I have a Thomas Joseph CHILDS born 1858 his parents are Charles CHILDS & Anne ROBINSON they married app 1855 I'm trying to find info on them & their parents but am having trouble researching the name Childs prity sure this family is from Hampshire any help greatly appreciated
-
Have you found Thomas on the 1861 census with his parents? That should give birthplaces for them and the marriage certificate for Charles and Anne should give their fathers names to trace back.
-
Birth for Thomas was registered Mar 1858 Portsea Island
Marriage Jun 1855 Portsea
-
Not getting on too well with finding Charles and Anne - have you got the birth certificate which confirms those were his parents?
There is another family in 1861 * which might fit but different parents names :-\
* forget that one they too have a son Thomas in 1858

Potential for Charles in 1861?

Thanks for the help I'm helping my gr aunt (by marriage) she knew the parents names for Thomas she can't afford the certificates so trying to wing it at the moment I might have to buy her the marriage certificate to see if I can work their parents out I thought researching my NEW surname caused me grief this 1 has given me a headache

I think I may have found Ann & Thomas in 1861?
Although Ann is Sarah A Childs :-\
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MWM8-CBD
A "J" can be confused with an "S"?
So Thomas S could well be Thomas J :-\
-
I was just looking at that one KG ;D
Sarah A was born Sheerness Kent and a Seamans wife.
Middle initial for Thomas could be a J
-
Where do you have Thomas on census - it may help us to track back

I know Thomas Joseph Childs was a captain he married in Sydney Australia in 1881 to Emma Pearce he died 1939 at Balmain Nsw Aus my gr aunt said he thinks Charles could have been a captain to
-
Charles Childs father was Joseph Childs according to marriage, Joseph's occupation was a Carpenter
Ann Robinson - Father Thomas Robinson occ Farmer
The image appears to indicate that Charles & Ann were both widowed (It is not clear)

Thankyou very much Rosie

Hi,
I think that this is a possibility for Thomas Joseph CHILDS in 1861,
1861 RG9/635 f.118 p.4 Portsea, Hampshire
Portsea Island Union Workhouse Number 2
Francis Joseph CHILDS 3 Hampshire Portsea
I realise that it says Francis rather than Thomas but I can't find a Francis Joseph CHILDS born anywhere in 1858 +/-5 and I can't see any other record for him after 1861.
I think the Thomas J CHILDS in 1861 found by KGarrad could be Thomas James ALLEN,
Birth
Thomas James ALLEN Mar Q 1856 Portsea Island 2b 361
mmn: SMITH
Marriage
Thomas CHILDS Jun Q 1859 Portsea Island 2b 642
Sarah Ann ALLEN
In 1851 there is a Sarah ALLEN aged 29, born in Sheerness, Kent is living with her mother Sarah SMITH in Stoke Damerel Devon, HO107/1882 f.537 p.31.
In 1861 Sarah A CHILDS is living in the same house as a Susannah SMITH, possibly be a relative?
In 1871 Sarah CHILDS aged 48, born Sheerness, Kent is living with her husband Thomas CHILDS and her Thomas CHILDS aged 16 born Landport. RG10/1127 f.94 p.20
Regards,
Daisy

When Charles Childs married Ann Robinson 25/6/1855 Portsea, he is a widower and occupation is Greenwich Pensioner - Ann shown as a widow although her father Thomas also shown as Robinson. Just states 'full age' for both.
1851 Census - Portsea
Charles Childs 42 Greenwich Pensioner b. Portsea
Sarah Childs 34 (??think this should be 39 as she was 30 in 1841) b. Portsea
John B. Childs 4
Sarah F. Childs 1
GRO births index shows maiden name of Sarah was 'Bonney'.
Charles Childs married Sarah Bonney 30/11/1828 Portsea - children born/baptised Portsea:
Charles bc.1828, bp.11/9/1830, buried 17/9/1830
Charles Bonney bp.18/5/1834
Sarah b.Mar.qtr.1839,d. Mar.qtr.1840
1841 Census - Portsea
Sarah Childs 30
Charles Childs 7 living with a Hannam family - Charles senior not with them (probably at sea).
Further children:
James Bonney b.1845, bur.21/10/1847
John Bonney b.1846, bp.29/7/1855
Sarah Frances b.19/9/1849, bp.10/2/1856
James Bonney b.16/8/1851, bp.10/2/1856
Mary Ann b.22/4/1853, bp.10/2/1856
We know that Charles remarried in 1855 so wife Sarah must be the one who died Dec.1854 Portsea aged 42.
By 1861 children John, Sarah, James and Mary are in Portsea Workhouse (as already stated) together with a Francis Joseph Childs - I completely agree with Daisypetal and believe this is actually Thomas Joseph and that enumerator made a mistake (there is no birth for a Francis Joseph Childs).
Can't easily see where Charles and Ann are in 1861 or if either, or both, had died since the children were all in the Workhouse.
Charles Childs bp.22/9/1808 Portsea, son of Joseph and Mary Ann.

I think this could be Charles in 1861, written as CHILD instead of CHILDS,
1861 RG9/653 f.6 p.9 Parish: Whippingham, Town: East Cowes, Isle of Wight
Ferry Boat Inn, Castle Street
Charles CHILD Boarder Mar 50 Mariner Portsmouth, Hampshire
Head of household John GROVES.
and a possible death,
Charles CHILDS Sep Q 1866 Alverstoke 2b 312
Age: 56

Thankyou very much
