Title: Spearpoint family of Kent
Post by: tonymaxfield on Saturday 05 August 17 10:12 BST (UK)
I have come across the Spearpoint family through my paternal grandmother. They seem extremely well documented and go back to 1500s. They appear to be mariners from Folkestone. Although the family tree is well established I am trying to find more details of their lives. Can anyone help?

I've got a couple of photos of Spearpoint graves, taken in the old cemetery, if they are of any use to you.

That would be fantastic, Betty. I have Alice 1851-1928, William 1825-1887, James 1786-1860, Baker 1750-, Thomas 1722-1779, Henry 1695-1730, Baker 1666-1720, Henry 1621-1672, Ingrome 1600- and George 1575-1609. That I think is the direct line. Alice was my great great grandmother, but I have loads of other great uncles/ aunts, etc.

What churches might they be?

This might answer your point, Rosie99 too. I have all the names and dates, but very little else.

Thanks both,

Tony

Both graves are in the Cheriton Road Cemetery (a.k.a. Folkestone Old Cemetery) Folkestone.

If they are your relatives & you would like better quality photos, send me a private message with your email address & I'll gladly send you copies.

I'm sure I've got at least one more Spearpoint grave, but I've a lot of photos as yet unlabelled, so bear with me until I find them ;D

There are bits and pieces to be gleaned from google books and the London Gazette and how about the British Newspaper archives (just sign up and get 3 free newspaper pages)?

https://www.thegazette.co.uk

There appears to have been a Mr T Spearpoint who was a Post Agent (this ran in the family for some time?
1897
At Folkestone County Court, on December 15, before Sir W. L. Selfe, Mr Charles Griffith, chemist and druggist, Canterbury, sued Mr. T. Spearpoint for 7/. 10s. for an upper and lower set of artificial teeth for Mrs. Spearpoint, and 1/. for four teeth supplied to his daughter.
(Conclusion, they needed teeth back then, lol?) https://books.google.co.nz/books?id=VKQhAQAAMAAJ&q=spearpoint+folkestone&dq=spearpoint+folkestone&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiz25W32LPYAhVEiLwKHZq0BqQQ6AEISzAH

This looks interesting:

The Nautical Magazine - Volume 63 - Page 667

1894
The Board of Trade have received through the Foreign Office a medal and diploma, together with a sum of money, for each of the undermentioned fishermen of Folkestone, which have been awarded to them by the Belgian Government in recognition of their services to the shipwrecked crew of the Belgian fishing-boat Les Deux Amis, which stranded near Folkestone on the 4th January last. The names of the fishermen are : — R. Weatherhead, W. Spearpoint, T. W. Penny, W. May ...

Also this
Births. 20th Febuary 1869, at Wood Street, Dover, the wife of Mr- Osborne Spearpoint of Her Majesty's Revenue Cutter Lion, of a son.

The name is pretty common around Folkestone, even an image search on the surname turns out interesting historical photographs/memorials

I guess you have all this http://www.airgale.com.au/spearpoint/d13.htm

There is even a Charles Ingram Spearpoint WW1 solidier in NZ, if you want the link to his WW1 file.

I may be able to help. All of the names of people that go aback historically are linked to my family. My mum is in fact a Spearpoint. My grandfather is Thomas Henry who was a fisherman in Folkestone, as was my great grandfather.

Hi Nats.34

Thanks for your answer. There seem to be hundreds of Spearpoints in Kent and Dover/ Folkestone. My point of entry is my great great grandmother Alice Spearpoint (1851-1928) daughter of William and Elizabeth Ann May. Alice married Frederick Barton, another family deeply rooted in the area. Are you related to this part of the family or do you have any info about them. Much appreciated.
