Title: Norman Campbell (police constable) & Mary Jane Evans Stewart - Pollock
Post by: Liviani on Saturday 18 November 17 23:42 GMT (UK)
I'm looking for descendants of this couple.

Mary Jane Evans Stewart was born in 1886, Montrose, Forfarshire (Angus). She had an illegitimate child with a Charles McKenzie in 1903, Inverkeilor, Angus. The child was also called Charles McKenzie - he was my grandfather. Mary and Charles never married.

For a while now I was trying to find Mary Stewart's death without success. Tried again tonight and took a chance on a Mary Jane E Stewart who died in Glasgow in 1950. This chance paid off and it was indeed her. Her death cert states that she died in an ambulance on Barrhead Road travelling to Victoria Infirmary.  The informant on her death cert is her son, a John S. Campbell.

Turns out she was married to a Norman Campbell, they married in 1914 at West Regent Street, Glasgow. Norman was born c.1882 his parents named on the marriage cert were; Angus Campbell (a Crofter) and Flora Campbell m.s Campbell. No further info on Angus and Flora.

At this time of Norman and Mary's marriage, Norman was living at 35 Riverford Road, Pollockshaws and Mary was living at 68 John Street, Glasgow.

I found a Mary Jane Stewart that is possibly her in the 1911 census, but I'm not 100% sure.

This Mary is living at 201 Holmlea Road, Glasgow with the following people;

Daniel Mackie, Head, 44, Foundry labourer. Born Montrose.
Mary Mackie, Wife, 43, Born Arbroath
Isabella, daughter, 20, Born Dundee
Daniel, son, 18, Born Glasgow
William, son, 15, Born Glasgow
Mary Jane Stewart, step-daughter, 25, Born Glasgow

The relationship doesn't seem right and she wasn't born in Glasgow, she was born in Montrose. However, the head and his wife originate from Angus. I can't seem to find anyone else that matches Mary in 1911. Still unsure if this is her.

Also relevant; Mary's parents were a John Stewart (1866 - 1944) and a Mary Stott (1866 - 1945). This couple lived their entire lives in Angus and were married to each other the entire time. They had a 50th wedding anniversary notice in a local newspaper complete with photograph. So the 'Step-daughter' thing doesn't seem right for Mary in 1911.

Also looking for other descendants of Norman Campbell and Mary Jane Evans Stewart. I don't have any other details of their children other than James.

Many thanks for anyone that can help me fill in these blanks.

Edit; Forgot to add that at the time of Mary's death in 1950 she was living at 12 Colinslie Road, Glasgow which is near Pollock country park. Her son James Campbell the informant was also listed at this address on her death cert.

Further edit: Norman Campbell was a police constable as noted on his marriage cert and Mary's death cert.

In 1918, on the Glasgow Electoral Register, Norman Campbell, constable is living at 2 Ellangowan Road, Pollock, living up the same close and possibly in the same flat as a Mrs Mary J Campbell.

In 1919, at the same address, again difficult to tell if they are all in the same house, or simply living up the same close, are...

Mrs Dolina Campbell
Mrs Mary J Campbell
Norman Campbell
Samuel Campbell

As these records only give the names of people who have reached voting age, Samuel can't be Norman's son, as you say Norman married in 1914.     He may be related in some other way.

Dolina Campbell may be easy to trace, because of her unusual first name.       ...I also noticed Norman Campbell, constable at 35 Riverford Road on an Electoral Register.       Have you ever heard of Dolina Campbell?

Hi Doddsie,

Many thanks for your help here.

I have recently found Norman Campbell on the 1911 census. Here is the household;

11 Craigie Street, Parish of Strathbungo, Govan Third, Glasgow.

Susan Alexander, Head, 37, Boarding House Keeper, Born Glasgow
Elizabeth Alexander, Sister, 32, Fish Merchant, Born Glasgow
Norman Campbell, Boarder, 27, Police Constable (Glasgow Corporation), Born Inverness, Kilmuir
Peter Mulvie/Melvie(?), 23, Police Constable, Born Argyll, Morvern

Interestingly it's noted that both Norman and Peter could speak both English and Gaelic.

So, I then found Norman in various census with his parents; Angus Campbell born circa 1833, Kilmuir and Flora Campbell born circa 1834 also Kilmuir.

In 1891, Norman is living at Kendrum, Kilmuir (Skye) with his parents Angus (a crofter as per Norman's marriage cert in 1914), Flora and a brother apparently also called Norman aged 16. Not sure if this is correct or not. Going further back in various census it appears Angus and Flora were at Kendrum for a few decades and prior to Norman being born I manage to get a list of other siblings;

All born Kilmuir, years approximate

Malcolm 1857
Flora 1860
John 1862
Marey 1866
Malcolm 1868 (another one)
Ann 1870
Murdo 1872
Norman 1 1875 (?)
Norman 2 1882 (the one I'm researching).

I feel that this list is not complete yet however, but I have seen no trace of any Samuel or Dolina's yet.

I also noticed Norman Campbell, constable at 35 Riverford Road on an Electoral Register.

Yes this is the same man, 35 Riverford Road is the address Norman gave on his marriage certificate in 1914.

Do you know the date of this record at all? So far I have him at 11 Craigie Street, Govan in 1911 and Riverford Road in 1914.

Many thanks, I will investigate these other names further.

Edit: Forgot to mention that in the 1901 census, Kendrum, Kilmuir there is a grandchild living with Angus and Flora Campbell; Flora Campbell, Grand-daughter, 6, born Lanarkshire.

Also questioning whether or not my Norman Campbell is in fact the son of Angus and Flora as Flora would've been approx 46-48 when she had Norman. Which isn't beyond the realms of possibility but still.

Not so much looking for info on Mary Jane Evans Stewart (my great-grandmother) as I have gone back quite far with that line.

Apologies for not making the info very clear but her parents are mentioned in the original post here;

I'm mostly looking for descendants of Norman and Mary and more info on Norman.

Thanks Liviani...

I was confused with the reference to 'Mary' rather than 'Mary J'

You have Mary J with 2 sons...John S & James...

"The informant on her death cert is her son, a John S. Campbell"

"Also looking for other descendants of Norman Campbell and Mary Jane Evans Stewart. I don't have any other details of their children other than James"

It does help if people have middle names to include a middle name initial when referring to that person as it saves confusion  ;)

Whoops made an error there.. I typed John when it should've been James on the original post near the top. Only have the one son, James S. Campbell. Will edit that post to correct it.

Thanks for the tips I will try and remember to do that from now on.

I found the following death indexed on SP, it seems likely this is Norman and Mary Jane's son.

CAMPBELL
JAMES STOTT
59
STEWART
1979
617/ 452
Glasgow, Martha St

The middle name of Stott makes sense as that was Mary Jane's MMN, and of course James S. Campbell's MMN being Stewart which also matches.

His age would give his year of birth as 1919/1920. This means Norman Campbell didn't die in WW1. I've been struggling to pinpoint Norman's death anywhere on SP. In 1950 when Mary Jane dies she is noted as a widow so he died prior to 1950.

Liviani,
I see Norman Campbell at, (as you know already) 26 Craigie St as a lodger in 1912-1913, then in 1914-1915 he is living at 35 Riverside Street in the company of 7 or 8 other Constables, plus a Fireman and a Driver.      All at the same address (35 Riverside St).

After this he is at 2 Ellangowan Road from 1915 till at least 1935, so he definitely survived WW1.        ....So, I would be looking for him dying after 1935, either at Pollock or even Renfrewshire.      I saw some of the records listing Ellangowan Road as Pollock, and at other times Eastwood.      That area is just on the border between Glasgow (Lanarkshire) and Renfrewshire.       Hope this helps a little bit.

P.S.     It seems to me that Riverside Street may have been a Police Station, simply because he was in the company of so many other constables at that address during 1914-1915 above.

Liviani,
Norman died 16 Oct 1942 at 12 Colinslie Road, Glasgow.    He was aged 60, a Police Constable, Retired, married to Mary Jane Stewart.      His father was Angus Campbell, Crofter and Flora Campbell, both deceased.     He had been confined to bed 4 years with Spinal Cord disease.          The informant was his son, who was also named Norman Campbell.

P.S.    James Stott Campbell was born in 1919 at Eastwood, and married Betty Dobson in 1945 at Pollock.

Thank you so much for this info Doddsie, cannot thank you enough. I can now fill in some of the missing gaps.
