I have a transcription for a marriage at SS Peter & Paul's Church, Mansfield on April 11th 1853 between Thomas SPENCER and Dinah WASS. Short of obtaining the actual marriage certificate, are there any parish records which would indicate who their respective fathers were.
I believe that there was one son born the following year named Joseph, and that Thomas probably died prior to the census of 1861.
Many thanks
Alan

Hi Alan,
Nottingham archives will have the Church copy of the marriage on fiche which will be the same as the certificate so if you are able to wait I can get a copy for you when I'm next in the archives sometime over the next two weeks.

Many thanks NG. Yes I am happy to wait for the information.
Hi KG: For some reason I missed that 1861 census. Yes, that is the family concerned. That confirms for me the lineage of Dinah and that she was a widow when she married Thomas Spencer. It is still of interest to see who Thomas Spencer belonged to. My strong suspicion is that he was her dead husband's nephew.

I'm a bit confused.
Wasnt Dinahs 1st Husband Ralph Wass who she married 1833?
Dinah was nee Moaks.
1851 we have;
Dinah Wass, 38
E Wass, 11
W Wass, 9
M Wass, 5
R Wass, 1
1841 Census
Ralph Wass, 35
Dinah Wass, 25
Ann Wass, 7
Hannah Wass, 6
Eliza Wass, 4
Elizabeth Wass, 2
William Wass, 4 mths
So second Husband was born about same time as 1st Husband. Cant see a Spencer connection to Ralph?
AAaah;
1851 Census
South Normanton, Derbyshire
Thomas Spencer 45
Ann Spencer, 40, born South Normanton****
John Spencer, 20
Thomas Spencer, 14
Wm Spencer, 13
Ann Spencer, 2
Marriage;
9 Feb 1830, South Normanton, Derbyshire
Thomas SPENCER to Ann WASS
Witnesses Joseph Wass and Mary Smedley
(FreeREG)
An ANN Wass Christened 4 May 1810 South Normanton to WILLIAM/ANN

Hi Trish
That's my reasoning entirely.
I'm even intrigued by who she was living with in 1881 and 1891 (a deaf mute named John Ball Kyte). Dinah Died in 1895. In so much of this everyone is related to everyone else!! (or so it seems!!)

The Thomas Spencer who died in 1857 would be the Thomas in question's father - and the husband of Ann Wass

Lots of Wass's around :D
Small places in those days I would think.
Do you have Dinah her as the Daughter of William/Ann Moaks (Ann nee Robinson) who married 6 Feb 1809?

Quote;
The Thomas Spencer who died in 1857 would be the Thomas in question's father - and the husband of Ann Wass
Or Ann Spencer nee Wass died and Dinah married her Husbands Sisters Husband.
(thats a mouthful)
Only the Cert will tell so it will be interesting when Nottsgirl looks it up for you :)

1851 Census living with the Gasgoines we have;
Francis Ball Kyte, 45, Uncle, Widr
John Ball Kyte, 18
1871 Francis is under Frank Kyte and he died 1876
There is a John KYTE/Jane BALL Marriage 12 Aug 1805 South Normanton.
Possibly Francis's Parents.
Edmund GASKIN, not Gasgoine, married Mary BALL 1841

All the above!!
Gaskin / Gascoygne are interchangeable - several examples in the serial census returns. I'm putting a Moakes query on the Derby forum which could tie several Mo(a)kes to Gaskin / Gascoynges!

Hi NG
Apologies for the slow response. I have been attempting to unpick a number of other loose ends from this tangled skein at the same time.
