Does anyone have info on the Mabbott family who lived in the Meadows area Nottingham 1800's....they had 20 children.
-
The 1881 census has 35 people by the name of Mabbott, living in Nottingham ;D
Plus 3 Mabbatt and a pair of Mabbutt.
Do you have any names?
And a better idea of dates? "1800s" applies to a period of 100 years!
-
My husband's grandfather was the youngest of 20 children, his name was Jack Mabbott and was born around 1870 ? in the Meadow's area of Nottingham......In the 1890's he was a Notts County Football player before going into the army where he rose to Sargeant.........I am trying to find the name of his parent's and siblings......
-
The 1881 census is free to search, on a number of sites.
Jack could be a John? Quite a common nickname.

Yes, thanks for your research, in fact I do not have a clue whether this is the right family as I only know that they lived in 2 houses in the Meadows as there were so many of them......As Jack was the youngest and born around 1870, his family and parents would have probably been born in the 1820's or even before, I think the John Mabbott born September 1872 may be the right person, although I am sure I was told that he was registered as Jack, he married Gertrude Firman around the late 1890's had a son Lesley, late 1890's and a daughter Winifred in May 1908...............I do not think I will be having much luck with this, so I will leave it.........Thankyou for your help - Libralady
-
Using FreeBMD, I can't see a Birth Registration for a Jack Mabbott (& variations) in Nottingham, 1868-1872?
But there is a John Mabbott - mother's maiden name of Worthington, as noted before.
Where does your information come from?
-
My mother in law was Winifred Mabbott born 18th May 1908, passed away 21st November 1997......My information came from her.....her father was Jack Mabboot born 1872 in the Meadows, the youngest of 20 children who all survived....He married Gertrude Firman from Wymeswold around the late 1890's....Had a son Lesley Harold around that time and then Winifred born later.......I am married to Malcolm, Winifred's son........Libralady.
-
Hi if Gertrude Firman was the Sophia Gertrude Firman who married 16th March 1895 Nottingham, St John then she married John Mabbott?

-
Yes, she was Sophia Gertrude Firman and married around that time to Jack/John Mabbott.........who is St John?....Libralady

I was led to believe that they married at St Mary's church in the Lace Market Nottingham, someone obviously telling me porkies.........I know about grandma, I was just curious about this very large Mabbott family living in the Meadows, their names, ages etc......but I doubt if I will ever get to know......thanks for your help....Libralady.
-
The 1901 census has John & Gertude (and Leslie) living Glossop Terrace, Nottingham.
Gertude born c1874, Nottingham.
John born c1873, Nottingham.
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XSNZ-H28
The only John Mabbott born in Nottingham around that time was the John I mentioned earlier - with a mother's maiden name of Worthington ;D
Looks like we are back to the family I found earlier?
-
I know about them living at 6 Glossop Terrace the Meadows with Lesley before they moved to New Basford in 1910.........I just wanted to know about the very large Mabbott family living in the Meadows in the 1800's and who they all were......but, not meant to be....Thanks - Libralady

So, just 9 children?
-
Must be the wrong family as I know there were 20 of them, they lived in 2 houses knocked together and Jack was the youngest, maybe it was his aunt and her family you have contacted..........Libralady.
-
The John Mabbutt I found in 1901, with Gertrude and Leslie matches the John Mabbutt I found in 1891, 1881 and 1871.
There are no other candidates on Birth Registrations or censuses ???
Of course, I can't make you believe the evidence I have found? ::)
-
Obviously somebody has been telling me porkies then, nobody to ask to check on this info, as everybody who would know is now deceased..........thankyou for help - Libralady
-
In my personal experience, family tales should be treated with a huge amount of salt! ;D ::)
There's usually a nugget of truth in there somewhere; but the details get mixed up somewhere along the line.
-
That family have never been known for their truthfulness, but more than one person have commented on the 20 children born in the Meadows to this family......The story went that they lived in 2 houses and the Mabbotts along with the next door neighbours both had 19 children each, then, Old lady Mabbott had a 20th and the neighbour stopped talking to her as she felt outdone by her having 1 child more than her - I have always been curious to find out who they all are, pity this site did not exist years ago........Maybe it is just a story, maybe not, but we will never know now as everybody concerned is deceased.......thanks for your help, Libralady.........
-
I'm at the library today - so I can check census images ;D

There is a Frederick Mabbott(25) with wife Caroline(26) at number 11.

1891 has the family at 3 St John's Church Yard.

I can't give details from the 1911 census but if you look at Harrietts entry you will see how many children she supposedly had ;D
-
Thankyou for your help - much appreciated, maybe I will get to the bottom of it one day.......Libralady..
-
Could it be that the story doesn't relate to the Mabbutts, but another branch of the family?
The mother's or grandmother's family perhaps?
-
K Garrad - No it is definitely them, a right rum lot they all are too, thanks again for your help.....Libralady
-
There are only 8 baptisms for children of John and Harriet Mabbott on NFHS. The names are a match - apart from frederick- to the names posted by KGarrad
John Mabbott born 6 July 1872 and baptised 11 July 1875 at Nottingham, St John. Abode 6 Bath Place, father a traveller. Other addresses Leenside ( 2 Kids) and Queens Place these 4 kids baptised at St Marys father a sawyer.

Little on the football here....
-
Larkspur He was known as Jack Mabbott, I think you seem to have the birthdate right and he married Sophia Gertrude in 1895........But if his parent's did have 20 children, then the older ones would be in their 20's possibly 30's by he time he was born (if he was the youngest)........So the older Mabbott's would be married with children of their own, possibly called Mabbott and living in the same district, so that could cause confusion.......Incidently, he did play football for Notts County in the 1890's ws a professional as Preston Northend wanted to buy him....Notts County wanted 50 guineas for him, but, Preston said it was too much, so he stayed with Notts......Footballer's did not get paid obscene money as they do today, so he left and joined the army where he rose to Sargeant.......My mother in law Winifred was born in 1908 when he left....He was sent to Ireland when the First World War started........An article was written about him in the Football Post back in the 1950's as he was the oldest living Professional Footballer at the time, I have been trying to purchase the Newspaper, but without success, not having much luck with these Mabbotts..............Incidently, his grandson, also a Jack Mabbott owned FMS, Industrial Cleaning firm in Nottingham in the 1960's - 2001..........thanks for your help - Libralady
-
Hi Libralady,
I think that Winifred Mabbott was referring to her great grandfather John Mabbott b.1838 Bingham.
and not John Abbott b. 1872.
1841 Census HO107/853/52 Needham Street Bingham Nottingham
John Mabbott 60/64
Jane Mabbott 30/34 (nee Huskinson)
Martha Abbott 19/23
Eliza Abbott 17/21
Emma 9
Harriett 8
Jane 6
Maria 5
John 3
Agnes 2
Sarah 0
another 2 children on 1851 Census HO107/2139/196/46 Needham Street
Ann 8 and Frederick 6
John Mabbott b married Martha Barratt 24/11/1816 Radcliffe on Trent Nottingham
and there is St Mary's Church in this area,
John and Martha, I found 7 children but there could have been more.
John Mabbott married Jane Huskinson 3/2/1831 St Nicholas Church. Nottingham
John b.1838 mmn Huskinson, as all the other children
Needham Street could have been the 2-houses.
All worth considering.

Marj - Thanks so much, I think you may be right, my mother-in-law Winifred was in her 60's when I married her son Malcolm and she did tend get confused, was a great story teller. she was the daughter of Jack Mabbott and Sophia Gertrude Mabbott, nee Firman, she was born to them in later life as her father was a regular in the army, she had an older brother Lesley Harold born to them when they lived on Glossop Terrace the Meadows around 1898/99.......I cannot remember her mentioning Bingham, she talked a lot about Wymeswold where her mother came from........I have always been intrigued by this very large family supposedly living in the meadows and have tried to find out about all of them, I never heard of many Mabbott's living around Nottingham and you would have thought with such a large family there would be lots of them around - I did meet one of her cousins's Doris Conroy, nee Mabbott who I think related the story as well, also met one of Lesley's sons John Mabbott who had an industrial cleaning Business called FMS on Queens Drive Nottingham around 1960/70's as I used to work for him.......but anyway, I tried......thanks again for your help...

Hi,
The John Mabbott with all the children is surely the John Mabbott born in Cropwell Bishop in 1780.
He married 4 times (and every time he's down as a bachelor!)
Married Helen Cooper in 1801 and they had John (both died in 1803)
Wife no 2 was Isabella Harwood (married 1804) and they had John, William and Elizabeth (Isabella died in 1815)
Wife no 3 was Martha Barratt (married 1816) who produced Alfred, 2 Richards, Martha, Eliza, 2 Sarahs, Anne and May before dying before Christmas 1829
And wife no 4 was Jane Huskinson (married 1831) mother of Emma, Harriett, Jane, Maria, John (father in law to Sarah Gertrude Firman), Agness, Sarah Anne, Annie, Frederick, Joseph Thorpe and George before dying in 1848
A grand total of 24 children.
