Hello
According to the 1871 England Census (RG10/4208/138, p.11) Thomas HORNBY has married Alice, aged 24, but the only reference I can find to a marriage is in the Free BDM Index for the 4th quarter of 1864 name Alice SINGLETON. His parents, incidentally, were John and Mary HORNBY living in 1861 at 15 Back Timber Street(?), Preston.
Sadly I can find no confirmation of that marriage elsewhere or indeed any other Alice.
Can someone help please.
Thank you,
BAC3

The 1871 England Census has a son, John, aged 6........are you hopefully confirming that the mother was indeed Alice SINGLETON ::)

Lost my WiFi connection!
I will do this slowly so that you don't roll your eyes at me again ;D
I looked at the 1871 and found the name and age of the (presumed) first child John.
Then I looked at FreeBMD and found a likely birth for him.
Then I looked at the new GRO Index which gives the MMN which was Singleton.
This 1865 birth fits with the 1864 Hornby/Singleton marriage that you found.
I have now looked up the other child and MMN is again Singleton.
Name: Mother's Maiden Surname:
GRO Reference: 1867 J Quarter in PRESTON Volume 08E Page 556
HORNBY, MARY JANE SINGLETON
As you can't find any other Hornby/Singleton marriage and the names/ages/MMN of children 'fit' I personally would accept that it is right (if it was my family!).
The only way to be certain would be to buy a Birth Cert or look for a baptism to confirm the Mother's Christian name is Alice.

Giggsy,
Thank you for that analysis which on a balance of probabilities confirms my understanding.
I am very grateful with a very delicate :) and mental note to subscribe to the new GRO Index.
Take care,

Back again......... ;D
For some unknown reason Mr. Hornby goes missing after the 1881 England Census, except there is every possibility he died in December 1924. Can anyone help with 1891, 1901, 1911 please?
I have searched high and low and feel somewhat embarrassed :-[ :-[
Thank you,

If they are the family in Jemmett Street in 1901, it looks līke Thomas dies before 1911
-
There is a possible death in 1904 for a Thomas Hornby aged 64 North Preston
-
Good Morning Heather,
Thank you for all the hard work.
Sadly, this not the correct person.....I had reviewed him earlier......but he was born in Elswick and not Chorley, a fair distance apart, and the children are slightly different too. A pity. C'est la vie de la genealogie!!
Take care,
Tony

From GRO
Hornby children with mother's maiden name given as Singleton
1865 John registered Preston
1867 Mary Jane registered Preston
1871 William registered Preston
1874 James registered Preston
1877 Catherine registered Preston
1867 Thomas registered Fylde
1869 Joseph registered Fylde
The last 2 could be from the marriage of Joseph and Isabella in 1866
The Hornby family seemed to know the Singleton family very well judging by the number of marriages between them ;D
Heather

Heather,
These are the same children that appear in the 1881 Census, although Joseph has become James!! I shall now chase their appearances , if any, on 1891 et seq. Census just in case there may be a lead.
I had thought they could have emigrated, the USA and Canada being very convenient from Liverpool, but no mention.
For now,
Tony

Evening Heather,
When I first reviewed the 1891 Census my immediate thought was that the parents had died.
But Mary Jane's wedding threw that idea away as the marriage entry shows Thomas HORNBY presumably alive, that is, there is no "Deceased" qualification.
In the circumstances I can assume only the parents were alive in 1891 and that leaves 1901 and 1911, although there is a possibility, as you mentioned earlier, that Thomas HORNBY died in 1904 (age slightly out?)
For the moment,
Tony

John Hornby's marriage in 1893 notes father as Thomas, labourer. His wife's father is noted as deceased, but not so Thomas
-
Good spot......both children, Mary Jane and John, when they married were living in Haydock Street. Fairly conclusive Thomas HORNBY still alive as certainly no "Deceased" qualification.
Thank you.
-
Just a little snippet.......the 1901 Census shows James and Catherine HORNBY, the youngest children, "boarding" with their eldest sister Mary Jane HOLMES.
Where are the parents ???
-
I note Mary Jane says her father is a brewer.
There's a Thomas Hornby, brewer, b c1846 married to a Mary and noted as step father to some Tomlinsons. Address 32 Lockhart Road. He's b THornton

Good Morning Mabel,
Excellent research, thank you very much.
The story of Thomas HORNBY is now almost complete with just one or two items to retrieve.
It has been complicated along the way but perseverance is a reward in itself.
Thank you again

Great finds Mabel :)

Both Thomas & William in 1861 are down as born in Chorley. LancashireBMD agrees and gives the mother's maiden name as BANKS.
William goes into teaching and has consistent birth info in 1871 & 1881.
I'm having trouble reliably finding this Thomas in any other census, or William in 1851.
There are 4 Thomas Hornbys born in Kirkham district in 1842-1844, one of which is the Elswick chap.
Are we following the right Thomas?
-
The family are at Water St in Chorley in 1841 (HO107/525/3 fol27 p46 & fol28 p47).
I'm not finding the other children in 1851 either, but Lan-OPC has baptisms.
Agnes married Joseph Pilkington at Preston in 1856, and are back in Water St in 1861.
John's occupation seems consistent throughout - horse keeper, ostler etc.
I'm beginning to think the family were in the water-damaged lot in 1851.

Amelia married Robert Moss at Rivington in 1847. Both were living in Belmont at the Banns, and they too are in Water St in 1861.
