Title: Lookup Ulcombe - William Rose around about 1807?
Post by: David Boulding on Sunday 12 November 17 00:15 GMT (UK)
I am looking for the baptism of William Rose born around 1807 in Ulcombe. These registers do not appear to have been transcribed in Rightmove or elsewhere. Goes anyone have access so I can discover who William's parents were?

I have a possible connection;  Sophia Rose bc1810 in Ulcombe who gave her father as William Rose when she married in 1847 having been widowed.

Looks highly likely. I wish I could access the Ulcombe registers. My William Rose is my direct line, a Royal Marine.

Would the registers be held at the county archives?

Sophia Rose was my 3xgt.grandmother; I descend from a child of her first marriage.

William Rose and Ann Henderson married 1828 were my gt gt grandparents. They divorced in 1859 which William initiated. I don't know why but I can guess if he was away at sea for long periods. Pretty rare for those days...

Where did you find the divorce?  I can only find one for a William Rose in Lincolnshire; a farmer and publican.

Interesting. Looks like it's the wrong Rose family (possibly). Have you any more info on this?

I only had a brief look at the record on Ancestry which describes William as a farmer and publican from Lincolnshire.
From memory I don't think any children were listed.

Makes sense. I don't think "our" William had any money so wouldn't bother about divorce... Divorce suggests there is money to be had...

Hello,
I have just been reading all your posts and was wondering has there been any further information found?

John Rose born 1846 is my 2nd Great Grand Father. He is the son of William and Ann Rose (nee Henderson).

I have a William Rose born 1809, Ulcombe to Susannah Rose and also a Sophia Rose born 1811, Ulcombe to Susannah Rose. No father mentioned on either record.
Susannah Rose born 1790 Ulcombe, to John and Martha Rose (nee Poole).
John Rose and Martha Poole married 1781 Staplehurst.
John Rose born 1754 and died 1845 Ulcombe.
Martha Poole born 1762/1763 Staplehurst to Ann Poole - (Base born on record). And died 1853 Ulcombe.

I have a Susannah Rose married to William Hilton in 1812 at Maidstone. I have not been able to find much on this couple until i seen Sophia Henman's marriage certificate to William beall/Beale. One witness is named Susanna Callon/Callow. Is this her? Did William Hilton die and she remarried???
Am i on the right track?

David Boulding, Can i ask who the man is in your profile photo?

Thanks, Rose.

I'm busy at work at the moment so a very hasty reply.

I think William Rose and his wife Ann Henderson divorced (If I am correct and may not be). He was a Royal Marine and he's my direct line.

The gentleman in the photo (my avatar) is my father as a Lt in the Royal Navy (later Fleet Air Arm)

Thank you for letting me know. It's a wonderful photo. I have never seen or heard that before about William and Ann getting a divorce. I hope they didn't.

Sophia Rose, daughter of Susannah Rose, was baptised 28 January 1810 at All Saints, Ulcombe, Kent.

William Rose, son of Susannah Rose, was baptised 28 February 1808, at All Saints, Ulcombe, Kent.

The register images  for William and Sophia (faint but gives a birthdate 29/12/1809) are available on FindMyPast.

Yes that is where i got my info from, FindMyPast. Thanks nanny jan. Do you know anymore on Susannah Rose? Do you think that could be her, as a witness on Sophia's marriage certificate? I haven't been able to find out a lot on her. Or on her father, John Rose born 1754.

I have a poor copy of the marriage certificate (Susanna Henman/William Beal) but the name looks like Susan Callow.

There was  Susan Callow (bc 1825) living in Tenterden area (1851 census); GRO search on her children shows her maiden name as Goddard.  Likely marriage in 1844 to George Callow.

trish1120, Thank you. I see it wasn't our William and Ann..  :)

Thank you nanny jan for that info on Susannah and yes when i looked again on Sophia's marriage certificate it does say Susan. Not the right the Susannah, or the one i was hoping it to be.

I am trying to find more on Susannah Rose born 1790, who she married and if she had more children, besides William and Sophia. I only know at this time what i posted earlier of a Susannah Rose marrying a William Hilton in 1812.

I'm also looking for who John Rose born 1754 parents are? Have you had any luck in finding that? Hopefully it can all be found one day..  :)

The divorce... I thought it was the divorce papers on Ancestry but you are correct it's a different William Rose. But somewhere I have some papers that were copied for my father from his 1st cousin Stanley Rose (grandson of Wm & Ann and son of Thomas Price Rose RN) and there is mention of a divorce there. It's clear from some rather lurid and unpleasant newspaper reports that Wm & Ann didn't get on at all. They had the Albion at Boughton Monchelsea, Kent after he left the Royal Marines and until Wm went back to sea (probably to escape). William seems to be have been a very resonsible sort, his (I think Scottish) wife less so. Sadly I don't know where these papers are as my wife tidies things... I wish I could find it but after a couple of house moves it's difficult..
