Hello,
I am enquiring about my great-great-grandfather, Charles Salter. I don't know much about him. He married Mary Jane Moore in 1907, in Calne. By 1909, my great-grandfather was born in the hamlet of New Zealand. Charles was listed as a labourer. By Thomas Henry's 1937 wedding to Dorothy Scott, Charles is listed as William Charles, and there is no mention of him being dead. His wife died in 1950, in Calne. Can anyone help me?
Thanks,
Adam McGregor

Have you got a rough date of birth for him or found him on any censuses?
-
Sadly the family do not appear on the 1911 census. They were living in a hamlet, so there's a chance they were overlooked. Seeing as they married between that census and the 1901 census, I don't know his age. His wife was born in 1883, in Hilmarton.

Got him in 1901 - marriage gives his father as Thomas and date of birth about 1885

Was about to ask the same.
Well done Groom :)
-
Yes, I've seen that one. But I can find no Charles who died with a birth date of 1885.
-
Oh the marriage gives his father as Thomas?
-
He does appear on the 1911 with his wife & children in Calne
-
He does? I have never managed to locate such a record. Might I find it on Ancestry?

Yes, that's Uncle Vic. Him and my great-grandfather used to go to the pub together. I'll try the workhouse.
Trish,
I have investigated that line. Thanks.

Oh the marriage gives his father as Thomas?
The actual certificate can be seen on Ancestry.
-
Anc has them as SALLER in 1911 ::)
-
Thanks for all of this. So he was born in 1884. Just need to find a death certificate now.
-
Need to go and get my hair cut now, so I'll leave you to it.
-
OK, thanks for your help.
-
Have you found him or Mary J on the 1939 register :-\
-
Good idea. I'll search now.
-
Mary Jane is there, with an Albert Weston. Searching for Charles now.
-
Can't find any record of Charles.
-
Does it say whether Mary J is married or widowed
-
I can't see, as I don't have membership with findmypast.

Today I had an amazing breakthrough!
Firstly, my birth certificate for Charles came. Secondly, Ancestry did their free weekend thing. I found Charles King (with the same birth date) living in Worcestershire. However, his name had been corrected to King-Salter! He died as Charles K Salter in the same area in 1954, and I'm sending off for that certificate. He obviously adopted an alias as he had abandoned his wife (living alone in 1939 yet still listed as married) but someone at the NHS probably had changed it back.

Excellent result there :)

It is! I'm very pleased. That's that mystery solved anyway. With no doubt.
