Title: Esther Hamilton burial Penrith
Post by: coyote99 on Tuesday 08 August 17 16:16 BST (UK)
Hi, could someone look up a burial for me please, Esther Hamilton buried St Andrew's Penrith 9 Sep 1837. I'm looking for age and perhaps whether the register mentions if she was the wife of Hugh Hamilton. The transcription on Family Search only gives name and burial date.
Thanks

Thanks Rosie for your reply, unfortunately not the person I was looking for, she would only have been in her 30s.

Where did you last have her living.  Is Hugh still around for the 1841 census

Hugh & Esther's daughters, Margaret (my 2nd great grandmother) and Rebecca,  were baptised at St Mary's Carlisle on the 12 Feb 1832. Hugh is on the 1841 census living at Wigton not with Esther but Mary. Margaret & Rebecca are also on the census as are 2 other children, Jane & Elizabeth. I don't think these other 2 girls are Hugh's daughters but probably Mary's from a previous marriage as they were born in Belfast Ireland.
Esther must have died between 1832-1841, as there is only one Esther Hamilton in the death indexes which I now know to be the wrong one, she must have died before registration began and would either be in Carlisle or Wigton. Hugh died in Apr 1842 just a month after the birth of his son William. I can find no trace of a marriage between Hugh & Mary.

Is Mary who married Robert Smith another daughter?
It would seem that if Esther died it would be between 1832 and early 1841.  I can have a look in the church registers for you, and see if I can find anything but it would be the end of the week or next week?

Yes Mary is another daughter of Hugh & Esther, baptised 24 Sep 1824 at St Cuthbert Carlisle. That would be great if you could have a look in the registers for me.
Many thanks

Hi
I checked the records for the 3 closest churches to the family in Carlisle. St Mary's, St Cuthberts's and Holy Trinity.  I couldn't find a burial for Esther.  The records for Holy Trinity are virtually unreadable from late 1839 to 1841.  I also checked the records for StMary's in Wigton and couldn't see anything for Esther.  The burial record for Hugh was there in St. Mary's  Wigton records.  He was buried on 5th April 1842 and aged 42.
When the twins? We're baptised the family we're living in Willow Holme.
When Mary was married she was living in Caldewgate, same area as Willow Holme.  The entry didn't say that Hugh was deceased.
I took copies of the marriage entry, the double baptism and burial entry for Hugh if you want a copy.
Sorry no better information for you.  Esther appears to be a fairly uncommon name in the area, only a handful of burials in the churches I checked.

There seems to have been a glut of HAMILTON burials at Wigton in 1842, perhaps some are relevant-

Henry HAMILTON of Wigton ; bur 22-Oct 1842 ; an infant

Hugh HAMILTON of Wigton ; bur 5-Apr 1842 ; aged 42

Mary HAMILTON of Wigton ; bur 9-Jul 1842 ; age not given (GRO search says aged 55)

William HAMILTON of Wigton ; bur 3-Jul 1842 ; age not given (GRO says aged 60)

Hi Gam Yam thanks for looking for Esther, I've no idea what happened to her, she just seems to disappear. I have a copy of the baptism register for Margaret and Rebecca and also Hugh's burial.
Many thanks for trying.

Hi Geoff-E, Hugh Hamilton buried 1842 is my 3 x great grandfather, I've no idea who the others are or whether or not they're related.
Thanks for looking though.
