Referring to the 1851 census at Easton, Wiltshire p18
Thomas Smith head 38 baker
Elizabeth .. wife 54
Elizabeth .. dau 32
Arthur .. son 30
i.e. Thomas was 6 when he became a father!
Age 38 is quite clear and seems correct for in 1861 he is 48 . Elizabeth is 62.
Can anyone offer some suggestions? T

1841 census has 'children' Elizabeth & Arthur and other children with the surname Pearce so probably a second marriage for Elizabeth

I think you probably have it Rosie. Then Elizabeth 32 should have been described as step daughter.
I wondered but could not establish that Thomas, bachelor had married a widow. Thanks. T

"Should have gone to Specsavers." I now have "widow",
Thomas' second marriage, when he would have been "widower", has been more difficult. Perhaps it was a Nonconf. marriage, T
