Title: MURDOCH John
Post by: Jaznjjj on Saturday 09 September 17 04:46 BST (UK)
John MURDOCH had a child in New South Wales with Emma JAMES in 1876 - the comment regarding him and Emma included the words ".... now in New Zealand who refused to help her".  I have not checked any records at this time and I'd appreciate some direction here please as I don't know my way around NZ records.  It may be useful to anyone connected with John in NZ to know that a number of descendants of Emma and John have done DNA testing in NSW and those results might be helpful to any descendants of John in NZ.  Regards, J.

Hello Jaznjjj,

Can you give us an idea as to when the statement of "now in New Zealand" was made?

Do you have a year and place of birth for John?

The child was born in February 1876.  The reference to John Murdoch was in January, 1877 when the mother of the child was applying to have the child put into the Foundling Hospital at Ashfield, NSW.  The Foundling Hospital made the comment on that date referring to John Murdoch is the alleged father.   That is the only information I have about John Murdoch.  A search of NSW Birth Deaths and Marriages brought up many individuals by that name.  While the mother of the child was born in 1851 John Murdoch could have been any one of many born over a span of 30 or 40 years.  He may, of course, been born elsewhere.  On my list of things to explore with this is departure and arrivals NSW to and from NZ.  I will also be on the lookout for DNA matches in NZ.

The good news for the child is that the Foundling Hospital agreed to take the child until the mother was in a settled situation, at which time mother and child were reunited.

This exploration is in its very early days.   Thanks, J.
