Title: Help find Nimrod Gardeners marriage please .
Post by: brigidmac on Friday 15 September 17 06:19 BST (UK)
I have looked unsuccessfully on Ancestry .freebmd and even Scotland's people
But can't find a marriage record for Nimrod Gardner B.1827 in Bugbrook Northamptonshire
and Mary b.abt 1830 Scotland

They are living in Helsby with a 6 month baby in 1851. He is an agricultural labourer

They have several children in Helsby then move to Birkenhead where they have more children

Nimrod becomes a plate layer and  they are on all censuses in  Birkenhead  til their deaths 1910

There is a Nimrod Gardner in 1841 as a cordwinder in Northamptonshire but i.m not sure it is the right man.his father and siblings  are still in Bugbrook at that time .

I would like to know Mary.s maiden name ...I wonder what made her travel from Scotland

I can't believe they didn't get married with so many children ...help finding this marriage will be appreciated.

The 1881 census shows Mary as being from Moffat Scotland
None of the other censuses give a district

Looking at their daughter Caroline's birth in 1859 in Helsby, Cheshire on the GRO Birth Index her mother's maiden name is listed as Brown

Caroline Gardner  March Qtr 1859 RUNCORN  Volume 08A  Page 205

Kay

Added - Eldest daughter Sarah Gardner  also listed with mmn Brown
Sept Quarter 1850 RUNCORN UNION  Volume 19  Page 236

Thanks Kay .

.I must learn how to do that type of search

The name Brown won't help  much in searching for her parents....let's hope for another breakthrough

Meanwhile I found a Mary Gardner aged 19 in 1846 in criminal court in Cheshire
6 months prison for receiving stolen goods .....  Hope that's not her

The GRO Birth Index is a wonderful resource .     Sadly with a name like Nimrod any marriage he did make should be easily found so maybe be the couple just didn't marry  :-\

The 1881 census shows Mary as being from Moffat Scotland
None of the other censuses give a district

Mofffat is just over 3 miles south of Kirkpatrick Juxta
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/DFS/

Possible

Mary Brown baptised 01 Aug 1830. Kirkpatrick Juxta, Dumfries, Scotland.

parents named as George BROWN and Sarah CRAIG

What about naming patterns of NIMROD & MARY's children
Nimrod's parents JAMES & CHARLOTTE and N&M  first child named SARAH

Is this the complete list of N&M's children?

SARAH - could have been named after Mary's mother  :-\
CHARLOTTE - named after Nimrod's mother
NIMROD - named after parent
Sarah Ann
John
Caroline
GEORGE - could have been named after Mary's father  :-\
MARY - named after parent
Richard
William
JAMES - named after Nimrod's father
Jane

Like everyone else I can't find a marriage either for a Nimrod GARD(E)NER (tried variations of surname) to Mary BROWN  ??? There is one on FreeBMD in 1842 Daventry for Nimrod GARDNER,
3 other females but sadly no Mary and there doesn't appear to be a missing female name  :-\
Tried familysearch, Cheshire OPC, Cheshire BMD too  ???

Have you found Mary on the 1841 census?

I see they were living in Birkenhead district 1901

Nimrod's death

Nimrod GARDNER age 83 (1827)
Mar 1910 Birkenhead   8a 314

Is this Mary's death? If so, she has a middlename

Mary Amelia Gardner age 78 (c1830)
Dec 1908 Birkenhead 8a 306

Thanks so much everyone
You'd be surprised how many Nimrod Gardener.s there were

So yes I have seen his father James marriage to Charlotte Malsmbury with his father Nimrod as a labourer

our Nimrod was named after his grandfather and had at least one cousin and two nephews called Nimrod
his own son Nimrod died young .

But his own marriage is proving  very hard to find

Thanks so much everyone

Yes those Mary Browns are all feasible ...I wonder how many possibilities there are
I havent looked for Mary in 1841 as I didn't have a surname ...will do that now

He appears on search of James Gardner's marriage to Charlotte Malsmbury
Our Nimrod has at least one cousin and a nephew with same name and his 3 rd son who died young  was named after himself .

I think of that as the Scottish naming system so second son s name may well be a clue to the Scottish grandfather.s name

Mary doesn't have a middle name in any of the censuses
her death should be  between 1901 and 1911
And I would expect it to be in. Birkenhead

Mary Brown baptised 01 Aug 1830. Kirkpatrick Juxta, Dumfries, Scotland.
parents George Brown & Sarah Craig

Yes those Mary Browns are all feasible ...I wonder how many possibilities there are

I havent looked for Mary in 1841 as I didn't have a surname ...will do that now

There are these 1841c entries

Parish:  Moffat
County:Dumfriesshire
West Church Street
Sarah CRAIG   40
Mary BROWN   10
George MARCHBANK   43

Mary BROWN Age: 12 Dumfriesshire, Scotland
Civil Parish:   Kirkpatrick Juxta
County:   Dumfriesshire
Address:   Coats Yet
Occupation:   Ag Lab
Parish Number:   838
No other persons surname Brown
Head Nathaniel MURRAY

Just had a thought, Kirkpatrick Juxta is not that far from Gretna Green could Nimrod and Mary have married there?

I think Gretna records are An****ry but I have'nt got subscription.

I couldn't find a marriage in Gretna Green for them

If the marriage took place I would assume we are looking after 1841 census when Nimrod was in Northampton and the birth of their dau Sarah born 1850 Frodsham in Cheshire (Sept qtr.)

Lots of Mary Brown's marrying 1846 - 1851 Cheshire BMD but no one named Nimrod  ???

I could only find the Sept. 1842 marriage entry in Daventry (Northamptonshire) between 1841-1850  ???
Nimrod Gardner
To either
Hannah Dobbs
Ann Hollis
Letitia Waite
Other males
William Reynold
William Walton

Nimrod age 20 cordwainer on his own in 1841 living Rushton Northampton
might be worth looking to see if there’s a Mary Brown anywhere close by

then by 1851 he’s with his wife Mary born c 1830 Scotland (pob Moffat 1881) and child
Sarah 6mths born Frodsham Cheshire c1850 living registration district of Runcorn

Was Mary living in Scotland, Northampton or Cheshire 1841?
There is a Mary Brown age 12 living in Runcorn but her pob is indicated by ‘Y’ she is with
Samuel Brown & Margaret? and 5 older siblings

Maybe he had a first wife ...

There are quite a few mary.Brown  born in Scotland in various places  in England in 1941

I liked the pupil in Birkenhead school ..not of this parish

Or the one living with a 60 year old washerwoman  * Ann Parry who could be a grandmother
* at Christleton Cheshire

And there was one with her family . Father Andrew Brown ..mother .and 6'siblings in Northumberland

I've put the first few in my shoebox facility on ancestry so I can look again
As you can see I can't carry too many names and places in my head  .

Ladyhawke I'm sorry I don't think I answered your question about the children's names

The first Sarah died young so Sarah Ann may have been named after her or nimrods own sister who died young

possibility that Mary.s mother's name was    Sarah  or Caroline

Mary Brown mother  could be a Sarah  or Caroline Parry if the washerwoman inn1841 was her grandmother

And yes your list of 11 children  was correct though I think there may have been an earlier James who died in infancy
Nimrod named after himself and his grandfather James after his father so ....

Names for Mary's father ( if she had one ) could be John. George .or Richard

Thanks for attempt ing this challenge

I didn't answer the question about Getna Greene either
I tried looking at Scottish records..no luck

If Nimrod is mistranscribed as William there are hundreds of possibilities !

I found one in1951  Gloucester with the right birth years for a Mary Smith and William Gardner got interested before I realised how many more there were .

I.ll keep in mind the name Sarah Crieg and Mary Brown from your Dumfries records just in case the name crops up again .

Ps you mentioned a marriage of Nimrod with a possible name of Ann Hollis that may be worth looking into as the Samuel Hollis /Hallis family adopted my grandma nimrod.s granddaughter in 1900
and was a similar age to Nimrod and lived nearby in Birkenhead

I'm not sure that all the records of pre-registration Scottish marriages have survived - my gg grandfather was married about 1848 - 1849-ish, and we've never found his marriage despite years of searching for it.   :(

He was from Cramlington in Northumberland, and she was living in Berwick having been brought up in Eyemouth. Family tradition has it they were married in Eyemouth, but there's no sign of them in the parish registers, or in the United Secession church. Or anywhere else!

I  concluded that they were unlikely to have married in Scotland

I kept the 3 most likely 1841 on Mary Brown s profile on my Ancestry file

Prawn cocktail I often find more than 1 married record because they have the banns too in England

I think it likely that the Kirkpatrick Juxta birth to George Brown and Sarah Craig matches with the 1841 Moffat census entry that Ladyhawk found. It was not unusual ( certainly in Scotland) in the 1841 census for married women/ widows to be listed under their maiden name.

I still haven't made it to Bugbrooke
DNA  links me to someone with Gardener ancestors in  Bugbrooke

We are 5th cousins and link back directly to Nimrod.s parents James Gardner and Charlotte Malmesbury

She.s descended from one of Nimrod s siblings
It's great that the DNA and paper trail is so correct .

There is also a link on there to newspaper articles about this family from Bugbrooke to Birkenhead  wiitness to crime . A child criminal + a tragedy

I looked again at this thread and realized I did not know where Bugbrooke was. Not good. Here it is.

Bugbrooke is a large village and civil parish in Northamptonshire, England, on a ridge overlooking the valley of the River Nene.

Update ;
Re ladyhawk s reply 7

There is a possibility that Mary's middle name was Amelia as I've now found another of her granddaughters was Mary Amelia Chesney

Whose great grandaughter is a DNA match to us .
