Title: Seeking a Nun in New York.
Post by: KiwiHugh on Monday 13 November 17 19:17 GMT (UK)
Margaret Doherty was born 10 May 1873 at Craghey/Craghy, Breenagh, near Letterkenny, County Donegal, Ireland. Her parents were Edward and Bridget nee McCormick/McCormack. She was processed at Ellis Island in 1898 having arrived on the "State of Nebraska". Family history said she became a nun in New York. I am hoping she knew which order she intended joining before she arrived and indicated on arrival documents. As there are close to 50 or more orders in New York I can not bring myself to ask 49 Sister archivists to fruitlessly search their records.
My Mum reckoned there were two and the other was Mary but as I have found an older half sister Mary  here in NZ I think she may have the name wrong. If there is another she would have been born 1861/1862 as that is the only years she could slot in.

Hello,

Just to confirm with you - she is going to her cousin in Philadelphia, is that right? Is it family belief, that she then went to NY? Have you looked for her in US censuses?

Is this a possibility?

A Mary Doherty who is a nun in 1920.  She is a teacher.  Wrong arrival year though, and age is out by a couple of years.

Thanks Heywood.
This is the first I have tried looking for her. Between name changes on joining an Order and the vagaries of "family lore" thought it was a lost cause.
Does she say who her cousin is as as you know Irish records leave little scope for knowing who Edward or Bridget's siblings were.

Ooops sorry - that's a Mary, not a Margaret.

No just had the basic listing. Craghy was down to 12 households by 1901.

Would he not be Margaret’s uncle though -this one says cousin.

Sorry Poorly worded. Connell's Father was John who  made it thru to the 1901 census and was also in Craghy. Always assumed that he was Edwards brother but now I have linking documentation. :D
Pity about Connell being a no show. Was anticipating adding a swag of American relatives.
