Title: Esther Conroy Look Up Request for death notice/burial
Post by: River Tyne Lass on Wednesday 15 November 17 09:49 GMT (UK)
I was wondering if someone may possibly be able to look up a death notice or burial for Esther Conroy nee Miller, please.  Her death was registered during the March quarter of 1941 in Liverpool N.

She was married to my Great Uncle who was called Simon Joseph Conroy.  The latter was mostly known as only Joseph Conroy.  They were Roman Catholic.  Before the second world war they lived at 29 St Oswald's Gardens, Liverpool.

Perhaps if a burial could be found this could narrow things down for any possible death notice.

I will be very grateful for any information found.

42 Belmont Road is the address for Newsham Park Hospital, not private accommodation.

Can you or anyone else provide the section? If the section is private there is a look-up offer for family plots here:-

There are Liverpool Echo death notices covering that year online using a free search it's not coming up in the results so doubt there was one.

Hi,

Can you or anyone else provide the section?

It has 'Public section a' at the top of the page. The entry for Esther has just the grave number as given by Maureen, no section number shown with it.

The burial record is on Ancestry within 'Liverpool, England, Catholic Burials, 1813-1987'.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

David

She is buried in a public grave number 1169.  The same grave number is shown against Margaret Toole aged 86 on 30th Jan and Annie Clarke aged 68 on 1st Feb

Public graves have no headstone just a brick with the grave number embedded in the ground.  Very few of these markers are still visible being overgrown with grass and pushed into the ground by time/lawnmowers etc

You have to locate the plot number then go "rooting" for the marker

EDIT

Bernard James Donoghue aged 2 mths also in 1169 on 24th April

Thanks that's a shame if it had been a private grave Ozranga could have given the details of all family members buried in the grave.

Thank you everyone for your posts.  I really appreciate this.  I suppose in those days a hospital was often made to sound like a street address.

Shame there doesn't appear to be a death notice.  I was hoping to find out if Joseph was still alive at this point.

I don't think she would have had a private grave.  Joseph was or had been a miner by trade, so not well off.  Originally, from Birtley in Durham.

Many Thanks Everyone for your feedback  :)

Do you know Joseph’s birth year?

Perhaps if you obtained Esther's death certificate it might confirm whether she was a widow or not  :-\

You could also check the 1939 register for her to see if Joseph was still alive at that time - it would narrow any search for his death

Esther was nee Miller and marriage 1925  but I can't see any Conroy/Miller births.  Was Joseph previously married as he was 41 by then

Yes, you are right Carol.  In 1911, she was staying with Joseph's married sister (Mary Armstrong) and family and Joseph and their brother John were also there.  John served in the Great War.  He died in a War hospital in England on 5 February 1918.  He had been gassed in France and shortly afterwards developed inoperable cancer of the stomach.  His body was returned to Sacriston for burial at St Bede on 9 February 1918.  A while back I posted a Commemoration plaque photo for John (which I inherited from my Father who was the nephew of John).  This is posted on RootsChat on the WW1 In Memoriam.

Simon Joseph was one of 10 children (not all survived to adulthood) born to my Great Grandparents Simon Peter and Bridget Conroy nee McCabe.  (Simon) Joseph, Esther's husband was born on 29 September 1884 and baptised at St Joseph RC Church at Birtley, Durham on 5 October 1884.  He and Esther married at this Church on 12 September 1925.

Thank you everyone for your feedback posts.  I do appreciate this. :)

There is a 1939 index entry for an Esther Conroy in Liverpool with a birthyear of 1884 which might be worth your while having a look at

Thanks, Carol.  Yes, I have seen this.  Joseph was alive at this point too.  There seem to be several possible deaths for a Joseph Conroy in later years.  I wonder if there is any possible burial for Joseph at Yew Tree.  Or Esther died first I wonder if he would have stayed in Liverpool or perhaps he may have travelled back to the Northumberland/Durham area?

Hard to say really.  Esther's death was registered in the Liverpool North RD and there is a Joseph Conroy death in the same RD in 1951 but born 1879

Esthers age was out by 5yrs on her death reg

A Joseph Conroy aged 71  was buried at Yew Tree on 4.12.1948 - address 23 Tilly St Fairfield but seems to be in a private grave
