Title: Bastardy Records/Quarter Sessions/Newspapers - Buckingham brothers
Post by: Raindancer411 on Tuesday 19 September 17 19:17 BST (UK)
Hi All, It is looking like my husbands 3rd GGrandmother had three boys all illegitimately every 8 years!!  I was wondering if anyone can find anything in the local newspapers, bastardy records or quarter sessions to help see if I can find their dads.

Details are:

Mum Sarah Buckingham/Buckenham Born 1813 in Shouldham Norfolk

Sons:

Robert Buckingham Born 1838 Shouldham Norfolk
Thomas Buckingham Born 1846 Shouldham Norfolk
Stephen Buckingham Born 1852 Shouldham Norfolk

Many thanks in advance...

Could be the same father for all 3 - no hint of a father on any of the birth certificates?

Is Sarah living with anyone else in 1841/1851 etc or just the 3 boys?

In 1841 she was living with Robert (first born) and her sister and brother in law in st giles, london.

No birth or baptism for Robert and only hint of a father was a probable false name of Robert Buckingham, for which I can find no records.

Other boys she is seen living with in 1851 back in shouldham, but again no name on their birth or baptism records.

Thanks I see when Robert married he named his father as Robert a farmer but as you say likely that was made up.

Did the other boys marry and name a father by any chance?

What year marriage do you have for Thomas and Maria?

There is this one in 1886 Chelsea but a different Thomas

Thomas Henry Buckingham - 29 father David (mother Eliza per baptism)
Mary Maria Cooper - 27 father Samuel

No it is 4 years according to the burial entry so born 1848.

I wonder if he was baptised 1852 age 4?

There is a birth registrarion in Jun 1848 Downham for a Stephen Buckingham - no mothers maiden name so I think that could be him.

And just to confuse matters there is another Stephen born same place in 1847 father Richard but he goes on to marry.

The Stephen that I have is baptised 19/8/1852 in All Saints, Shouldham, Norfolk with Mum, Sarah Buckenham... It has a FHL number 2262702 (but not sure on what or where i would find that lol)

Looking into it, I was wondering if when Robert got married and he put down his father as Robert Buckingham, it was his step dad Robert Ketterington... He was married two years after his mum got married to the ketterington man.  Do you think maybe he stepped in as the father for the day and they just changed his surname lol
