I would like to find out what happened to Archibald Brown and Margaret Sutherland who were married in Wilton, Roxburghshire in 1872. Archibald was born c1850 in Hawick, Roxburghshire and Margaret was born c1852 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire. The last information I have found on them is from the 1881 Census where they are shown as living with 3 children at 16 Wilton Crescent, Wilton, Roxburghshire as follows:-
Archibald Brown aged 31 Woolspinner
Margaret Brown aged 28
George Brown aged 12 Scholar
Jane Brown aged 8 Scholar
Margaret aged 7m
Can anyone help find out what happened to them after 1881?

There's a death in Thornton, Fife but may not be the same Margaret?
Married women in Scotland are registered on death with both maiden & marital surnames.
SUTHERLAND MARGARET 63
1915
457/B 81 Thornton
BROWN MARGARET 63
1915
457/B 81 Thornton

Hi Rosinish
Thanks for your speedy response. Unfortunately the Margaret Sutherland/Brown who died in Thornton in 1915 is not our woman. I have checked it at ScotlandsPeople.

The family in Galashiels doesn't look very promising. None of Archibald's children in the 1881 Census are in the 1891 one and viceversa. Do you not agree?

There are deaths showing in Amesbury Massachusetts for daughters Jane and Margaret (found by doing a general search on familysearch for surname Brown born Scotland and with parents Archibald Brown and Margaret Sutherland). Might therefore be worth searching US passenger lists and Massachusetts census records etc.

Sorry, Should have added a wee note...
Yes but when I clicked on Jane's name a message 'Temporarily Unavailable' so I clicked back & copied the details as I couldn't tell what Jane's relationship was to Archibald.
I now see she's 'wife' & not another relation.
Had wondered if Margaret had disappeared & Archibald was still around but seems they all disappear.

Possible death for Archibald in Amesbury,Mass.25 April 1886 of TB.Parents named as James and Jane and b Scotland 1850. Showing as married and a weaver.

There is also a death for Annie J Brown born 1883 Amesbury -parents Archibald Brown and Margaret Sutherland (Death 27 Dec 1905).
Assuming this is the correct family they must have emigrated between 1881 and 1883.
Annie Brown can be found on the 1900 US census in Amesbury showing as step daughter of Joseph Morse. So looks like Margaret remarried. Sister Jane(Jeannie) is also in the household, emigration year given as 1882.

Hi all
I think we are getting a lot warmer with the US information. I can confirm that Archibald's parents are James (Brown) and Jane (Pott) and Margaret's parents are Mary Brown and John Sutherland not Joseph.

My mistake- Margaret Brown Morse's father is named as John Sutherland on her death cert. - second husband was Joseph.

Hi All
Thanks for your help with this query. Your response has been fantastic.
I have learned a valuable lesson from you today. It is if you can't find an ancestor, investigate the possibility that they may have emigrated.
Thanks again

It would appear Jane, Margaret & Annie died in Massachusetts
Jane/jennie died oct 1910
married Charles bogret
Margaret died june 1903 married Edward Klein
Annie died Dec 1905
George born circa 1869 before Archibald. & Margaret married
Mary born Oct 1874
IGI / LDS - familysearch site can help as a index - but best to check out the official enters and use personally submitted enters as a guide

Hi Terianne
Thanks for that info.
Emigration to the US does not seem to have been a great decision by Archibald and his family. He died within a few years of their arrival. His children only lived until they were 19,22,22 and 37 and although Jane and Margaret got married, I can find no children.
