Title: DEAN family
Post by: Kath77 on Saturday 28 October 17 21:29 BST (UK)
My grandfather's uncle, aunt and cousins emigrated to New Zealand in the 1920s. They departed from Southampton on Sep 25th 1924 on the Remeura and arrived in Wellington. I'd love to know what happened to them after they arrived as I don't believe they returned to the UK.

Sidney William Dean (b.23 Aug 1869, an architect)
Nellie Dean (b.1872 nee Wilkinson)
Kathleen Peggy Dean (b.15 Jul 1909)
Joan Margery Dean (b.8 Jul 1911)

They also had an older daughter, Dorothy Mabel Dean, who had previously moved to New Zealand (1914) with her husband Lionel Edwin Austin Rolph (b.1892, a farmer), and I believe he lost his life in WW1.

Does anyone have a connection to these people? Or could anyone point me in the right direction please?

Many thanks,
Katherine  :)

Ah, thank you, yes that date / age does look like it could fit with his birthdate. I will have to investigate earlier emigration dates - as Nellie appears from 1919 too - perhaps they were back in 1924 for a visit...

A Dorothy Mabel Rolph married an Arthur Floyd Collins in 1927 (1927/6457)

There is a death entry that seems to match this Dorothy suggesting she was born 1894 though.  This is a long time between Dorothy and Kathleen if that is the case.  Were there other children?

1978/42942   Collins   Dorothy Mabel   9 July 1894

Fantastic - yes that is our Lionel. Such a sad story as they were married for such a short time. Lovely to see Dorothy mentioned!

I had another look on Ancestry and it seems that the Deans first travelled to NZ in 1914 with Dorothy and Lionel (there's also an incoming record in 1923, so I wonder what they came back for...) There was mass advertising for farmers to travel to NZ at the time, so I wonder if that sparked it.

And yes, Dorothy was born in 1894! The gap between the children always puzzled me. In the 1911 census Neliie says she's only had 3 children, but one has died and yesterday I found a baptism for Sidney Bryant Dean who died age 2 in 1909. That's still a 13 year age gap though.

I've had a look on the BMD website you suggested and found Nellie died in 1950.

Here's the updated timeline so far if you're interested :-) ... https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/115222903/person/410141254534/facts (https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/115222903/person/410141254534/facts)

In Paperpast you will find advertisements for the Marine hotel in Sumner from October 1918 with the proprietor being S W Dean, so that may be their income?

Oh my!! What a treat ;D

Yes, I think they were a social family! His father was Eastbourne Railway station master for 40 years and knew everyone in the town, and from photos I think they were quite well-to-do.

I wondered if Kathleen was really known as Peggy as her baptism record is Peggy Kathleen.

I will certainly dig into that website some more - thank you! I'm intrigued by the hotel ad. He was a civil engineer in the UK, but maybe that didn't work out or he took early 'retirement', or they fancied a lifestyle change? The 'new management' seems to fit with that...

I'm sure there are others here, especially from that area, who will be able to help further.

The death for Joan Marjorie HUTCHINSON (nee DEAN) has been indexed at NZ BDM as >

1993 / 42965  - HUTCHINSON - Joan Margery - date of birth :  8 July 1911

And just to confirm above death is for correct person (as there was someone with a very similar name), an Archives New Zealand listing for her Probate record.

https://archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=6583679

Joan's husband was Ormond HUTCHINSON (the man named in her father's will).  He died at Christchurch in 1978.

From record indexes, it seems that Ormond's first wife had died and he married Joan c. 1945.

Wow - thanks minniehaha and Lucy2 - that's amazing!  :o

Interesting to see how the newspaper records those lovely snapshots of life - it seems like it must've been a small tightly-knit community. Love that they go to Spain for a poultry convention!  ;D

The will and administration are fab - such a lot of information there. Having the daughters' married names are a real help. Off to comb them for further info.

Thanks again  :)
