Hi
Does anyone have access to the Parish records of Cardiff St John. I am trying to find if the marriage entry for John Biddle and Sarah Anderson gives any information regarding his father or age or where he came from please.
Many thanks
David ;)

Welsh Newspapers on line
Monmouth Merlin, 1 May 1830
Family Notices
April 20th, John Biddle, of Bristol to Sarah, widow of the late Major Anderson, of Cardiff
-
The Cambrian, 8 May 1830 has an advertisement for a ship sailing on the 25th May for Rio and the Cape of Good Hope - John Biddle, Commander.
-
Hi again, as you do not state at what age John Biddle died, I can see a Richard Biddle marrying in the same church an Eleanor Price 14th August 1815, she possibly died as again I can see baptiisms of children in same church Richard/Charlotte and in 1851 census:-
Richard Biddle 52 b Wooten under Edge
Charlotte 60 b London
Ann Cooper/Cowper Biddle 23 b Cardiff
Richard Biddle 18 b Ireland
Charles H Biddle 16 b Ireland
Tyrell Edward Biddle 5 b London
Plus Swinhoe visitors b India
Census ref HO107/1680/77/15
Keyboard86
EDIT mmm unsure of marriage to Eleanor Price, as going on census 1841/51 he would have been 15/16?!
Pre 1837 marriages would not show his father, possibly where he was residing at marriage, not always his pob?!

Hi All
Thanks for the very interesting information, Keyboard, where were the family staying as on the 1851 Census in London, Widow Sarah and children are staying with Swinhoe family from India so that at least proves a link between John her late husband and Richard and would indicate that John was also born in Wootton.
Many thanks
David :D

Details of wedding as above but also provides John's address at the time.
You say he "died young" - do you have an idea of age at death?
-
Hi
John was dead by the 1841 Census as his widow Sarah is shown in London with her children. I wonder if he died at sea. The problem I have is that there are 2 John Biddle's 1. born in Wootton under Edge, same parents as Richard Biddle and another John born 1805 in Bristol parents John and Patience so all though the connection with Richard and John's widow Sarah would indicate him All records seem to indicate that John was from Bristol ?
Kind Regards

A "John Biddle, Commander" made a number of sailings in "the China". The last sighting I can see is
Shipping and Mercantile Gazette, 17 Sep 1839
"For sale, freight or charter - The fine, new A1 eleven years, British built ship CHINA, Captain Biddle, Commander, 658 tons (N.M), is just arrived from Calcutta...."
Yet to find a sailing for a John Biddle, Commander after that date (at least until a Commander Biddle of the US navy appears in 1847). But still checking.
The 1830 sailing referred to in a previous post of a Commander Biddle, from Cardiff would make the John, baptised 1805 to John and Patience in 1805, quite young to be master? (although baptism doesn't pinpoint date of birth in lots of instances).
Agreed - strong Bristol links.
-
Hi Hanes
I think you also make a strong point about a Commander at 25. How far is Wootton from Bristol as I feel the link between Richard and widow Sarah with the Swinhoe's is an indication also Sarah's first marriahe was to a Major in the Indian Army so the links there seem strong, would you agree ?
Many thanks
David :D

The Wotton under Edge John (1797?) was born to a Thomas Biddle. The Bristol John (1805) was born to a John Biddle.
Naming patterns can be a factor in determining parents but, unfortunately, John and Sarah named the boys John and Thomas. But the Thomas is interesting.
It's the Swinhoe, Calcutta link from the '41 Census (with Sarah) and '51 (with Richard) that stands out.

Biddle sailings - latest sightings -
Shipping and Mercantile Gazette
3 Oct 1839
CUSTOM HOUSE
Docks, London
Hauled in (Oct 2)
China, Biddle, to load
21 Oct 1839
CUSTOM HOUSE
Outwards (Oct 19)
China, Biddle, for Sydney
So, what happened to the China? Unfortunately, not an easy name to chase in newspapers.

Have had a peep at Lloyds Register -
http://lrfoundation.org.uk/public_education/reference-library/register-of-ships-online
Can spot Biddle 1839 and before - but not 1840.
LLoyds List, 18 November 1839
GRAVESEND
17th, China, Biddle, sailed for Sydney NSW

Hi Hanes
many thanks for all the hard work you have done for me. I am trying to help a friend whose wife was Mary Biddle prove a family link to the John Biddle who was the founder of the Unitarian religious movement at the time of Oliver Cromwell.
Where do you think I can find the marriage of Thomas Biddle and Ann c1794 ?
Kind Regards
David :D

Gloucester Journal, 23 Feb 1807
"All Persons having any Demands of Thomas Biddle, late of Wotton-under-Edge, in the County of Gloucester, Attorney-at-Law, deceased are requested to deliver in Accounts thereof, either to Mr Richard Cooper, of Tetbury, in the same County ....."

Search this site for a Thomas Biddle, marriage year 1791, and cross check with the above article.

Hi Hanes
Thanks for that information, Richard must have been either his father in law or bother in law. I found Thomas's birth in 1768 in Wootton son of Matthew Biddle and Mary Hick who married in Stinchcombe in 1759, Matthew being from Wootton, but I cannot find a birth c1736 for Matthew although there is another Marrhew and Sarah having children at that time. Can you help.
Kind Regards
David ;)

Boyd's Marriage Index
Matthew Biddle to Sarah Week(e)s at Newington Bagpath, Gloucestershire, 1723
Baptisms (FindMyPast)
Mary Biddle, bap 20 Jan 1724, Wotton under Edge, parents Matthew and Sarah
Sarah Biddle, bap 18 Nov 1727, Berkeley, Gloucestershire, father Matthew, mother not named
Matthew Biddle, bap 19 Nov 1732, St. Andrew, Holborn, London, parents Matthew and Sarah
Katherin Biddle, 12 Mar 1738, Wotton under Edge, parents Matthew and Sarah
Berkeley and Wotton under Edge quite close to each other - London is another matter!!
-
I had a look at several baptisms in Berkeley around 1727 and the practice in that parish was NOT to capture mother's name on the baptismal record.
