I have recently come back to my family history research. I do not think I have posted about this brickwall before but if I have i apologise.
I am still having trouble with locating what happened to my Great grandfathers first wife, Emma.
She was born Emma Barwell c 1838 in Essex. She married my g-grandfather Thomas Ashton in the 1850s and they had several children.
The problem I have come up against is the fact that my g grandfather married again in 1873 to my g-grandmother Catherine Benson, a widow. I cannot trace any record of either a re marriage or a death for Emma Ashton. I was wondering if anyone could give me any idea of where i could look to try to solve this mystery.

There is a marriage for a Thomas Ashton to an Emma Barwell Dec 1855 St Giles vol 1b p 504
However I cannot see a death for Emma before 1873

From the 1873 marriage certificate, does he claim he is widowed?

Hi Emeltom and Chempat
Thanks for the replies. That is my g-grandfather's marriage to Emma in London.
And yes on the 1873 marriage to Catherine Benson he stated that he was widowed but up to now I can find no death record for Emma.

You probably know all this, but - to help others looking - the family (including Emma) was in Birmingham by the time of the 1871 census. The last Ashton child with mmn Barwell appears to have been Alice, birth reg Dec qtr 1870 Birmingham (6 months old in the 1871 census).
The marriage of Thomas Ashton & Catherine Benson took place on 24 August 1873 in Aston.

Hi AVM228
I was aware of those details but thank you for the reply. As you say it is always good to have information for others that may be researching Emma's life.

Emma was born in Essex, married in London, and last seen in Birmingham.
Have you just looked for deaths in Birmingham, or considered more around the country. Have you also considered that the age might be wrongly recorded?

Hi Chempat
Thanks for the reply.
I have tried to look further afield for Emma's death but I cant really see anywhere that she would have connections
