Title: John & Thomas Hood Bros Sculcoates Tailors and Drapers & London, any Info please
Post by: BushInn1746 on Thursday 05 October 17 22:22 BST (UK)
Hello

John and Thomas Hood, Tailors and Drapers of 3 Savile Street, Sculcoates, Hull, were Brothers according to a Notice of 31st December 1927.

Thomas Hood (at least) has had previous experience in London.

A George Hood was a witness.

Also listed as:-
J. and T. Hood, Sculcoates, Yorkshire, Drapers - Partnership Dissolved (in Bells Weekly Mar 1828)
Thomas Hood, Tailor, 3 Saville St, Hull (Pigot's Commercial 1828)

Any family, Birth, Marriage & Death/Burial information, or anything on these Hoods, please?

Did any survive to the 1841 Census, or move, etc?

Watson & Co who had taken over by 1833, seem to be from Storry's & Co, New Bond Street, London.
Any Hood link?

Thank you, Mark

Possible marriage of Thomas in Sculcoates 1832

If the above marriage is the correct man I can see Thomas Hood & Jane his wife in the 1841 census in South Cave. Thomas is classed as 'Ind'(ependant) and from SCOTLAND.

There is a son Frederick aged two with them, searching the GRO index mothers maiden name was BAKER.

Another son is born in 1846 mothers maiden name BAKER in Sculcoates - James Goldie Bowes Hood. By 1851 Thomas is not there but Jane is the wife of JAMES GOLDIE HOOD aged 45 - brewer & Maltster born Dumfries Scotland.

Your marriage does say ... Thomas Hood of this Parish Tailor & a Bachelor.

I wonder who George Hood the witness was, in the 1827 Notice?

Do Thomas Hood and John Hood (Tailors and Drapers) before 1827; or Thomas Hood 1828 to circa 1833 appear in any:-

a) Land Tax (although not all properties were subject to this Tax), or
b) Poll or Voting List

as Proprietors of the Sculcoates / Hull Tailors and Drapers, Savile Street, please?

If John Hood and/or Thomas Hood owned the property, there will probably be a Property Memorial Registration at Beverley Record Office, which I could request a search for and purchase?

The Property Memorial Registration, might flush out who George Hood was and if the same as the infamous one of Selby, who I cannot prove was linked to?

James Goldie Bowes Hood

Perhaps GOLDIE stems from the remarriage, or the union of the new couple, after the death of Thomas Hood.

BOWES might be the nee surname of Thomas Hood's Mother, don't know.

This naming with middle surnames is typical Scottish.

(Our naming pattern may suggest COOK(e) or PEARSON, also ELLEN or ALFRED).

Thank you, Mark

Hi

I can find no remarriage of Jane Hood nee Baker to James Goldie Hood using either Goldie or Hood as a surname for James.

Thinking James a possible brother of Janes first husband Thomas could possibly be the reason there is no marriage- not sure but I think it was possibly illegal.

But there is a family in Dumfries that do fit with ages we have

Thomas Hood bpt 1800 son of Thomas
James bpt. 1805 - Thomas
John bpt. 1796 - Thomas
George Douglas bpt 1801 - Thomas.

1832 Voters/Poll list for Sculcoates

Thomas Hood - Savile Street
John Hood - King Street

It's the only year I can find.

One Case
Circuit Court, Sitting at Dumfries 15th to the 17th April 1824

John Hood, accused of setting fire to the work-shop of Mr Beck, Coachmaker, Dumfries, on the 24th September last, by which malicious act the building, wood, and part of the materials it contained, were greatly damaged, and must have been totally consumed, but for the promptitude and perseverance of the neighbours. Hood pleaded Guilty, and the libel being restricted, he was sentenced to transportation for life.

The Depute-Advocate, stated that he had consented to do this in consequence of the circumstances that were not divulged ; but no precedent could be drawn from this particular act of leniency.

He goes on to say that should another case of wilful fire raising occur in this neighbourhood, it should be his duty to crave a verdict inferring the last punishment of the Law.

Caledonian Mercury, 3rd June 1824
Monday morning the following convicts left Dumfries gaol, under an escort, for Leith, in order to be transported according to their sentence at last Circuit Court:- John Hood, for life ; Patrick Millar MacClatchie, Alexander M'Math, and John Smith, for 14 years ; and James Gray and Alex. Moffat, for seven years.
Alexander Moffat - Carlisle Patriot 5 June 1824.

 --------

August 1798 John Hood late of Watton in the East Riding, was charged with highway robbery by John Mackenzie of Scarborough, robbing him on Sunday evening the 13th May. John Hood was Discharged by Proclamation.

Mark

Good Morning

Thanks to Ros.

In 1886 Thomas HOOD BENTLEY gave his address as Burnham Somersetshire [Somerset] and Wife was Camilla Bentley.

Witnessed by Inglis GOLDIE and Edna Jane DENHAM

I wonder if there is any connection to James Goldie HOOD, and Frederick HOOD, Brewers, of Hessle, near Hull?

Thank you Claire, Ros And
Thank you Rootschatters who have been slaving away for about three years.

I just wonder if the George Hood, witnessing the document printed in the newspaper (in my initial first post of this thread), is my mystery George Hood?

Perhaps another trip to Beverley and see the Deeds Registrations will blow down the Stone Wall that has plagued us for 50 years, who really was George Hood of Selby?

My Father's only knowledge is that we were claimed to have Scottish origin.

Quote from Marie
"Hi Mark, Ros et al,

Loving this conversation!

Haven't looked at Camilla's family, the Denhams, for many years, but they were a large, obviously close Somerset family.  At least three of Camilla's brothers, Henry, Edward and Digby, came to Australia too, and a sister, Edna.  Digby was actually a Premier of Queensland briefly, albeit a rather unsuccessful one!

Inglis Goldie was a brother in law, having married a sister of Camilla.

I don't know about Goldie Hood, Brewers.  In 1891 Thomas Hood Bentley was in Gateshead with his wife and two children and Edna Denham.  This must have been shortly before he acquired the ship "Earl Cadogan" and started his sailing around the world.

The newspaper snippet, 'Partnership Dissolved ' date in snippet 31st December 1832. witness George Hood.

If you can get a look the original document to compare signatures with your known George Hood signature, should resolve this issue one way or the other.

1832 Voters/Poll list for Sculcoates

Thomas Hood - Savile Street
John Hood - King Street

It's the only year I can find.

Thank you.

If Thomas Hood (Savile Street) & John Hood appear on an 1832 Voters Poll List, they would have to be property owners, usually at the place given in the Poll Book list (even if the Poll Book was to vote for a York Candidate, or elsewhere).

The reply from the E. R. Deeds Registry, hopefully might confirm who their witness George HOOD was, in 1827.

However, George Hood (witness), was probably their Brother George Douglas Hood, bapt 1801 Dumfries / Dłn Phris, Scotland, Father - Thomas Hood.

 ----------

In the 1835 Kingston upon Hull - Poll Book

There are two Thomas HOODs
HOOD, Thomas, Church Lane
HOOD, Thomas, Holborn Street

Can't find these in the 1841 Census?
