I have another missing Person, this time in the 1881 Census. My GG Grandfather Samuel William Davies. Here is what I know...
Born around 1877 Newton, Cheshire. (dont have an exact date, censuses all point to this date).
Parents believed to be John Davies (Flintshire) and Elizabeth J Newat (Birkenhead).
1891 Census Shows him as a Blacksmiths assistant, living on Astley Street, Dukinfield.
Marries Esther Sanderson, 1896, Ashton under Lyne.
1901 Census, He's a Brushmakers Carter living on Boodle Street, Ashton Under Lyne.
1911 Census, A Carriers Carter, No 11 Littlemoor Lane, Oldham.
Death Possibly 1947, Oldham.
Hopefully thats enough to go on, Thanks...

can you tell us when and where his parents wed?
i cannot see a suitable birth in the registers to confirm year/place of birth
-
Hi Pauline, alas I cannot, I've never found any evidence of a wedding taking place. The only mention I have of Samuels parents are from an 1891 census. John Davies and Elizabeth Davies are living with (amongst others) John's step daughter Emma Newat. The middle J initial comes from the 1901 census.

Was he by chance William Samuel Davies born 1879 Chester no mothers maiden name ref 8a 439
Have you searched for any NEWAT surnames

It's not impossible, if they got the names the wrong way round. There are a couple of candidates ive seen on the free bmd search, a year either side of 1877, theres just no way to prove which one (if any) he is.
I did find an Elizabeth J Newat which must be her. It was in an 1871 census in Nantwich, said she was a school mistress from St Ives. Later censuses have her birthplace in Birkenhead. Newat also appears to be an incredibly rare surname, so much so that I wonder if its a mistranscription?
This is a branch of the tree that I've taken rather a long break from so am just retracing my steps atm.

What about 1939 which should give you his date of birth

There's nothing conclusive unfortunately :'( :'( :'(
One or two that could be him (no Samuel William or W's Tho). As there are too many I cant afford to unlock any of the households. I wont give up on the 1939 census idea tho, just temporarily stumped ???
-
Unfortunately we are not allowed to give details from 1939, perhaps something else will turn up
By the way, was Elizabeth on 1871 married?

Just had a check and she wasnt :)
Its strange, for such a rare surname, I cant seem to find her or a possible family before the 1871 census. When you couple it together with the change in birthplace from Birkenhead to St Ives, well, just seems a little strange.
-
My guess is perhaps John from Flintshire was married and therefore not free to marry her, what about Emma born circa 1874?

Yes that certainly sounds plausible. No joy on Emma unfortunately, nothing at all. The only other mention of a Newat in Cornwall I've found is a record on find my grave for a Lucy Elizabeth Newat in Falmouth cemetary, but no dates that I can see.

Is there a marriage for Emma?

Not that I am able to find :'( I'm starting to remember why I took a break from this side of the family tree :P
-
There is a family tree with same parents but showing
EMILY HARTE DAVIES born circa 1875 but on 1901 she is shown as just Emma Harte married with her parents, strange thing is I can' find any births for these sibings

Yes me neither, nothing for either Emma Newat or Emily Harte Davies, this whole part of the family is turning out to be really tough to crack.

Potential from 1881?
Elizabeth Hewitt 35 - widow b Liverpool, weaver
Henrietta Hewitt 15 - b USA
Margaret Hewitt 11 - b USA
Emily Hewitt 7 - b Newton (Emma?]
Saml. Hewitt 3 - b Newton
Frederick Hewitt 1 - b Newton
Note Margaret Shaw aged 22 b USA lodging with John & Elizabeth Davies in 1891
Marriages 1890
Margaret Hewitt <<<
James Lowe
James Shaw <<<
Emma Winterbotham
-
Emily Hewitt married James Hart 1897 Dukinfield St Mark
-
Can find birth registrations for Emma and Frederick William Hewitt with mmn Crighton (or similar) but not samuel yet
-
He is Samuel Hewitt in 1881 4055/53/44
With mother Elizabeth, sister Emily and other siblings.
Plus visitors Crighton :)
-
Judging by 1881 Samuel (b c1878) and Frederick William b1880 are separate individuals
-
Yes, that’s right.
Sorry, I didn’t see your post with 1881 when I posted mine.
-
Wow, this is great detective work. So are we saying that Elizabeth J Newat is actually a typo for Hewitt? And Elizabeth J "Newat" (Hewitts) maiden name was Crighton? Or have I got that totally wrong?
-
Yes the evidence is pointing that way. On 1861 there's an Elizabeth Crighton in Dukinfield b Birkenhead c1847
Now for some speculation
Familysearch has a Henrietta Hewitt b Monson Massachusetts 1866 to an Isaac & Lizzie Hewitt (both English)
07 May 1870 Margaret Hewitt b Steubenville, Jefferson, Ohio to Isaac Hewitt & Elizabeth Crighton
1871 Isaac Hewitt marries Elizabeth Jane "Cretan" in Jefferson Ohio
-
Looks like that the moment.
Here are the Hewitts in Ohio in 1870
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M6VR-T84
And Henrietta’s birth https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FXHY-WXV

think Isaac may be local - there are two the right age in the Ashton area in 1861, one with mother Margaret.
Not sure whether he stayed in the US - there's an Isaac the right age with wife and children (and step son) in Pennsylvania from 1880 census onwards. oldest of their children is b c1872. He's a coal miner, which fits
-
Im amazed that you guys have managed to piece this together so quickly. I've been struggling with this part of the family for such a long time ;D
