Title: Penarth Cement works
Post by: wdytya on Wednesday 25 October 17 10:22 BST (UK)
Hi
Walter Johnson Cooper ran the Penarth Cement works. I have found him and his family on the 1901 census with his wife and daughters Annie 1895 and Doris 1899. I believe there was another daughter and a son but cannot find them. Walter was born in 1868 in Walsall and married Mary Annie Shepperd in 1893 in Penarth.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Thanks Cas for the info.  Strange the 1911 census states "only 3 children born to couple by 1911 stated one died " as I have a photo dated 5th August 1913 which has written on it "the Misses Cooper and Brother. There are three girls in the photo. Given that Walter Johnson Cooper married in 1893 and their daughter Annie Marjorie was born in 1894 I presume the missing daughter and son from the census records were born after this time?? The brother looks like a similar age to Annie 1894 whilst the other daughter looks similar in age to Doris.  Can you confirm their address was " The Elms" Lavernock Road.

Yes that was the address given 1911. Maybe they were family in photo not siblings?

Newspapers & F M P have some stuff about Walter he was quite wealthy when died in 1928.

They married June 17th 1893 St Augustine Church, Penarth, small piece in Western Mail 23 June.

Added: marriage is online.

He died 27 May 1928 in Parkfield, Paighton Devon formerly of the Elms Lavernock. https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/Calendar?surname=Cooper&yearOfDeath=1928&page=9#calendar

A newspaper piece  after his death mentions daughters only, no names given.

Thanks again, how do you manage to find all this info? Gosh he was rich!
Are the newspaper articles online or do I need a subscription to FindMyPast?
I would welcome your opinion of the photo I have of the Cooper family to see if you agree they look like siblings? Can I attach a photo on a message?

Witness on marriage Cert is Gerald Cooper (brother b c 1871) Alfred T Cooper & Hettie? Cooper (parents) also Alice Shepherd. Alfred Thomas his father was an Engineer. They were married by license.

I cannot find any evidence that he had any more children up to 1911, he was a Bach in 1893 when married.

Has children around Walters daughters age, possible cousins & siblings?

How do you know were and when photo taken?  is there any info written on pic?

I think the photo is too big to attach to this site. If you want you can pm me with your email address and I can send you a copy. The photo was in an album that I found in the local records office and contained photos of the cement works I was researching and included this one of Mr Coopers family. Written in ink on the photo are the words "misses Coopers and brother 1913"
Thanks for the info on Walters brother and it could be the two unknown children in the photo are Gerald Coopers children and were visiting?
One other clue I have is that two steam locomotives working at the cement works were names Annie and Doris after his daughters. Perhaps therefore he only had two daughters??
