Title: Deciphering a place name
Post by: Edward Scott on Saturday 30 September 17 11:14 BST (UK)
Attached is an extract from the 1619 Visitation of Cambridgeshire which mentions Malyhall in Lincolnshire.

I have run out of 'googling' ideas as to what was meant and wondered whether anyone can work it out.

thanks

Edward

Just a suggestion . . . . .   Sounds like the name of a property.  -    Specially given the name beside the previous generation.

I don't know just guessing, and going by the way some of my distant ancestors were written up.

- or possibly a now deserted /non existent village!

Wiggy.

I agree but sometimes the name of the hall / property can match the location. I feel that this one should not be that hard.

The NS that married Alice was born c1564

I have NS's will and know where he & Alice were buried, I have also sorted out the marriages, births, etc of children.

I wonder if it could be Marley Hall:

Carol, thanks.

I think Marley Hall is a good suggestion, but that one is in Yorkshire. However I have also found one in Cheshire and another in the midlands. It is quite likely that there is or was one in Lincolnshire as well.

Regarding the links you sent earlier, I have tried those as well, also been looking at Lincolnshire maps in the vain hope that something stands out.

Nothing obvious in Lincolnshire wills and admons from mid 1500's to 1750, marriage indexes and licences, tried various searches on Lincstothe past, searched the baptism, marriage, death and apprentice indexes and finally PCC wills.

Slightly frustrating

The 1575 visitation has 'translated' Malyhall to Maltby Hall in Lincolnshire. The only one I have found so far is in the Maltby in S Yorkshire.

There could be another in Maltby (nr Louth) or Maltby le Marsh

There's definitely a Hall in Maltby, Lincs.

Good spot but I think that is Tathwell Hall

Yep - sorry. When the map on Streetmap  is zoomed to the next level it's definitely Tathwell.  I was on my small (and slow) machine so buzzing around the NLS maps was a bit tricky!

Have you found a will for William?  I had a quick look yesterday but couldn't find one.

But there are 3 moats in the bottom left hand corner of this one and at least 2 are in Maltby http://maps.nls.uk/view/101588624

I am really struggling with wills & admons, they wealthy so there should be something.

I have NS died 1638/9 but not his fathers or grandfathers, not in the Lincoln indexes and I cannot see them in the PCC indexes either.

I was wondering about those moats!

On NLS now - there's a manor house SW of Maltby le Marsh. Also Markby to the south of M le M but no sign of a Hall.... and a Mumby   ???

(I managed to get my Pullestons back to 11-12C  but helped by a relative who'd done the hard work)

The sun hasn't been out today here in Yorkshire - we expect to see it some time in April. Plenty of time for G & Ts.

It's a hamlet in Raithby parish ... or at least, it once was
