecilia nee Nilsson also deceased."

Thanks for your help. I checked fs on a couple websites but could not find what that abbreviation meant. Also thanks for the extra information.

Hi Ian:
Please find Ida Maria born 1 Sep 1876 in Norra Asarp, #5 on the page
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v183029b.b2020.s191&page=main/index
I see on the right she moved somewhere in 1897. I tried to find page 341 in two different books, but I don't see her. Can you track her movements until she left Sweden? If I have the correct Ida Maria, she would have moved to the US between 1897 and 1901 (I think).
Thanks, Paul
-
Hi Paul.
Although it looks like a "3" it is actually a "2". She is married and has children.......
Norra Åsarp AIIa:1 (1892-1913) Bild 2520 / sid 241 (AID: v183029b.b2520.s241, NAD: SE/GLA/13403)
Ian
-
Hi Ian:
Thanks for catching that! Now I see page 241 and that she got married.
So I know now she is the wrong Ida Maria Andersson. I will keep looking. Thanks for your help.
Paul
-
Who is the Ida Maria you are looking for?
Ian
-
She married Sanfrid Bjorklund in Bridgeport, Connecticut in November 1908. From US Census records, it says she arrived in the US between 1895 and 1902 (different dates are given). When she married, her name was Ida Maria Anderson.
I received church records from a Swedish church in Connecticut from the early 1900s. It says she was born 21 Dec 1875 (or 1878...it's hard to read the last number) in Åsarp, (Elfsborg?). But that's the same place where her husband was born in 1873 (which is correct), so I'm wondering if they put the same parish for her by mistake.
All other records of her in the US state she was born in 1875 or 1876. I just ordered her 1943 death certificate from Connecticut to see if it offers any clues.
I was hoping to find her birth record, moving out of Sweden record, etc. I searched Norra Åsarp for a birth record but could not find it. I have her husband's info 100% correct, and her children, just not her.
Let me know if you have any ideas.
Thanks,
Paul
-
Ian:
I found more info on Ida Maria (Andersson). Her birthday was 21 Dec 1875. The location Borsti.....fors? It's hard to read. Then it says Skaraborgs Län. I checked a few parishes that are close (Börstig) but no luck finding her birth record. Can you take a look when you have some time?
Thanks,
Paul
-
And it says she arrived in America in 1902

This should get you going:

That's her! Thanks for finding it for me. Now I know I'm researching the correct Ida.

Cheers Paul.

She travelled as an Isaksson:
-
Thank you, ian! I had been able to follow her to Borås, and then I think she moved to Toarp in 1895.
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v88538a.b160.s12&page=main/index
But I could not her after that. I did however see the Isaksdotter last name...at least for a while.
Thanks again for finding a 1902 record of her moving to America. It all matches up!
Paul
-
Hi
That was a wee bit fiddly.
Here she is with what looks like to be her sister as a factory worker:

Hi
I noticed that those books only went up to 1894.
Ian
-
Me too.
Thanks for the extra help. I found her with her sister Frida (and Frida's daughter Edit Gertrud) in the 1900 Swedish census. I think it said she was a seamstress which would make sense with working in a factory.
Paul
-
Excellent.
Ian
-
......1900 Swedish census.
Hi
Is this census on Ancestry or elsewhere?
Also, Borås was the centrum for textiles in Sweden around that time.
Ian
-
I got that information from the
Riksarkivet.se website.
I'm not sure if it's technically called a census or not.
Thanks for the extra information on Borås. I appreciate it.
Paul
PS: looks like we will escape the worst of hurricane Irma. We were expecting a direct hit tomorrow, but now the track has shifted to the west.
-
Ok cheers.
I bet you are relieved to be missing out on that.
Ian
-
Yes, but we could still lose power for days. During one hurricane, we had no electricity for 8 days, and parts of Fort Lauderdale for 21 days. I have hotel reservations just in case this happens.

Hi Ian:
Can you tell me what marriage entry #57 says on the right? For Tobias Öberg and Hulda Josefsson.
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v82105.b60.s52&page=main/index
Also if you can give me a head start where they lived. I know they came to the US around 1910.
Thanks,

I think I found them!

Ian:
Here is a moving out record from Ljungarum:
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v35311.b88&page=main/index
#51 is Carl August Svensson, his wife, and 7 children. Can you see where they go next? I'm trying to find when Tobias (their son born 11 Jul 1881 in Rogberga) acquired the Öberg last name. I'm guessing in the military? Tobias married Hulda Elisabet Josefsson in 1905 in Sweden (the record you helped me with). They moved to Connecticut in 1910. I have that record. I'm just not sure where the Öberg name came from. They used Oberg as their last name in the US, and I have found some living Obergs still in the US who are descendants of Tobias.
-
They are moving to "Jönköping Östra Församlingen".
Ian
-
I'm just not sure where the Öberg name came from.
He was in the artillery: 2nd Artillery Regiment Jönköping:

He was probably given the name (or took) by the army:

Hi Ian:
I have another favor. I hope there's not too much to ask. I found another article that I would love to have translated. I will send it in three pieces. Let me know. Thanks, Paul

Part 1

Part 2

Part 2

Part 3
-
No worries Paul. I'll get back to you in a few days.
Ian
-
Thanks, Ian. No rush. I appreciate it.
We lost electricity on Sunday afternoon. The hotel I planned to go to if we lost power also has no electricity, and their entrance road is flooded. They are saying it could be a week or longer before power. I hope it won't be that long.
-
Hope all is well. The pictures seen on the news don't look fun at all.
Ian
-
It's not too bad here. Lots of trees are down. No damage to my house, so I was fortunate.
-
Hi Paul.
Here we go:
"Bridgeport's Swedish colony is going to lose one of it's most prominent men this 19 July, Charles A. Björklund and wife will be leaving our town via the steamer "Drottningholm" to Sweden and intend to settle down in scenic Ambjörnarp, Västergötland. Björklund arrived here in 1881 and stayed a little while in Portland, Conn. In 1882 he settled down in our town which he made home. His mind has though been steadfast with his homeland and has visited his homeland five times. This now will be his twelth journey over the Atlantic. Björklund took the carpenter side and it wasn't too long before he had his own business. He undertook contracts for building of houses and during this time he has erected 185 buildings, some of these were quite large endeavours, such as 5 school houses, 4 fire stations, some churches and 2 large blocks in the town's business centre. Björklund was forced to quit from the business because of poor health a few years back. This picture shows the house where the Björlund's called home. It was on Park Avenue on the corner of Worth Street. He built it himself and sold it a few weeks ago. Björklund has even been active in Societies and in his hayday had been involved in organisations as The Monitor Lodge I.O.O.F., V.O. Lodge, Svea Society. He was even involved in the organisation of the Swedish Lutherian Salem Parish and served as treasurer for 15 years. He also enjoyed the same duties in the Svea Society. Björklund has even made one of the pillars in Valhalla nr. 1.
Wife Björklund was involved in parish duties until she suffered a stroke a few years back, which left her speech impaired but now is nearly restored. She has also been infected by her husband's longing to return to Sweden and to enjoy their last days there where she saw her first light of day. Björklund invited around 40 friends to a leaving party dinner last Saturday evening. A splendid "lobster dinner" was served at Norden's Club House. It was a jovial gathering. The speeches were long and many appreciations for great friendships. Mr Murberg recited one of his own poems about Björklund, but forbid it to be published. The Björklund's leave 2 children, a daughter who now is wife Borg and living in Stamford, also son Arther who together with Mautitz Swanson owns East End Coal Company. We unite us with the Björklund's many friends and wish him and his wife a pleasant journey."
Ian
-
Ian: Awesome work! Thank you so much for taking the time to translate that article into English for me. I'm going to include it in the book that I am putting together for my Björklund family.
Thanks again for all your help over the last few months. I still have a little more research to do, but I'm getting near the end. I'll send you another reply when I get stuck or need a little help.
Paul
-
You're very welcome and cheers ........and just post away.
Ian

Hi Ian:
I just came across another article. Can you translate it? No rush at all, so whenever you have time is great. I'll post a link and a picture. Hopefully it is clear enough for you to see.

Hi Paul
I have to admit that this was pretty difficult. The article was written in a way that I had problems finding the right words to make it legible. Anway, here it is. I hope it is ok.
"Well known Swedish entrepreneur in the east
Within the buidling industry there are, as known, Swedes as uppermost amoung all nationals in Chicago. But it isn't only in this town beside Michigan Lake that landsmen pushed forward leading the way in this area. Even in other cities in this country there are successful Swedish contractors and this article is about our landsman Charles A. Björklund in Bridgeport, Conn.
Björklund is from Västgötland from birth and born 1861 in Ambjörnarp. He emmigrated to America as a 19 year old, first worked in a quarry in Connecticut and then learnt carpentry in Bridgeport. While here he was then employed by H.H. Nettleton, one of the town's largest building contractors and house agents and soon advanced to foreman and continued there for 9 years. He became a building contractor himself 25 years ago and in doing so made a name for himself as competant with a great probity and therefore was very successful.
During his 25 year business as a building contractor and entrepreneur has Björklund erected over 200 residences in Bridgeport, 8 school buildings, 3 fire stations, 5 churches and many other larger business buildings. He has also built for the government, building military barracks, also other large buildings on Long Island, New York. By the end of last year he ceased his building business and retired to persue a peaceful retirement.
Although Björklund has had an enormous amount to do during his long standing successful business as an entrepreneur he has even had the time to devote his attention to church and association activities. He belongs to the Lutherian association in Bridgeport and has donated a large church bell and also a monetary donation to remember his birth parish Ambjörnarp in Sweden. He is also a member of the free masons, Oddfellow and the Vasa Order, also other associations. Björklund has been married for 25 years and has 2 children."
Ian
-
Excellent job, Ian! I really appreciate you taking the time to translate this for me. It makes perfect sense and matches up with everything else I have on Charles.
I'll let you know if I need any more help. I'm just back from a short trip to see my mother. So probably later in the week I might have a request or two.
Paul

Cheers Paul.
Ian

Hi Ian:
Just a quick question...what does the 2) and 1) mean on the left next to the first children's names? Just the order of birth?
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v8982.b202.s198&page=main/index
-
Yes it does look like the birth order.
Ian
-
Great! Thanks. That's what I guessed, but I wanted to be sure.
Paul
-
Hi Ian:
Easy one today! I just want to know for #25 death in this book from Ölme....should be Per Svensson, what are the two words to the right of his name. He was born 27 Jan 1812 and died 20 June 1897.
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v179440.b22.s15&page=main/index
Thanks, Paul

Hi Paul
The two words are "backst." and "fattighjon"
Backstugsittare: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backstuga
Fattighjon = pauper
Ian
-
Perfect! Thank you.
Here's another one, a birth record for Anna Maja, illegitimate child. I can't quite make our her mother's name. Is it Casja Johansdotter? And does it provide the father's name as Håkan Sjögren?
Thanks, Paul
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v6839.b105.s199&page=main/index
-
Yes, you are correct on both accounts.
Ian
-
Hi Ian:
Number 8 on this marriage record book....Magnus Josefsson and Christina Andersdotter...can you tell where they were married? Would it been at a church in Kölaby? They are my 2nd great grandparents, and I'm trying to find pictures of the church where they were married. I'm not sure if this is Ambjornarp or Tranemo. Any ideas?
Also, was the minister's name A. Sahlin?
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v56043.b47&page=main/index
Thanks, Paul
-
Hi Paul
In the first column on the right hand page it says Solberga. They were married there. Here is a picture of the church. And yes it is A. Sahlin.

Ian:
I hope this is an easy one. I'm trying to find the marriage date and record for Jonas (middle name Gabriel?) Andersson and Stina Greta Andersdotter. Here is the birth record for their daughter Anna Britta, born 11 Apr 1834 in Ölme:

I have them living at Råum in Ölme in 1841:

Let me know if you can crack this! I found another marriage record I needed, but this one escapes me.
Thanks, Paul

I think I found it! Number 30 on the left side:

One small request....can you tell me what it says regarding Sven Gustaf Pettersson on the far right? I know he is the father of Emma Gustava. Just want to know if there is any information that might be interesting.

Hi Ian:
Your analysis is incredibly helpful! Thanks for taking the time to be so thorough and complete.

Cheers Paul

Here are Britta and Sven Gustaf listed together before Emma was born. This means they worked at the same place or farm, correct?
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v8985.b194.s188&page=main/index
-
Yes I think you are right.
Ian

Hi Ian:
I am putting my Bjorklund (their name in the US) book together. I pretty much have all of my research done. For certain records that are very important, I might want you to translate all of the words for me. For instance, #22 birth record for Carl Severus:
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v56035.b65&page=main/index
I know he was born on 5 Sept 1868 in Norra Åsarp, Älvsborg and baptized on 7 September. I know his parents were Magnus Josefsson and Christina Andersdotter (she was 28 years old).
Can you tell me what it says in the 2nd column, to the right of Carl Severus? Also, on the far right, I believe the godparents are listed with possibly some other info. Can you let me know what it says?
Carl is my great grandfather (my mother's father's father).
Thanks, Paul
-
Hi Paul
Pretty difficult to decypher.
Torparebarn från ?solnarp.
Skolläraren Herr A. Criesberg
och Britta Stina Svensd
Herr Wensels i Kölabyg
och Amanda Sofia Johsd
"Croftowner child from ?solnarp
School teacher Mr. A. Criesberg
and Britta Stina Svensdotter
Mr. Wensels at Kölaby Farm
and Amanda Sofia Johansdotter"
They were living in Prestegården at the time so not too sure where ?solnarp is or what it says either.

Thanks, Ian. That helps. I realize some of the writing is not very clear. But still it gives me more to include in my book.

Hi Ian:
Here is a marriage record from January 1788 in Tranemo for Johannes Magnusson and Kjerstin Persdr:
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v14962.b24.s19&page=main/index
Can you tell me what Johannes did for his occupation? I assume farmer. Also, can you make out where they lived? The household examination books don't start until 1795 for Tranemo.
I believe I found them in 1803:
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v14782.b15.s21&page=main/index
Can you tell me any info? Something about Sternebo?
Thanks, Paul
-
Hi
According to the marriage record Johannes was a farmhand (Dräng). He is recorded as coming from Hjerpesbo (Järpesbo) and Kierstin was from Ödegården.
According to the Household record from 1803 he is an "Åbo"...... a person who works the land for a nobleman or clergyman.
The Household record from 1803 states that the family left for Stjernebo in 1808.
This could be Johannes Magnusson's birth at Hjerpesbo: Tranemo C:6 (1765-1786) Bild 8 / sid 4
Hope this helps.
Ian
-
Hi Ian:
Yes it does!! Thanks for your help and the extra information.
I have one more....a wedding record of Magnus Josefsson and Christina Andersdotter in November 1867 (#8 record on the left):
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v56043.b47&page=main/index
I believe we talked about this one a few months ago, but I want to be sure as I am up to this part in writing my book. Were they married at Solberga church, or were just the banns listed there? I need to know for sure if they were married there or in Kölaby, and in what parish church the ceremony took place.
Thanks again for all your help. I'm almost done with my book....hoping to finish it by Christmas.
Paul
-
Hi
The 3 week bann started in Solberga 4 Oct 1867 and the marriage was in Kölaby 22 Nov 1867.
Ian
-
Excellent! Thank you.
Back to Johannes Magnusson born 1765...I had found the same birth record you mentioned:
"This could be Johannes Magnusson's birth at Hjerpesbo: Tranemo C:6 (1765-1786) Bild 8 / sid 4"
I have on my tree that he was born 8 Aug 1765 and baptized 11 Aug 1765. Can you tell his parents' names? I had Magnus Andersson and Brita Andersdotter, but now looking at the birth record, I'm not sure. It is very hard for me to read. I see "Johannes Månsson" on the right side, and possibly Magnus and Brita on the left side. Can you clarify this for me?
Thanks,
Paul
-
Hi
The exact text:
Aug 8
M. Magnus Andersson och h. Britta Andersdotters lilla son i Jerpisbo.
Ian
-
Looking on the right hand side, it does say Johannes Månsson in Jerpisbo so this does seem to be Johannes Magnusson, but the surname Månsson is a bit misleading. It could be a mistake.
Ian
-
I have on my tree that he was born 8 Aug 1765 and baptized 11 Aug 1765.
You may already have this but his birth is recorded as 5 Aug 1765 here:
Ambjörnarp AI:1 (1793-1819) Bild 75 / sid 5
Ian
-
Again you may have this:
Kerstin Persdotter's birth and baptism:
Tranemo C:6 (1765-1786) Bild 28 / sid 24
Ian
-
Hi Ian:
Thanks for helping me with this. I had Kjerstin's correct birth record. I had also seen different variations in the books for Johannes' last name as Magnusson, Månsson, and even Magnison.
I know we have the right person as his youngest child, Joseph (Josef), is my 3rd great grandfather.
So just to be sure....the parents of Johannes Magnusson (1765-1825) were Magnus Andersson (1722-1766) and Britta Andersdotter (1731-1804), correct? And, is there any way to go back a generation or two? The writing is very scribbly for me to read, and I don't know how far back the books in Tranemo go.
Thanks as always,
Paul
-
Hi Paul and cheers.
Do you have any pages showing Johannes parents?
Ian
-
Ian:
Not really. I thought he was born 1 November 1722, possibly in Tranemo.
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v14945.b115.s108&page=main/index
It would be the last entry on the bottom right. Can you make out the name? Or maybe on the following page? I was hoping his parents' names would be mentioned.
Let me know what you think. I'll keep trying and let you know if I come across any other records.
Paul
-
Could this be Magnus Andersson's death record 21 May 1766?
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v14961.b19.s15&page=main/index
-
Whoops! I jumped ahead to who I think it Johannes' father. I will check on a family record listing Johannes with his parents.
-
Not really.
Ok.
I thought because you had the birth and death years that you had found these records. I took a look and had found Magnus' and Britta's death records.
The Magnus death record you found is the one I had found and believe it to be him, also here is Britta's (I think) death:
Tranemo C:7 (1787-1805) Bild 153 / sid 148 - last on left page.
Magnus died of "bröstsjuka" - some kind of lung disease (not specified). Died 12 May 1765.
Britta died of "ålderdoms svaghet" - old age. She was 73 years and 11 months old and buried 19 Aug 1804.
Ian
-
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v14945.b115.s108&page=main/index
It would be the last entry on the bottom right. Can you make out the name? Or maybe on the following page? I was hoping his parents' names would be mentioned.
This record is a burial record. All records seem to be in a chronological order.
The left page holds birth records and the last one on that page is from Hjerpesbo as is another one half way up.
I haven't yet decyphered them.
Ian
-
Awesome, Ian! Thanks for your comments. I will review everything tonight after work and get back to you.

Hi Ian:
I think we are good on the people I asked you about last week. Thanks for your help!
I am trying to locate the date when Anders Josef Björklund (could also be last name Josefsson) left Sweden for America. I have this record from Svenljunga 1881-1890....but I cannot find him in the regular household examination or moving out book. Can you give it a try?
Paul
-
Hi
According to the image you posted his place of residence was recorded as missing between the years 1881-1890.
Ian

Ok. I just found this

Yes, that's him. He was put in the missing persons list:

Hi Ian:
Can you tell me where this family moved next? And if the father died? Page 125, Måsberget, Jan Andersson, wife Maria Svensdotter, sons Joseph and Johannes. Maybe they left the parish in 1820?
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v44070.b73.s125&page=main/index
I looked in the next book, and maybe Maria was married to a different man with 2 new kids.
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v44071.b76.s129&page=main/index
The one I'm most interested in is Joseph, born 24 Sep 1810.
Thanks!
Paul
-
Hi
That wasn't easy. Here is what I found. It'll give you a head start.
Joseph and family in 1825: Knätte AI:3 (1815-1825) Bild 38 / sid 67
Joseph and family in 1825: Knätte AI:4 (1825-1836) Bild 44 / sid 65
Joseph and family in 1845: Knätte AI:5 (1835-1845) Bild 80 / sid 72
Joseph and family in 1851: Knätte AI:6 (1846-1851) Bild 76 / sid 69
Joseph and family in 1856: Knätte AI:7 (1852-1856) Bild 62 / sid 56
Joseph in 1881: Humla AI:7 (1867-1881) Bild 19 / sid 12
You'll notice that most of the family including Joseph were blind.
Ian
-
Great, Ian! Thank you!
I had seen on a later record (Humla) that Joseph was blind, but I did not realize most of the family was, too.
Thanks again for your help,
Paul
-
Cheers Paul
I thought you might have had some of those records but I posted anyway.
Ian

I only had the last one, so all of the others (Knätte) were very helpful. I appreciate it!

Quick question: Can Johan and Jan be used interchangeably for a first name?
-
Quick question: Can Johan and Jan be used interchangeably for a first name?
No not really but that means it didn't happen. I just haven't seen it myself.
Ian
-
Ok. Let me check my records. I have Jan Andersson all figured out, but I think for one record it said Johan. Or maybe it was hard to read. If I need clarification, I will let you know.
Thanks,
Paul
-
Hi Ian:
I got a little sidetracked with my search for Jan....I will get back to him soon.
I need help with this marriage record from 26 May 1751 (I think).
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v15351.b64.s58&page=main/index
Is it for Magnus Andersson and Britta Andersdotter? in Sjötofta? Any other info given?
Thanks, Paul
-
This is them:
26 May - Farmhand Magnus Andersson from Hierpesbo with maid from "Klev" (?) Britta Andersdotter.
Ian
-
Perfect!! Thanks!!
-
Hi Ian:
Here is a birth record for 1 Nov 1771 or 1772, supposedly for a Magnus Andersson:
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v14945.b115.s108&page=main/index
Do you see a Magnus Andersson anywhere? His parents were Anders Andersson and Margareta Nilsdotter. I don't see it, but it might be the correct record. He was born either 1 Nov 1771 or 1 Nov 1772 in Tranemo.
Thanks,
Paul
-
Hi
You have given a page for 1732 but have written 1772.
Also, can you give me the pages showing his date of birth please.
Ian
-
Sorry for my typos! I think he was born 1 Nov 1721 or 1722 (not 1771 or 1772).
I see what I think is a 1 November on the left side, 2nd or 3rd record from the top. But I don't know what year I'm looking at.
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v14945.b115.s108&page=main/index
I have his parents as Anders Andersson and Margareta Nilsdotter which I believe it correct. They lived mostly in Tranemo but a little while in Sjötofta.
Let me know if this helps a little. These records are almost impossible for me to understand.
Thanks, Paul
-
Hi
I should have written any pages showing his parents names.
Ian
-
Hi Ian:
Here is what I believe is the marriage record on 6 Jan 1721 in Tranemo for the parents of Magnus Andersson: Anders Andersson (born about 1694, buried 1 May 1748 in Tranemo) and Margareta Nilsdotter (born about 1699, buried 20 Oct 1760 in Tranemo).
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v14945.b111.s104&page=main/index
It's a little hard to read, but I do see the 6 of January 1721 and Margareta Nilsdotter.
Their son Magnus Andersson may have been born 1 Nov 1721 or 1 Nov 1722.
I haven't been able to find any other pages with the parents' names. Any thoughts?
Thanks, Paul
-
It's a little hard to read, but I do see the 6 of January 1721 and Margareta Nilsdotter.
Yes this seems to be them. Anders Andersson is recorded too. Also it looks as though Margareta was a widow.
Ian
-
Thanks for the info. It's possible she was a widow. I'll see if I can find that out for sure.
Paul
-
I see what I think is a 1 November on the left side, 2nd or 3rd record from the top. But I don't know what year I'm looking at.
It is from 1721..
Here is the page showing the year: Tranemo C:3 (1697-1732) Bild 111 / sid 104
-
I see what I think is a 1 November on the left side, 2nd or 3rd record from the top.
Hi
To help you out I have attached the record in question so you can perhaps try to decypher some records. It isn't easy but the more you look the easier it gets. This record says the son's name is Måns:
"1 november christnades andersson lilla son i herpesboo måns
tästi
lars i trädgården
gunnar i hierpesboo
? i gudarp
ungfru stina i tranemo
hustru kerstin i gudarp
hustru siria i tranemo"
1 November - christened Andersson's baby son in Herpesboo: Måns.
Witnesses:
Lars in Trädgården
Gunnar in Hierpesboo
? in Gudarp
spinster Stina in Tranemo
wife Kerstin in Gudarp
wife Siria in Tranemo
Ian
-
Very helpful! Thanks for this! Yes, it does get a little easier especially when you put the actual Swedish transcription and then the English translation.
I am sending a couple emails to you this morning. Hopefully you receive them OK.
Paul
-
I wonder if Måns and Magnus are the same person then. He is recorded as Magnus after his birth. I have a relative in the Netherlands who has done extensive work on this part of the tree. She had the 1 Nov 1721 baptism. But I do see where the name is Måns on the baptism record now that you pointed it out.
Paul

I am sending a couple emails to you this morning. Hopefully you receive them OK.
Cheers Paul.
Received with thanks. A very interesting collection. Really nice to see the photos with all the research.

Here is the Estate Inventory for Anders Andersson. You will see in the beginning that son Magnus Andersson is recorded along with wife Margareta Nilsdotter.
And at the end, there are many pages, the 3 children are listed after inheritng quite a lot of money. It seems that they were not poor.
Magnus Andersson.
Britta Andersdotter.
Agneta Andersdotter.
You'll see the columns at the top of the pages with the children's names written in. These show what pocessions they inherited too.

Hi Ian:
I hope it is not too late! #8 marriage between Tobias Karlsson and Hulda Elisabeth Josephson in 1905:
https://app.arkivdigital.se/production/index.html?aid=v183035a.b120.s6&page=main/index
Can you tell me if there is anything important written? Was is Tobias' 2nd marriage? I know Hulda had an illegitimate daughter 5 years before. Does it say anything about her or if Tobias adopted her?
Thanks!
Paul
-
Hi Paul
It just says that they were married in Falköping and both consented to their marriage. Nothing on the child or if it was Tobias' 2nd marriage.
Ian
-
I hope it is not too late!
No worries. I will take another subscription elsewhere.... I have changed my mind. Instead of the link you post can you just post the Parish, book and page please. Cheers.

Oh by the way, how did you get on with the probate?

Ok! Sounds good.
Thanks,

Hi Ian:
I hope this message finds you well! I couldn't locate your email address, so I thought I might be able to reach you through this thread.
There is one person I can't find info on. Her name is Selma, and her father was Magnus Larsson and her mother Hilda (or Hulda) Jonsson/Jonsdotter (or Johansdotter). Selma was born in Sweden in December 1871....or at least that what she put on some US documents. I have found many Selmas born in Sweden in 1871, but not with the correct parents. If you have time, could you see if you can find her birth or household examination record? She left for the US around 1889-1890.
Thanks!
Paul
-
Hi Paul
Can you tell me where Selma lived in USA.
Ian
-
Yes! She lived in Brooklyn, New York. She arrived around 1889/1890, probably to New York (but possibly to Boston). She married Alfred Bennett on April 9, 1898 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. Her husband Alfred (Andersson) Bennett was a coal man and ice man. She died on July 10, 1927 in Brooklyn. I have a lot more info on her in the US if you need it. Thanks!
-
Here you go. She was from Bäckebo Parish and you'll see on the right that she left on the 5 May 1889:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01mwf/
Ian
-
........and her birth 13 Dec 1871:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01mwg/
Ian
-
I suppose you have Alfred in Sweden?
Ian
-
Selma's brother left for USA in 1902 only to return in 1911:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01mwh/
Ian
-
Thank you, Ian!! Yes, I have everything on Alfred, his siblings, parents, grandparents, etc. His sister Ida was my great grandmother who you helped me with earlier in the year.
But Selma's birth in Sweden was a mystery to me. She met a sad end.....she was brutally murdered in Brooklyn in 1927. She accidentally walked in on a man killing another woman, and when he saw her, he had to eliminate her as a witness. He eventually received the death penalty.
Alfred and Selma had 4 children. I have located one living grandchild and a few living great grandchildren. I have reached out to them but have not heard back.
Thanks again for your help!!!! I really appreciate it.
Paul
-
Cheers Paul and you're welcome.

I don't know if this link will work or not. Selma is 3rd on the list. It says she went back to Sweden on July 29, 1897, before she married in 1898. I took a quick look but did not see evidence of this trip back to Sweden. She must have come back quickly though as she married in NY less than a year later.
Thanks again for all your help.
Paul
-
I can't see the record unfortunately. I'll take a look in the Church Books later on after work tonight.
Ian
-
I have a Selma Augusta Larsson aged 25 in 1897 going back to USA:
It could be her.
-
I did find her brother Jan's (with surname Nordin) passenger list going to Selma in 1905 - nr4:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-8161-FLZ?i=649&cc=1368704
Here is Selma on the 1905 Census at Vanderbilt Avenue:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-DCK4?i=7&cc=1463113
Ian
-
I think this is her on the 1897 New York passenger list:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L9ND-GSSD
Ian
-
Ian...amazing work!! Thank you so much!! Everything matches up perfectly. I had found a record of her brother leaving Sweden in Nov 1902 on ancestry.com, but I could not find the passenger list when the ship arrived in NY, and I did not know who he was visiting.
Again, I can't tell you how much all of this helps my research.
Paul
-
Cheers Paul.
Have just read the murder article from 12 July 1927 in The New York Sun. What a way to go, really sad.
Ian
-
Yes, it was horrible. My great grandmother Ida (who was Selma's sister-in-law) was in Connecticut, about an hour or so from Brooklyn. They called her to let her know what happened, and immediately she went to be with her brother Alfred. Alfred had to identify Selma's remains (severed head, finger with ring, etc) and he had to testify at the trial. I have tons of articles and pictures regarding the murder and trial.
There is one granddaughter of Alfred and Selma still alive. I have written a letter to her but have not heard back.
-
Lets hope she gets back to you then.
Ian
-
She did! Actually, her granddaughter did. They received my letter. They new Selma was murdered but did not know much of the details. We are now communicating.
-
Hi Paul
That's great news.
Ian
-
Hi Ian: Hope you are well. I have another favor to ask when you have time. I am trying to find out any info on Ida Elisabeth Nilsson Lindskog born 10 Nov 1905 in Tornevalla, Östergötland. Her father Gustaf Robert Nilsson Lindskog died 25 Aug 1905 in Tornevalla before Ida Elisabeth was born. I believe Gustaf (who was 25 when he died) got pneumonia while serving in the military. Ida Elisabeth's mother was Carolina Elisabeth Carlsson (born 19 Nov 1875 in Skeda, Östergötland and died 25 Sept 1956 in Linkoping).
I have a second cousin who went to Sweden in 1967 and met with one of her mother's cousins. We have a picture but there is no writing on the front or back. To be a cousin of her mother's, there are only a few possibilities. Ida Elisabeth looks like a good candidate based on her age (unless you find she died before 1967).
Thanks in advance for your help.
Paul
-
Hi
All is well thanks.
Ida Elizabeth Lindskog was living with an Erik Nyström in 1971 in Linköping. She was living with a Johan Rosén in 1981. She died 8 Feb 1999 in Linköping.
Ian
-
Ian, you are amazing!! Thank you for this information. I really appreciate it.
Paul
-
Cheers Paul.
Ian
-
It looks like she may have married Erik Nyström first (not sure when), and then married Johan August Rosén on 2 Sep 1972. So Ida could be the woman my second cousin met in 1967!
Thanks again,
Paul
-
Yes I agree.
-
In the 1967 picture, the woman is sitting next to a man (1st husband Erik probably) and they both look like they are in their 60s.
-
It looks like she may have married Erik Nyström first (not sure when)
Erik Rudolf Nyström.
They were married 4 Oct 1958. He was born 29 May 1897 in Motala. He died 27 Jan 1971.
Ian
-
Awesome!! Thank you, Ian!!
-
You're welcome Paul.
Ian

Hi Ian: I need just a little help if you have time.
Anna Britta Magnusdotter, born in 1826 (I think 7 Nov in Ambjornarp/Tranemo...or in April 1826) married Josef Johansson Björn (he was born 13 Feb 1812 in Ambjornarp) in October 1860, possibly the 13th. She died on 13 Dec 1902 in Ambjornarp (Grasasen farm?). I have her father as Magnus Götharsson and mother Caisa (don't know last name).
Can you confirm the dates for me? And if you can find her mother's full name, that would be great.
Her husband Josef Björn died 16 Feb 1899 in Ambjornarp if that helps. You helped me with him several months ago.
Thanks as always for your help!

Awesome!
For some reason, I couldn’t get the riksarkivet website to work on my computer or iPad last night. But using your links and my iPhone, it works.
Interesting info...I believe Anna Britta confessed in 1850 to a self-induced abortion. Josef Bjorn may have been involved in the investigation as a physician (supposedly he was a homeopathic doctor in addition to being a corporal). Then 10 years later after Josef became a widower, they married and had 4 children.
Thanks again!

Hi Ian: I hope this link works as the website is now finally working on my computer. Can you read the comments for Anna Britta on the right (row 22)? Also, her birth date was crossed out and changed...but you definitely found the correct date (which is the one crossed out). I wonder why they would do this.
No rush on the translation....just whenever you have time.
Thanks again,

Hi Ian: I hope you are well!! I have started doing a little more research. Can you take a look at this 1765 baptism record from Kumla for Peter (top right)?I think he went into the military and was called Peter Ofverman as an adult. Is his father’s last name Sterling? I’m not sure he is the correct Peter. He married Helena or Lena Jonsdotter in 1787 (I think....maybe in Kumla or Karstad...I couldn’t find it). I have all of the info from Peter and Helena (Lena) down to me. I’m hoping to trace back a few generations of Peter and Helena (correct birthdates, parents, and grandparents).
Please let me know if you can help. No rush....just when you have time.
Paul

Hi Paul
All's well thanks. Hoping you too are also well.
No worries. Can you give me the link to any of Peter's records, household, marriage and children please, and I'll see what I can do.
I may have looked at these a while back but my memory isn't what it used to be.
Ian

Is his father’s last name Sterling?
Without digging deeper for now the name looks like Jerling. The minister was a bit lazy with this "J" I believe.

Hi Ian: Thanks for getting back to me!
Here is a link to Peter and Helena/Lena’s daughter Eva Elisabeth (sometimes Eva Lisa) Ofverman baptism record, born 25 July 1799 in Kumla, Ostergotland. Eva is my 3rd Great Grandmother.
https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0016571_00024#?c=&m=&s=&cv=23&xywh=33%2C1923%2C3189%2C3170
I have on my tree that Peter Ofverman was born around 1765 and Helena/Lena Jonsdotter around 1764...but I don’t have the baptism records.
I have the following children for Peter and Helena/Lena:
1. Maria, born 31 Aug 1788 and died 3 Jan 1807, both in Kumla
2. Anna Greta, born 21 Feb 1792 in Kumla (no death info)
3. Per Goran, born 17 Sep 1794 in Kumla (no death info)
4. Eva Elisabeth/Lisa, born 25 July 1799 in Kumla, married Eric Hugo 1 March 1832 in Sya, died 3 July 1883 in Sya.
5. Christina Katarina born 30 April 1804 in Kumla (no death info)
There could be more children.
I don’t have death info for Peter or Helena/Lena.
Let me know if this is enough info. I am hoping to trace this line back as far as possible, especially Helena/Lena Jonsdotter as I am working on extending my maternal (mtDNA) line and she is my direct maternal line ancestor.
Thanks!

Peter's father was Göran Håkansson
Lena's father was Jonas Månsson

Peter Ofverman death 10 May 1825 in Harstad
-
According to Peter's death record he was married....... "gift".
So the record you found for her is not her.
Ian
-
I saw that but hoped it was wrong. Could he have married again after Lena died? Her death record in 1812 matches up...it mentions his name and that she was 47 years old (which she would have been). His death record seems correct because he would have been 61 years old. I’ll keep checking.
-
I'll take a look tomorrow. It is late here now.
Ian

Yes you are correct, I should have read the death record first. Peter did marry again and then moved from Kumla to Harstads in 1823.

It is indeed.
All it says is that she was Peter's wife and came from Carleby village and was born 4 Dec 1764. Her father was Jonas Carlström also a soldier from the "Första livgrenadjärregementet" as was Peter.

Hi
On ArkivDigital there the Inventory of Estates for Peter Öfverman and Per Göran Öfverman.
Per Göran died in 1843 1842 in Rök Parish:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01ntv/
Ian
-
Thanks! It looks like from the link that he died 8 Oct 1842. Did I read that right?
I don’t have the subscription for ArkivDigital anymore. Did that site become free or would I have to buy a new subscription? I bought a few subscriptions last year when I was doing a lot of research.
Thanks,
Paul
-
Yes he died then. Just noticed I had written 1843. (now corrected).
Ian
-
ArkivDigital is not free unfortunately.
I did notice that Harstad Parish on Arkivdigital has a lot more books to go through including marriage and death books which are for some reason not on Riksarkivet. Also you might find some info on Peter in the soldier books in the general muster rolls.
Ian
-
Is there any way to find out when he started using the Ofverman last name?
He would have received that name when he became a soldier.
As I said in the earlier post you might find him in the muster rolls for Harstad or Kumla in the "Första livgrenadjärregementet".
Here is an explanation on Swedish soldiers' names:
https://nordicroots.wordpress.com/2014/03/05/swedish-surnames-soldiers/

Excellent information and explanation!! I may get a short subscription to ArkivDigital to check on those things that are only available there.
Thanks again for taking the time to help me. I really appreciate it!

Here is a record of Peter in the muster rolls in Kumla in the Östgöta regemente. It says that he was discharged because of a hernia.

There maybe more but you'll have to go through many books. He should also be in Harstad but which book he is in is any one's guess.

I couldn't help myself. Here are all his records from the muster rolls. I'll just post the sources. The records will look like the one I posted. He joined the army in 1786.

AWESOME!! Thank you so much for tracking all this down. I’m pretty good at locating stuff in the basic record books, but I’m not well-versed in muster rolls and military records. He is a direct ancestor of mine, so this information is very important to me.
Paul

Just thought I'd explain the numbers in the image I posted which also corresponds to all the other records.
77: soldier's dwelling number.
45: his age.
9.0: years of service (although this isn't correct).
5 9: 5 foot 9 inches tall.

Hi Ian:
Hope you are well. Can you tell me if this looks like a birth record for Anders Martensson born (or baptized) 4 Dec 1664 in Sjotofta? I have 2 screen shots. I can't make out much. His parents should be Marten Andersson and Anna Svensdotter. Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi Ian:

I checked out the estate records and muster rolls you had sent links to earlier. Thanks again for sending those.

Hi Ian:
Can you read the death record from Svanshals in 1752 for Segrid? I believe she was born in 1692 and married Peter Ofverman in 1721. Is that right? I can't make out the date of her death, maybe 15 March?
Thanks!
Paul
https://app.arkivdigital.se/volume/v40934?image=258
-
Hi
Very hard to decypher but here is what I could make out.
"Buried 31 March. Segrid Andersdotter born January 1692. Married 1721. 8 children of which 3 dead. Died 29 March, 60 days and 3 months."
Great you wrote the parish as I don't have a sub on ArkivDigital.
Ian
-
Awesome, Ian! I don’t know how you do it....but you did it again! Thanks again for your help.
Paul
-
Here is her husband Peter Ofverman who died 18 April 1762 in Svanshals. Anything else you can see?
Thanks,
Paul
-
Cheers Paul
Nothing special.
Died 18 April. Born in Strå Parish. Married twice and was 67 years old.
Ian
-
Got it! Thanks again!
Paul
-
Could this be Peter’s birth record...1695 in Strå parish? I can’t see any other name that’s close to Peter for 1695.
Paul
-
This one looks like Pehr. Peter and Pehr were interchangeable back then so it could well be him.
Ian
-
Here is Petter Ofverman's soldier record. His surname is Andersson. I noticed also that his death record stated that he was a horseman in the army - "Ryttaren".
-
Thanks, Ian! This is very helpful.
From the potential 1695 birth record for Pehr/Peter, it looks like his father’s name was Anders Andersson, correct? That would match the surname on the soldier record you found. I know that Anders is a common first name, and hence Andersson is a common surname...but maybe we found his father’s name.
I tried to search household records for Svanshals and Stra, but there are some gaps in the early 1700s.
Thanks again for all your help! I appreciate it.
Paul
-
Hi Ian:
What do you make of this attached record? I found this 1727 birth record for Kjerstin/Kerstin. Does is say oakta under her name? I see Petter Andersson Ofverman in the record. Is he the father? Any other info?
Petter is my 6th GG. I descend from his daughter Greta (who has the surname Pehrsdotter in the church records....so the 1695 Pehr birth record could be correct). Kjerstin would have been a sister to Greta. Greta was born in April 1733.
Paul
-
He is just a witness.
Ian
-
From the potential 1695 birth record for Pehr/Peter, it looks like his father’s name was Anders Andersson, correct?
Correct.
Ian
-
Perfect! Thanks for the clarification.
Paul
-
Hi Ian: Can you make out the word I circled in red? I believe it might be the birth parish for Mans Danielsson. This is his death record.
Thanks,
Paul
-
I don't think it is a parish. It says Jälsnäs. It could be a farm.
Can you give the source please.
Ian
-
Sure. It is Sjogestad, Ostergotland. Mans Danielsson died 22 June 1812.
Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Paul
-
Do you have any other sources/records for him?
Ian
-
I found him and family in the household book:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01o78/
I am still none the wiser.
Ian
-
It could be Järsnäs Parish.
Ian

I think it is Järsnäs because he came from Lommaryd Parish in 1772. Both parishes are in Småland.
Ian

Hi Ian:
I’m researching Nils Magnus Jonsson again. The attached should be his birth record 19 Sep 1806 in Högsby, Kalmar (although other records state his birth date as 16 Sep 1806).
I think I found his parents at Torrebo farm in 1806 in the same parish. The father is Jonas Nilsson (born 1777) and mother Catharina or Catherine Persdotter (born 1781) although one record I found for her might have her last name as Carlsdotter.
I think Jonas Nilsson and Catharine Persdotter married on 3 Oct 1806 in Högsby, Kalmar....a couple weeks after Nils was born.
Questions:
1) From the attached birth record, what does it say under his name.... ? Barnet (baby)
2) Do you think I have the correct marriage record for Jonas Nilsson and Catharine Persdotter on 3 Oct 1806?
With your previous help, I was able to trace Nils Magnus Jonsson until his death in August 1866 due to drowning. He lived most of his adult life on Hinshult farm in Kraksmala, Kalmar.
Thanks for any guidance!
Paul
-
1) From the attached birth record, what does it say under his name.... ? Barnet (baby)
It says "Ista" - short for första meaning first child.
"barnet" means child not baby.
Ian
-
I think I found his parents at Torrebo farm in 1806 in the same parish. The father is Jonas Nilsson (born 1777) and mother Catharina or Catherine Persdotter (born 1781) although one record I found for her might have her last name as Carlsdotter.
Do you have the source for this record?
Ian
-
Hi Ian:
Here is the household record from 1806 in Högsby. I found in the marriage book for Högsby a possible marriage for Jonas and Catherina in October 1806. Let me know if this helps.
Thanks, Paul
-
Here is a larger view of the page
-
Hi
Yes I think it is the same Jonas and Catharina even though her surname is incorrect. It actually says Torsebo.
Ian
-
That helps!! Thanks!!
-
Here is the 3 Oct 1806 marriage record that I found. Would it be odd that they married after Nils was born? Would something have been written in his 19 Sep 1806 birth record....that his parents were not married?
-
Yes sometimes but I do know if they pay a fine and get married quickly they can get away with it.
-
Ha! Ok...that helps.
Paul
-
Hi Ian: The bottom record of the attached is a birth record from Olme, Varmland for Maja Cajsa (oakta), born 10 Sep 1825. Her mother was Anna Maja Hakansdotter. Does it say her father was Peter Qvarnstrom (Kvarnstrom)? Or is the father not named?
Thanks!
Paul
-
It says that farmhand Peter Qvarnström is said to be the father.
Ian
-
Perfect! Thanks!
Paul
-
Here is Maja Cajsa’s mother birth record...another oakta, born 28 Jan 1803 in Olme, Varmland. Does it say her mother is Caisa Johansdotter? And possibly the father is Hakan Sjogren? Anna Maja used the last name Hakansdotter....so maybe the correct father is listed.
Thanks!
Paul
-
Yes you are correct. Same as the one before, it is said that he is the father. Håkan is a servant.
Ian
-
Awesome! Thanks again!
Paul
-
Hi Ian:
Here is a birth record from Varnum, Varmland of Petter Swensson, born 9 Dec 1742. Can you make out the parents’ names? Anything else of interest?
Thanks,
Paul
-
Parents' names are Sven Persson and Annicka Hansdotter (I think). Nothing else of interest apart from witnesses.
Ian
-
Got it! Thanks again!
Paul

Hi Ian:
I am researching Axel Theodor Andersson Ostrom. He was born on 3 Jan 1865 in Veta, Östergötland. His moving out record from Odeshog states he left Sweden on 17 Nov 1888 for America. I can’t seem to find any passenger list for him after leaving Sweden. I thought I found him in Connecticut, but now I think I have the wrong person. When you have time, can you check?
As always, I appreciate your help!
Paul
-
Here is the moving out record
-
Hi Ian: I just confirmed that I had the wrong Axel Anderson in my tree. Ugh!! At least now I know. I had an Axel Anderson who was born in 1866 and moved to Connecticut near my other Anderson relatives. But he is the wrong person. He died in 1945 in Naugatuck, CT.
The correct person is Axel Teodor Andersson Ostrom who left Odeshog parish for America on 17 Nov 1888. He was born 3 Jan 1865 in Veta, Ostergotland. I searched the passenger list book from Malmo/Gothenburg in late November 1888 through February 1889. I didn’t see any Axel T. Ostrom or similar.
Would he have a military record?
I found one record on ancestry.com that says he may have gone to Copenhagen and then New York.
Is there anything in the written comments in the records above that could help?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Paul
-
Hi Ian: I think I figured out Axel's military connection. Was he in the livgrenadjärregementet? I researched a bit about the Life Grenadier Regiment in Östergötland.
-
Here he is on the SS "Ohio" in April/May 1888:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01o8k/
Even though the minister had written he must have left a lot earlier.
Ian
-
Here is his Danish record:
-
Thanks! I found that earlier passenger list record too, but I dismissed it because his moving out date was so much later in the year in November. But it has to be him. The name matches perfectly and the age is right.
I thought I had him using the name Axel Anderson in Connecticut living near his siblings. But he is not the correct guy. He may have moved to another state.
I searched later records in Sweden in case he moved back, but I don’t see him anywhere (based on his birth date).
Thanks again,
Paul
-
Hi Ian:
I hope all is well. I have a baptism record from January 1665, Tranemo. The name is supposed to be Hans, baptized on 29 Jan 1665. Can you confirm this? Does it say the father’s or mother’s names? Any other info?
Thanks!
Paul
-
Or it could be Anders with father Hans. I’m not sure.
Paul
-
Hi Paul
All's well thanks.
"29 Hans son in Backagården in Berg: Anders"
Ian
-
Hi Ian:
Thanks for the help!
I realize now I had a mistake on my tree, and this is the first step to fix it.
I’m sure I will be in touch again soon.
Paul
-
Hi Ian: This should be the marriage record of the parents of Anders. I believe the marriage date is 7 Feb 1664 in Tranemo. The man should be Hans Andersson and the wife Martha (or Marta) Hansdotter. It looks like Backagarden in Berg. Can you confirm this?
Thanks,
Paul
-
You are correct. Martha came from Jerphult.
Your understanding of old Swedish has become very commendable. Great stuff.

Awesome! Thanks for the confirmation.
I have gotten a lot better. I also see what other people have posted on ancestry or geni, but I always want to find the actual proof/record as they often have no records attached (and sometimes they are wrong or they are guessing).
Thanks again,
Paul

Hi Ian: Long time! Just wanted to again say THANKS for all the help you gave me a few years back. I have been able to help others including some cousins I connected with who still live in Sweden. Hope you and your family had a wonderful Christmas. Paul
