Title: Missing from the Workington 1841 Census?
Post by: Relsearcher on Monday 17 July 17 08:17 BST (UK)
Hi!  I'm having a bit of an irritating time trying to find a person in the 1841 Census in Workington, Cumberland.  I assume that is where he is as and I have found him in subsequent census returns quite easily.

His name was Isaiah Gilliead - but both of these names have numerous spellings I have discovered by looking through the records over the years!

He was born c1820 in Workington.  He married Margaret Roney/Ronney in 1843 in Workington.  He was a Coal Miner.  His father was called Edward and I have found him in the 1841 Census in Workington, aged 45.  This would mean he was born c1796 which would mean his son Isaiah would be right to be born c1820.  However, I have come across an Isaiah Gilead, Mariner in the Workington 1841 return but he has the age of 40 which would mean he was born roughly 20 years earlier than my Isaiah.  I know that ages were rounded down in the 1841 Census so this means this man could be even older.  Maybe this Isaiah was a brother of Edward, and therefore my Isaiah's uncle?

Can anyone spot what I am missing?

Many thanks, Nina

The Isaiah Gilead aged 40 years in 1841 married a Margaret Scrugham  St. John'S, Workington, Cumberland 6 November 1842 - the 1841 census shows him living with the Scrugham (transcribed as Laugham on anc)  family on the 1841 census.
His father was Benjamin Gilead according to England, Select Marriages, 1538–1973.

The baptism for Edward Gilead 10 June 1792 Saint Michael,Workington gives father as Benjamin and mother Jane.  So its possible the other Isaiah is the son of Benjamin and an Uncle.
There was a Benjamin Gilead baptised Saint Michael,Workington 6 June 1790 - parents Benjamin and Jane Gilead.  That could be the Benjamin who passed away 24 March 1862 Workington aged 72 years so born 1790.

and a John Gilard - 29 May 1788

Is this the marriage for Edward Gilead to Jane Daley - 7 July 1817 Workington

Marriage of Benjamin Gilead and Jane White - 15 February 1786 St Michaels - Workington

No sign of your Isaiah - could he have been a mariner at that time  ???  Both Whitehaven and Workington were very busy sea-ports  ???  Or is he just "lost" in transcription  ???
Benjamin Gilead born 1790 appears on the 1851 census - Curwen Street Workington - Benjamin - widowed - bookbinder - lodger with Mary Scott also widowed. Don't see him in earlier census.  Could have been badly mis-transcribed I suppose  ::)

I guess he could have started off as a mariner but he quickly became a coal miner for the rest of his life ... so typical the person I want to find has got 'lost' somewhere at that time!  Thanks for all your help! Nina

IF the father of both Edward and Benjamin Gilead was another Benjamin Gilead- perhaps the one born 1755 Workington who passed away 22 April 1838 - aged 83 years - could be the father of those two  ???

There is an Isaiah Gillead of Workington who was a mariner in the records from 1845 to 1854, so possibly also in 1841.

The other Isaiah born 1800 who married Margaret Scrugham in 1842 was a mariner on the 1841 census.

Could this be more likely for John Gilead - 1841 Collier West Workington - think the Gindat surname is Tindall on the anc site  - since Joseph Tindall married Martha Mucklewean at St Michaels Workington in 1808.

Joseph Gindat   53 Innkeeper. Martha Gindat   56
George Gindat   20 Joseph Gindat   7
Daniel Gindat   4
John Gillied 20 Coal-Leader.

Think we've found the same one, Sandra, and I added it a while back - but different ref - I remember seeing Tindall as an Innkeeper. Will recheck the ref.

Ref that I have is HO107/159/9b/45/17

Think I must have misread the 9b for a 5b

Just had a thought that, apart from Isaiah being very badly indexed, missing from the census, at sea, etc.,  he might have been working on the night shift in the coal mine.  I recall that I couldn't find a coal mining ancestor on one of the early censuses and was told that the mine foreman was instructed to list all miners working in the colliery at midnight on census day/night and enter them. Not sure how many conformed to this or how true it was but this could explain the absence.

Thank you everyone for your time, help and info with this!  Gadget ... that's a thought - he may well have been down a mine at the time!  Nina

Thank you.  I am descended from Edward, Isaiah and Benjamin through my father's mother.  He was given her maiden name as his middle name as was another brother.

William Gilliead (b. 1845. m. Sarah Mullen c. 1870) moved to Leadgate Co Durham.  He had six children (one boy was called Isaiah) including my grandmother (Elizabeth) who, with a sister (Sarah), married my grandfather and one of his brothers.  After his wife's death, William married a widow, Ann Snowdon.

There is a professional footballer called Alex Gilliead from the north east and I sometimes wonder if he is descended from one my grandmother's brothers.

Best wishes,

John
