Hello,
I'm looking for my 2nd great grandfather, Francis John Clarke, in the 1881 census and having particular issues finding him.
Francis John Clarke, B. 1876. Doddiscombsleigh, Devon. Died 1951
I have the birth and death certificate for Francis, he never appeared to marry my 2nd great grandmother...
Birth certificate shows Father, John Clarke and mother Susan Cox.
They appear to have had a number of children -
William Thomas Clarke
Laura Mary Clarke
Frances M Clarke - 1877 -
Caroline Emma Clarke
Reginald Clarke
Ethel Clarke
Annie Clarke
Lilian Clarke
I've found them in the 1881 census with Frances M shown residing. However, no Francis John....
I've also found a death certificate (although not ordered yet...) for Frances M. He (yes, you read that right. He) died in 1954.
Could someone take a look for me, I've been trying for a few weeks and I can't see the Clarkes for Clarks....
Thanks,
Richard

I have checked all the births on GRO for this family and I am of the opinion that the "M" is an error and that it is your Francis John.

I have done the same as Jamjar and I also think the census entry is wrong.
Which death record are you considering getting :-\

Where do you have him on census with your grandmother :-\

Maybe (for 1891) ? ?
19 Lucins Str, Tormoham
H/H of Emily Watton, greengrocer and family
Frank Clarke 16 Errand boy bn Christow
(Christow is where several of the siblings were born, who were with mum on 1891, though I didn't type them all in) And it is where the family were living in 1881, when Francis J was little.

Reginald with sister Laura on the 1901:

Rosie99,
Funnily enough, I don't have him on any census records with my x2 Great Grandmother! They never married, it appears that she was already married with children.
She was Jessie Lavers. Born 1866 in Plymouth, England. I have found my Great Grandfather and his siblings with Jessie in 1911. Francis John wasn't with them....
I do however have him listed as father for all three children. I don't have access to the 1939 register, otherwise i'd take a look
Back to Francis, in 1911 he was shown as lodging in 'Royal Sailors Rest Home, Fore Street, Devonport'. Interestingly, he's shown as 'single'.
No sign of him in 1901. I have found a Royal Navy service record for him. It shows him serving for six months in 1895. He was 'invalidated' but no reason why...
*Edit - Just seen the two replies... That looks likely. Not easy with a common name like Francis Clarke! *
