Title: MARCHINGTON at Chapel en le Frith
Post by: sbunter on Saturday 26 August 17 00:54 BST (UK)
It seems that nowhere has the burials for Chapel en le Frith online?
Also Wills indexes for the period 1780-1858?
I am trying to sort of a tangled knot of Marchington's.
In particular the parentage of John Marchington born Chapel en le Frith c1802 who married Hannah Hallam.
There are lot's of theories around, but I am not yet convinced.
Would anyone be able to help with wills in the time period 1780-1858 and/or burials 1780-1841?
Thanks,
Sharon

I don't think that many Parish Records from Derbyshire are online?

You could get what you want direct from Derbyshire Record Office:

I was just wondering if there were any publications that anyone had that might help.
I think some films are online at the LDS if you go to their research center.
I am in Australia :)
thanks,
Sharon

Family Search has two christenings for a John Marchington around the relevant time period

First  1 November 1801, father John
Second 23 January 1803 parents John & Betty

Could be same family if first John died, could be two different families

Batch number for christening is C04851-4 -- you can browse all christenings -- and if you play around with batch numbers ( eg replacing C with M for marriages and/ trying adjacent numbers) you can get many more records

There is also a burial listed

John Marchington aged 67 (bn 1802) on 29 June 1869 but no batch number given -- so you will have to play around with the batch number I gave above to try to find the relevant burials

MARRIAGE;
5 Oct 1800, St Thomas-a-Becket, Chapel-en-le-Frith
Johnn MARCHINGTON, Bachelor, Farmer
Betty POTT, Spinster
By Licence
(FreeREG)

Interestingly there is this Marriage same Church;
28 Dec 1813
John MARCHINTON, Widower, Farmer to Betty MARCHINGTON, Widow
(FreeREG)

In case you dont have the 1841 Census
John Marchentan, 35, Farmer
Hanah Marchentan, 40
John Marchentan, 12
Ann Marchentan, 11
Joseph Marchentan, 9
Samuel Marchentan, 8
Thomas Marchentan, 7
Elizabeth Marchentan, 5
Martha Marchentan, 4
Philip Marchentan, 3
William Marchentan. 9 mths
Joseh Holme, 15

Nearby is a Rachel Marchenton age 84, Independant
This is liklely Rachel KINDER who married Thomas Marchington 11 Feb 1779
(FreeREG)

Earlier Marriages on FreeREG have the surname as Marchinton/Marchenton etc

No Baptism/Burials on FreeREG though. but as new records are being added all the time worth keeping an eye on the site.

Trish :)

Anc has a PHILIP Marchington Bapt to posted 17 July 1814 to John/Betty

Likely married Mary Ann GREEN 28 June 1836 (FreeREG)

1851 Census we have;
Philip Marchington, 36, Innkeeper
Mary Marchington, 35
Elizabeth Marchington, 12
Samuel Marchington, 10
Ellen Marchington, 4

Next Door we have;
Elizabeth Marchington, 78, Retired Farmer Widow (1773)
Joseph Marchington, 46, Son, Unm,  Ag Lab (1805)

Now is this Elizabeth nee POTT or the Widow who married John M 1813?

She may have a Will that shed light on this.

1841 Census
Joseph Marchington, 30, Farmer
Elizabeth Marchington, 65

Their headstone inscription in the burial ground at St Thomas:

In remembrance of
JOHN MARCHINGTON
of HALLSTEADS
who died June 26th 1869
aged 67 years
also HANNAH his wife
who died Dec 23rd 1874
aged 74 years
Un-numbered years of bliss
I to my sheep will give
and while my throne unshaken stands
shall all My chosen live.

Transcribed by Marguerite Bellhouse, Jayne Mellor, Anne McCulloch & Jim & Jill Dunn, collated and published by Beryl & Guy Martin

There are abstracts of the following wills/administrations: Thomas MARCHINGTON (proved 1781), Thomas MARCHINGTON (proved 1833) Henry MARCHINGTON (proved 1858) at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dusk/chapelwills.html#m1

These have tantalising information but I don't think clinch the ancestry of the John who married Hannah.

I am interested in this couple and their ancestry, so if you find out more, please let me know.

Hi,
I have started a Marchington tree at Ancestry and do believe that John who married Hannah is the son of John and Betty Potts. That John being the son of Joseph & Amy Goodwin, and that Joseph being the son of John. I have been way for a while (my Mum died) but will get back into it, but I am fairly sure on my logic. I was hoping to confirm with the deaths/burials as requested in the post,
cheers,
Sharon

Hi Sharon -please tell why you are inclined to the above parentage of John MARCHINGTON b abt 1802, married to Hannah HALLAM -I suspect you are correct but I haven't found clues.
