Robert Winterbottom LEES was born 1855 D in Oldham, Lanc., as son of William LEES and his (second) wife Amelia Winterbottom. I find him in the 1861 census of Oldham (RG09 3009 89 50) as Rod LEES. After that, I do not see him in the census. What happened?

Hi
Is he with his family ? William Amelia, and siblings Mary Ann, Violet, Elizabeth and Eli ?
If so, I think you will find that 'Rod' is actually ASA Lees who was baptised to the couple on 7 Oct 1855 Oldham. I can't see Robert at all.

Are you sure of his parentage? A Robert Winterbottom LEES was baptised at St Mary's Oldham 19 Dec 1855 son of Daniel and Mary Ann LEES and there are lots of records for him.

It's a bit strange because I can see a Robert Winterbottom Lees born and baptised in Dec. 1855 to a Daniel Lees and his wife Mary Ann, yet his wife as far as I can see wasn't a Winterbottom.

Robert Winterbottom Lees age 21 married 4 December 1876 to Mary Ann Robinson. His father was Daniel

Thank you for your help.
If Rod and Asa are the same person, then that explains why I did not find Asa in the 1861 census (although he was born in 1855) and Rod/Robert not in the 1871 census. I jumped to the conclusion that Robert Winterbottom fitted well because William Lees' second wife was a Winterbottom.
Your explanation has convinced me I was wrong. Thanks again!

Have you got the marriage certificate? If not, it is available on Familysearch

Hi Heather,
I did not know that marriage certificates are on FamilySearch. Saves me paying UKL 9,25 for the GRO-copies! Thank you.

Not all certificates are on familysearch but it is always worthwhile checking.

Hi, Robert Winterbottom Lees is one of my direct ancestors. Let me know if you are still struggling with him.
