Title: Deaths in WESTON in December 1778 and Early January 1779?
Post by: windy_miller on Tuesday 29 August 17 21:27 BST (UK)
Hi,

My records show a miller and his man were killed in WESTON in December 1778 or early 1779.  The death was reported in the Ipswich Journal on Jan 8th.

I'm looking for the men's names so can anyone furnish me with the names of fellows who died between 1st December 1778 and 8th of January in the parish of WESTON?

I can then try to whittle them down to the actual casualties.

Many thanks,
Windy

Hi, Are we talking about Market Weston or Weston near Beccles?

If it's market weston then there is only one burial in that time frame in the NBI.

Edward Staffe. Burial date 25 Dec 1778. Weston Market Parish.

Also I'm pretty sure that they died on 8th of Jan 1779.  Not sure is they had inquests at this time, but if they did they may have been buried a day or two after they died?

BURY 8th Jan. (1779)

LAST THURSDAY EVENING the storm began here with thunder, lightening and hail, which continued all night with much snow; on Friday morning two barns and many chimneys were blown down; few houses escaped, little or much. in Lord Bristol's park about 100 fine large oaks were torn up by the roots. but happily we didn't hear of any lives being lost near this town. At WELTON near STANTON ? a miller and his man were endevouring to keep the mill against the wind, were killed by the mill falling on them through the violence of the storm

8th January 1779 was a Friday.

January 9th 1779  Ipswich Journal.

At Weston near Stanton in Suffolk a miller and his man were trying to keep the mill against the wind were killed by the mill falling on them through the violence of the storm.

So it looks like the Market Weston near Stanton.

fellows who died between 1st December 1778 and 8th of January in the parish of WESTON?

We can't really look up where people died, only where they are buried.
I don't think you can assume that both of these chaps would be buried in Market Weston, you may have to look in neighbouring parishes as well.

Thanks everyone,

That establishes that they died at Market Weston rather than Weston, and I'll bear in mind that they may have been buried outside of the parish, but the first place to look would be MW?

At that time I would have thought that they would have been buried within the parish, I think St. Mary.  Have you got any names in mind that would help the search?

Its a bit of a stretch, but the Flatmans were milling here from about 1800 to about 1850.  The business was lucrative and was often passed down the generations.  A long shot but that would be my first guess.

Not sure how complete the NBI records are but there are no burials showing up in January 1779 at MW.

The first burial is in February of a John Blomfield

Thanks for that.

The Blomfields were miller too, but not in this area.  Maybe I'll need to pop over to Bury Record Office and check out the burial books.
