Title: Date of rural photograph with sitters? possibly Canevali, Liverpool area
Post by: bluesofa on Thursday 17 August 17 23:49 BST (UK)
Any help dating this photograph would be very much appreciated.

There have been two suggestions to the identity of the sitter at the reins of the horse drawn mower, though neither appear to have rural connections

John Canevali (1837-1889)
Census 1841 Liverpool, Lancashire HO107-561-17-13-19
Census 1851 Toxteth Park HO107-2186-83-2, Steward in ship
Census 1871 Liverpool, Lancashire RG10-3760-20-33, Publican
Census 1881 Liverpool, Lancashire RG11-3615-44-43, Earthenware Dealer
Probate Canevali John 1889 Liverpool TNA Ref IR27-487

John Howett Canevali (1876-1943)
Census 1881 Lancashire Liverpool RG11-3615-44-43
Census 1891 Liverpool, Lancashire RG12-2910-19-2
Census 1901 Liscard, Cheshire RG13-3403-139-37, Commercial Book Keeper
Census 1911 Wallasey, Cheshire RG14-22059-39, China & Earthenware Merchant
BT Phone Book, 1924, 1928 Canevali J. H.; Wallasey; High Class Confectnr
John Howett was also a keen amateur photographer

Many thanks

My first instinct would be to say the latter time period.  Looks more "modern" to be the first chap.

The sitter holding the reins of the horse seems to be dressed more like a Commercial Book Keeper than an agricultural worker. Wearing a tie and shirt sleeve garters. Wonder if he is just posing for the photo? The other gentlemen look like farm workers.

My guess is late 1920s or later. Cheers, Peter.

I would agree with late 1920s maybe into the 1930s.

Many thanks for all the replies.  It is great to be able to use the wisdom of the crowd. The general opinion does appear to be that the photo was taken in the  early part of the 20th century.  I wonder if there are any specific observations that can be used to support this view?  Many thanks again for all your help.

The chap with the sleeve garters is wearing a collar bar. First appeared in WW1 with RFC/RAF Officers & caught on in the 20's but faded in popularity when Brook Bros. introduced the collar stiffener in the late 20's.
So if this was early 20's & you think the chap on the reins looks early-mid 40's it could be someone born 1876.
