Title: 1870 approx date please Grandad Howes
Post by: lrashford on Monday 07 August 17 18:37 BST (UK)
Hello - I found this photo printed on what feels like tin in my late grandmother's estate. It's in an envelope with 'Grandad Howes 1870 approx'. I was wondering if anyone could date this for me? Also, would anyone be able to identify what is on this gentleman's lapel. I believe this could be 'Grandad Howes' but not sure.

Does anyone know the best way to store this to prevent further damage.

Not 1870's I'm afraid. Although unusual outside of the UK at this time this is a Tintype & probably 1920's.
You can see the shirt collars have bars or tabs & although these appeared around WW1 they gained in popularity in the 1920's & up to the introduction of collar stiffeners late decade.

Those bars and tabs are on the jackets, not the shirts - would it be the same idea though? To make them stiff?

Could it be a camera that the young lad is holding? He appears to have a leather strap over his shoulder on the same side as the "camera"?

Hi lrashford,

I think your man could be wearing a silver war badge - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_War_Badge

Hi Judy - thank you, hadn't thought of this one. Will see if any of the family recognise this medal :)

It looks very much like one, and it would fit in with the date  :)

Hey everyone! Thank you so much for all your help!
I facebooked the Amgueddfa Cymru and although they weren't able to help me they did suggest a lovely woman called Ceri Thompson. She suggested it could be the South Wales Borderers badge (the one with the sphinx in the centre). Not only are they similar it also ties in with the timeline.
Thank you for all your help, always exiciting when one gets a breakthrough on their ancestry.
