Title: David Lyall and Catharine Mill/Milne, Montrose 1814-1856
Post by: birdboot on Friday 28 July 17 11:21 BST (UK)
MODIFIED FROM ORIGINAL POST
I am looking for Catharine Lyall, m/s Mill or Milne, in 1841 and 1851.

David Lyall married Catharine "Mill" on 7 August 1814 in Montrose.  He was a merchant in High Street, Montrose.  I have a grave record:

Stone number 333
1844. David Milne died 22 January 1822 aged 87, grandson William Reid died here 13 August 1844 aged 36. (east side) David Lyall merchant in Montrose died 21 November 1842 aged 71, wife Mrs Catherine Lyall d8ied 24 February 1856 aged 79.

There is a death of Catharine Lyall, widow of David Lyall, Grocer, High Street, on 24 February 1856, aged 80  Her father is given as David Milne.  Informant was Helen Ross, a cousin, of Lochside.

Given that David died 1842 and Catharine 1856, I can find no census record for them in 1841, or for Catharine in 1851.  The only census in Montrose for David Lyall is one for David Lyall, Shoemaker, aged 65, living with Helen Morrow aged 60 who was I think a servant.

Hi Birdboot

https://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

1851: High Street, Lyalls Close, Montrose, Angus
REF: Parish 312, ED: 3/ Pg4 / HS 13
Head: Catherine LYALL, 72, Annuitant, b Montrose
Servant: Betsy GRAHAM 48, House Servant, b St Cyrus, Kincardineshire

Maybe a coincidence, but the head of the next forward household, was a Jane ROSS.

Cheers

Thanks for that, Ambly.  Strange that it doesn't come up on Scotland's People search.  It does on Ancestry but badly transcribed.

I rather like Dotsy as a name  ;)

She - Betsy, is on Scotlands People 1851, but like you - unable to raise Catherine in an Index search.

Cheers

For 1841, I think this may be them:

Wm Taylor Imrie 30 propietor b. Scotland
Agnes Blair 30
David Lyall 60 grocer b. Scotland
Catherine Lyall 50
Elisbeth Walker 35 servant
Jessy Stevart 25 servant

Address: Lunan, Angus

Many thanks Monica, I am sure that is them.  I wonder what they were doing there, the names Imrie and Blair mean nothing to me.

Birdboot, I recommend looking at the original of that census at Scotland's People. It isn't unheard of for transcriptions to lump together two different households.

The Blair-Imrie family owns land at Lunan, including the home farm and the big house which was a hotel and then a care home.

Thanks for that suggestion, Forfarian.  I have had a look and one thing that interests me is that it appears that David Lyall was not born in the county.  I have been trying to look for his birth, which according to his grave inscription should be about 1771.  There is one in Montrose, father Andrew, but that christian name does not appear in the Lyall family.  The closest match regarding date and father's name is at Fordoun on 16 April 1771 to William Lyall.  This would fit with 'out of county'.

Just revisiting this and I notice that David's age at death in 1842 was stated as 71 and Catherine's age in 1851 census was 72 and at death in 1856 was 79.  Allowing for the fact that 1841 census ages are rounded to nearest 5, these ages are still a long way out.  Do such discrepancies seem likely, or have we got the wrong census entry?

In my opinion, I think you do have the right entry for them in 1841. Right occupation and wife for David Lyall.

The 1841 census is the most unreliable with ages often, in spite of the known rounding down of ages etc.
