Hi,
I'm looking for any information on my ancestor Catherine Black.
She was married to Alexander Ross and they had three children that I know of who were born in Glasgow. They were Isabella born in 1779, John (not sure when) and Colin who was born in 1792 and married Julianne Smith, who was born June 1814 in Campbletown.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I cannae see a marriage for Colin & Julian but this is in the IGI.

Do you think there's a chance it's the same family who moved around and the duplicate of names is because the first child born who was given that name died?
I know Mary Ann Ross married Daniel Ferguson who was a painter and they lived in Greenock, where future generations also lived.

It's very possible it's the same family but there's no way of telling without some info. Even if it is the same family it's no helping much without a marriage for Alex & Catherine.
I have a copy of the pre-1855 MI's for Renfrewshire but there's nothing standing out for Ross & Black in Greenock.

The only thing I have regarding Greenock is the pre-1855 MI's for Renfrewshire.
Is that any good ?

Not sure really, but I have Robert Ferguson born Greenock 1854,who's father Robert Ferguson was married to Mary Wilson, but not sure when.
Robert was born in 1829 and his father, Robert was married to Elizabeth McCallum, but not sure when either?
Any dates you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure if the last information is my family, but the Christian names are all very familiar, maybe I would have to see the census for the families to cross reference.

Joan Ferguson is living at 55 Piccadilly street in Barony in 1851 as head of family with Alex, Catherine, Hugh and Joan. Catherine is a french polisher, Hugh is a cabinet maker and Alex is a painter journeyman.
Colin Ross is a painter journey man living at 7 Piccadilly street, Barony in 1851.
Is this too much of a coincidence? Or were there migrations of families between Greenock and Barony who had painters amongst them?

Joan Ross Ferguson died in 1878 aged 73.
She was the widow of Robert Ferguson, contractor.
Her parents were John Ross & Catherine Campbell.
I don't think she is related to Colin Ross (but I could be wrong).

Colin and Mary Ann's parents were Colin and Julianne Smith.
Colin's parents were Alexander and Catherine Black, so the Alexander pops up again, although I know it was a popular name...

The Robert Ferguson who died in 1866 is definitely a relative, but not too sure about the others!! I suppose there is a good chance though
