John Tosney, aged 26 yrs, carter, 3c Kitchen Street [Liverpool], son of Timothy Tosney, labourer, and Alice Kean, 21 yrs, 8c Fisher Street, Toxteth Park, marry on 12 Feb 1884 in the RC St Vincent de Paul Church in Liverpool, according to the marriage certificate.
I seem to be unable to find the birth of John Tosney around 1858. I do find the married couple in the 1891 and 1901 census, living in Toxteth Park first, and Liverpool later. In both censuses, his place of birth is given as Liverpool, and his date of birth 1859 and 1861.
His father Timothy Tosney is a mystery as well.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I wonder if the name has changed spelling over the years.
There are criminal register entries for both a Timothy and a John Tosney.

I know this isn't answering your question -- but just in case it's the same Timothy -- a Timothy Tosney was convicted in Liverpool on 30/12/1878 - to 2 months imprisonment for grevious bodily harm. The interesting thing is -- he is shown as a sailor and aged 49.
I haven't looked yet for a birth for John -- but if this is the correct Timothy it does give an age for him -- and there is a possibility that John was born at sea I suppose.

There's a Timothy Tosny, b1829 Ireland, on the 1851 census:

There's a Catholic baptism in Liverpool for a Joannes Tosney father Timothei
mother Maria Kerrigan in 1853 - could be a sibling.

Michael Tosney MMN Kerrigan registered Sep 1860 Liverpool
and a Patrick in Mar 1856 so John could have been squeezed in between if this is the right family.
Um John Tosney Jun 1853

Could the Joannes, found by Millipede, be the John I am looking for? If the Maria Kerrigan found by garstonite is his mother (and the age on the grave is correct), she would have been 17 when he was born. Possible. No marriage found of Maria Kerrigan and Timothy Tosney, though.
Thanks for all the help!

There is a Timothy 'Tossney' born abt 1824 who died in 1886 in Liverpool on the Civil Registration Index.
According to Liverpool Burials he died in the Workhouse and was buried in Walton Park Cemetery.
In 1851 there is a 22 year old Timothy 'Tossey' - aged 22 (hence born abt 1829) -- a Dock Labourer, living with parents John and Bridget 'Tossey' and a brother John (and some Lodgers) -- all living in Liverpool but born Ireland.
In my experience of the ages of Irish people (and I am allowed to say this because my husband is Irish as was my paternal grandmother!!) - their ages can vary from record to record. It can be a real pain.
Looking in Ireland for Tosneys --- it seems that there are not that many -- there are far more Torsneys and Tarsneys. I don't know if this might prove to be relevant if the surname has 'morphed' into Tosney.
