I have been researching this family because of a supposed link to my husband's ancestors. I have managed to find a fair amount of information via wills and various pedigrees etc and have some parish records to support these. There are some gaps though, some relatives mentioned in wills I have found nothing or very little so I am asking if anyone can help with the nitty-gritty details :) All contributions welcome and please forgive me if this is rather long winded, i wanted to include all the relevant information.
I have four generations of the family, but no records to definitely link the 3rd/ 4th to the first two :(

The will was contested by Ann Lovell, a cousin & next of kin of the deceased, wife of Nathaniel Lovell. Ann is probably a daughter of one of Thomas’ daughters but I can’t find any records on them.
ETA Samuel Holden mentions a wife Jane, and daughters Priscilla, Mary and Jane. I have found a couple of possibilities for Jane, but no connection to Stevensons; Jane may not even be the mother of his daughters

Apparently the Peacock Hotel was formerly Rowsley Hall, and was built for John Stevenson (Steward). I am interested because two branches of my family (Barkers and Travis) both lived there from around 1700. I have done a fair bit of research around there because of this!
Have you looked at the Parish Registers for Darley? There are a number of Stevensons baptised,married and buried there eg Elizabeth bapt 1584 father William. Not sure if you are familiar with the area but Darley was probably the closest church to Rowsley in the 15/1600s. I can look for any specifics if you want.

Hi Ruth, thanks for your reply. I have read that the Peacock was also used as the dower house for Haddon Hall. I have done all research online so far and am only familiar with the area via maps etc. Did your family live at the Peacock, or in that area? There are plenty of Stevenson records in the area, I have looked at Darley, in fact I have searched the whole of Derbyshire, neighbouring counties and London! It is frustrating to find several records for one sibling and their family and zip all for the others! I am especially interested in linking John (died 1655) with the later generations :)

The following is one excerpt from a description in Derbyshire RO
"The Peacock Hotel was originally known as Rowsley Hall. Built in the mid 17th century for John Stevenson of Little Rowsley, it was sold early in the 18th century to the Manners family, Dukes of Rutland who used it as a dower house for their Haddon Hall estate. It has been a hotel since the late 19th century and takes its name from the Manners crest over the entrance door."
I know that it was occupied by Jonathan Barker from @ 1705 from his will and childrens' baptism records. His brother John Barker and nephew Thomas Barker both went on to be stewards for the Duke of Rutland, but my ancestor was a joiner and carpenter apparently carrying on his business and living at Rowsley Hall. My other ancestor John Travis also had a business there - he was a tailor and weaver - again from wills of the period. It seems that they used the building as a house of multiple occupants!!
I agree it is very frustrating not being able to find the records you need. I'll keep an eye open for any Stevenson records, but haven't found anything yet which might be useful. I'll have to review some of my later lines - Jonathan had 12 children and I haven't researched them all yet!
My family for that period all come from around that area, and I know it fairly well, I'm only 3/4 hr away!
