Title: Banning, Alfred John - Private in Grenadier Guards
Post by: janjim on Tuesday 07 November 17 02:51 GMT (UK)
I wonder if anyone could help me please with regard to my cousin 2 removed, he was Private 24632 as a Guardsman in the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards during World War I.     We believe there is a memorial for him, Addenda Panel 165 at Tyne Cot Cemetery, Zonnebeke, Ypres.  He was presumed killed on the 12.10.1917 aged 23 years.
Wonder if anyone has access to more information on where he was killed and maybe any information from War Diaries.

From www.longlongtrail.co.uk:

Grenadier Guards

1st Battalion
August 1914 : in Warley, London District.
September 1914 : came under command of 20th Brigade, 7th Division.
7 October 1914: landed at Zeebrugge.
4 August 1915 : transferred to 3rd Guards Brigade, Guards Division.

Switching to the page for The Guards Division (http://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/army/order-of-battle-of-divisions/guards-division/):

1917

German retreat to the Hindenburg Line (14 Mar – 5 Apr)
    The Third Battles of Ypres
    – Battle of Pilkem (31 Jul – 2 Aug)
    – The Battle of the Menin Road (20 – 25 Sep)
    – The Battle of Poelcapelle (9 Oct)
    – The First Battle of Passchendaele (12 Oct)
The Battle of Cambrai (20 Nov – 3 Dec)

And there is a page regarding that battle:

Thank you KGarrad, this is the only information I've been able to ascertain regarding the Battalion that Albert Banning was in, haven't been able to get anything more on his records through Ancestry, with the exception of his medals and pay out to his Mother.

Just would have liked to have found out where and when he enlisted too.   He came from Reading.

Thank you very much, this has given me a better insight in regard to the Battle of Passchendaele anyway.    My son is going to the service at Ypres this Remembrance Day 11th Nov, and wanted to be able to give him as much information as possible.

About two-thirds of the WW1 Service Records were destroyed in a WW2 bombing raid :-\

Unfortunately it looks like his was one of the ones destroyed?

Guards Div records weren't at Arnside Depot they had own archives so didn't get burned.
There's a £30.00 cost to get a copy from Guards Archives.

You can download the war diary for the battalion from the national Archives for £3.50 at:

Not sure about your last post.

His record, for £30.00, will have his enlistment and other service dates.

The war diary, for £3.50, is very unlikely to mention him at all.  It will though add to the outline that K Garrad has given and thus give a flavour of his war.   The action on 12 October 1917 is described in some detail and started in the area of square U 12 on this link
