Title: Cochran Brothers
Post by: tiawooster on Wednesday 08 November 17 15:22 GMT (UK)
Hi, I am trying to trace the deaths of 2 brothers.
Robert Cochran may have a e on the end  on the 1901 scotland census he was living with his sisters son and family at Milton, Glasgow, he was a Instrumet Maker.
His brother William Cochran found last on 1871 census living at home, he was a Upholsterer. I am unable to find any trace after these dates. Mary

You haven't given details of either birthyear for elimination purposes

Was he married?

Have you checked Scotlands People for deaths?

Who were their parents, where were they born, who was their sister, was she married, what was her married name, when did she marry/die, were either of the brothers mentioned on her marriage/death as witness/informant?

So many things to consider as Carole says for elimination purposes.

The surname Cochran(e) sounds Irish to me...

It may be an idea to consider other variations of the surname as many names can be misconstrued by different accents such as Cocharan, Coccorran or similar  :-\

brother William Cochran on 1871 census at home, he was a Upholsterer.

Where was home & who was 'at home'?

Were either brothers an informant on either parents deaths after 1871 whenever their parents died?

Father David Cochrane & Mother Agnes Buchanan
The last record I have for Robert is the 1901 census is 59 Maitland Street, Glasgow Milton, Lanarkshire, Scotland, his name is Cochrane on that.
The last record for William is 1871 census at the same address. I have got nowhere at Scotlands People, brought 2 marriage certificate for a William, but wrong person, I am at a loss. They are my great grandfathers brothers, have traced the rest of the family. Mary

There is a death for a Robert Cochrane in Garngadhill in 1915 which would match with a birth year of 1844. Can't easily see this individual in the 1911 census index on SP.

The surname Cochran(e) sounds Irish to me...
The Surnames of Scotland (1947) says, "Cochran, Cochrane. Of territorial origin from the five-merk lands of Cochrane (old, Coueran), near Paisley, Renfrewshire.

It quotes The Clans, Septs and Regiments of the Scottish Highlands (1908) as saying that "some MacEacherens who removed to the Lowlands adopted the surname of Cochrane to conceal their origin. This has misled some persons into imagining that there is a connection between the names or that Cochrane may be derived from an old spelling of MacEachern (MacKauchern)".

The Surnames of Scotland also lists 18 alternative spellings of the name.

A 'Robert Cochran' is Tenant/Occupier of a shop at 45(1/2) = half,  Maitland St. 1885 - 1915  but gone by 1920  :-\

Rosie,

That death you found 1903 could possibly be the right man as there's a John Cochran at 22 Lancefield Street 1905, brother maybe?

Would be good to know what the RCE says?

Occ. as Engineer's Gate Keeper could possibly fit with earlier census info. Machine Maker i.e. Engineering Industry  :-\

I have just realised, Mary may not be aware of the RCE/Correction being indicated (top left) when the image was downloaded & is then free to view  :-\

Rosie (saw red alert)...the VRs I looked at were only the Indexes i.e. would need a check for occ.

Annie

Rosie...ignore that as I misread it as 'have you found him' etc  ::)

Rosie,

I was wondering if any had emigrated or gone down south, anywhere out of Scotland where William & Robert may have gone but that's if all deaths with their years of birth have been discounted?

I think its one of those problems without a answer, I have John's death certificate, but it gives the wrong name for his father, so mistakes were made. Mary
