Title: Alfred Woods an Australian miner in Cape Colony.

Last weekend I discovered my Grandfather Alfred Edward Woods served in the Colonial Light Horse during the Second Boer War for 6 months from December 1900 to June 1901.

Alfred was born in 1869 but gave wrong ages in many official records. He was a gold miner and was in Canada at the outbreak of WW1.

I have a application for land in Canada from 1909 showing his service in the Boer War and a copy of the medal roll for the Colonial Light Horse showing the medals he was awarded.

He left England for New York and onto Canada in 1908.

Is there any records that might show when he entered South Africa and where he lived. Any help or pointers greatly appreciated.

I'm not very clever when it comes to SA records, however there is this mention of Alfred E WOODS in Cape Town in 1894 "Liquidation and Distribution Account" (sounds like something to do with bankruptcy)

If he went on a troopship it will be hard to find which ship he was on.

The Liquidation and Distribution account usually accompanies the Estate and is usually the final winding up and distribution of it after all expenses and disbursements to beneficiaries and creditors have been made and monies outstanding to the estate have been collected.

So in all likely hood not your Alfred

Many thanks for replies. I think he arrived in SA as a miner not a soldier. I have the passenger details of when he left Southampton and arrived in New York in 1908 and when he applied for land in 1909. Looks like the passenger lists have yet to be transcribed for some of the journeys from SA to England and from Aus to SA.

You may find that he will be on a ship from Aus that stops at SA, probably bound for Southampton and he would have disembarked at either Durban or Cape Town.
