Do you have a place and date of birth for her? Is Prout her maiden name or married surname?

Hello Alan,

Wilfred's mother Emily died in 1945. Her obit states she was entombed at Woodlawn Mausoleum and mentions her two sons.

Thank you , fantastic , if you find anything like that on her husband Joshua Prout I would appreciate it , he apparently left England and formed a building company in San Francisco and helped rebuild the city after the quake . I believe he had premises in Turk St .
Kind regards
Alan

In case this helps:

Joshua Prout was in the 1911 San Francisco Directory
Prout Joshua carp, r 2020 Turk [Street]

1908 Directory
Prout Joshua, bldr, 2020 Turk

1905 SF Directory
Two Prouts - R J (emp W F & Co Ex) and Stephen (condtr U RR).  No Joshua

I lived in San Francisco for a number of years.  While I cannot visit the city (at this point), I might be able to answer general questions, if you have any.

Hello Lisa , thank you very much for your reply . Do you think 2020 Turk St was their residential address or builders yard ? I have come across a few more addresses they lived at and wonder if you knew what they were like ?
515 Magellan Ave
1177 California St , apartment 1202
645 Stockton St
118 Dolores
1413 Willard St
Fillimore St
I guess its all changed so much by now , I think the apartment in California St was 1990 and I think they might have finished up in Fillimore St .
Any suggestions most welcome
Regards
Alan

Hi Alan:

Thank you for the opportunity for me to try to help.  Of course, the following are pure guesses, as zoning laws and neighbourhoods could have changed, but this is what I believe could be somewhat accurate...
[Note you can see the residences by looking at current online maps - I use go**le maps. (I don't know if we can mention websites.)  ;) ]

2020 Turk Street - I believe it was his residence, as "r" is indicated in the directory ("r" was either resides or residence).  Trying an internet search (Prout "2020 Turk" San Francisco) results also include "h" for what I believe to be house.  Looking at a current online map, I also believe it would be his residence.

515 Magellan Avenue (his address in c1931?) (Also listed at this address was I L Prout)
House built in 1922?  I would guess this was his residence.
I actually don't know too much about this neighbourhood, but looking at the online map, the neighbourhood has beautiful houses.

1177 California St , apartment 1202
Current building built in 1974?  I believe this would have been a residence.  Buildings in this part of the city burned during the 1906 earthquake.  If he lived on an upper floor, he could have had amazing views of the city.
We lived in the neighbourhood.  It was somewhat upscale (we weren't terrible upscale, however).  ;)  When we lived there, Huntington Park was a beautiful little park.  Depending upon his religion, he possibly could have attended Grace Cathedral, which was steps away from his residence.

645 Stockton St
Built in 1928? Buildings in this part of the city burned during the 1906 earthquake.
I would guess it was his residence.  If the white building is 645 Stockton, and if he lived on an upper floor, I believe he would have had a gorgeous view of the city.  This also could have been a somewhat upscale neighbourhood.

118 Dolores
Built in 1908? I would guess it was his residence.  While the neighbouring buildings are cute, I would think that they were beautiful, prior to what looks like siding being added to the exterior.  I don't know anything about this neighbourhood.

1413 Willard St
Most likely his residence.  This could have also been a nice neighbourhood.  While we also lived several blocks away from this address (we moved around a lot), I don't know anything about the blocks surrounding this building.  There were a number of beautiful Victorian buildings where we lived; and the majority were well kept up.  Looking at the image for this road, I can tell you from experience that he could have had irritating moments when he was trying to get out of a parking space if people were parked too closely to him.  Maneuvering in and out of parking spaces on hills can be quite a challenge if one is pinned in a space.

Fillimore St - Fillmore Street?

Mr. Prout lived in what I consider to be beautiful buildings.  The above locations in the city were (when I lived in San Francisco) generally nice to very nice neighbourhoods.  He must have taken pride in where he lived and (being in the profession) possibly could have enjoyed the architecture surrounding him and the beauty the city offered.

I would be happy to help if you have any other questions.   :)

Thank you Lisa , J Prout and Sons helped rebuild San Francisco after the earthquake . On Ivor L Prout  obituary it mentions that he was a pioneer of San Francisco and remained proud of building homes in St Francis Woods , Fores Hills and Pacific Heights . He asked for any donations at his funeral to go to St Anthony's Kitchen .
They sounded a nice family .
Thanks again for a lovely insight into the homes of my Prouts .
Kind regards
Alan

I just looked up Forest Hill, as I had heard of the neighbourhood, but didn't know where it is located.  515 Magellan Avenue appears to be in this neighbourhood - no wonder the homes are quite beautiful as it is an affluent part of the city.

Was Ivor born in the early 1900s?  If so, I'm a bit surprised that he was a pioneer of San Francisco, as that seems a bit late.  However, my San Francisco research is limited as I've only researched my husband's ancestors who lived there, so perhaps pioneers included those born in the early 1900s.

I would imagine that Joshua Prout was quite busy as a carpenter/builder/etc. as quite a bit of San Francisco was destroyed by the 1906 earthquake/fire.

One more image to point out (in case you don't know), again depending upon where in the building Mr. Prout was residing (at 1177 California Street), he could have heard the clanging of the cable car bells as the cable cars went by.  While it was charming most of the time, there were a few times that I was wishing they would stop.   ;)  ;D

You're welcome for the insight.  It has been fun remembering bits about the city.  Lisa

PS  It was kind of Mr. Prout/the family to direct donations to St. Anthony's Kitchen.  They do sound like a wonderful family.

Hi Lisa , yes Ivor was born in 1906 in Wales , Joshua was born in 1869 in Devon , England and went over to San Francisco in 1907 . It was perhaps a bit of artistic licence to call Ivor a pioneer but probably feelings were strong on the occasion of his death , he was also an aviator . I found they were living at 2530 Fillmore St in 1945 and 2536 Fillmore St in 1959 . It does not look far from Turk St and California St on the map . I too looked at Magellan Ave in Forest Hills , maybe it was one of the homes they built .
I watched a favourite film of mine last night  Bullitt with Steve Mcqueen and wondered which streets the car chase went on in , I also like the Streets of San Francisco too , I bet you do too . I bet you visited Alcatraz too { as a tourist , } . I think I have the last remaining member of that side of the family living in El Monte , California is bigger than I thought . I noticed some of the house prices in San Francisco , very expensive , probably on par with London and Paris , if not more ? It has a lot of character though .
Glad it has bought back memories for you .
Kind regards
Alan

Hi Alan:

We lived in several neighbourhoods in San Francisco (always looking for a change of scenery).  My family rented as we could not afford to buy property.  One of the houses in which we lived was a Victorian.  Our landord was contacted by someone with the TV show, The Streets of San Francisco.  They asked if they could use the exterior of the house for filming; the landlord said yes.  The brief scene showed two people arguing near the front door and eventually tumbling down the stairs.  We were honoured to think that they wanted to include our house in the show until we found out that it was chosen because the stairs were wooden, old and had a lot of "bounce".  It was safer for the stuntmen to tumble down our stairs rather than using other houses in the neighbourhood.  ;D ;D

Bullitt:  I believe one of the chases was on Divisadero Street (Pacific Heights), going down the hill toward the Marina District.

I've gone to Alcatraz three times since moving to California.  The last time, we stayed overnight with our Scout troop (we "won" a lottery to stay on the island - paying a fee of course, and performing a service project).  It was one of the best overnighters I have ever experienced.  The park ranger stayed with our group and showed us around the buildings and island.  We were the only group on the island after it closed for the evening.

Unfortunately, the house prices are unbelievably high in San Francisco.   :-\
