Title: Who was Sir ISAAC WOLLASTON's wife?
Post by: Pelican on Tuesday 21 November 17 07:37 GMT (UK)
Sir Isaac Wollaston inherited the baronetcy and Loseby Hall in 1749. He had three children, Sarah b 1742 bap 1743, Anne b 1746, Isaac b 1749/50. From several places on the net I find his wife called Sarah Rowland, Sarah Rowland Gatward and Sarah Rowland Marche.  I can find no marriage for Isaac and Sarah for sure, although there is one in Cambridge in 1741 for Isaac Wollaston and Sarah Rowland Gatward. Fits in with the youngsters, but with the other names for Sarah around....!!!!
Sarah is described in one source as from the Isle of Wight, so Cambridge, seems odd.

Can anyone throw light on who Sarah was please?

There's a Chesterton marriage (6 Feb 1741) for Isaac Wollaston and Sarah Rowland Gatward, a widow, of Cambridge

As you say, from "A genealogical and heraldic history of the extinct and dormant baronetcies"                             Sir Isaac m. Sarah Rowland of the Isle of Wight, see:

It seems she was the daughter of Ralph March, and was first married to Pell Gatward.

Thank you all so much. I spent most of yesterday trying to sort that out!! She did not come from the Isle of Wight as I found from the same source as mowsehows found as well. Seemed such a major source to be wrong. Still we all make mistakes so why not major sources sometimes!! Then there were the different names!

That was absolutely fabulous ShaunJ. I did not find that one. Two marriages.

Thanks too Trish, you answered the question that started the search for Sarah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did Sarah Rowlands have a niece - apparently not, her brothers died.

What a tragic family. Sarah's brothers died as babies. Her parents die and leave her an orphan when her mother dies when she was six years old. She marries and loses her first husband. She marries Sir Isaac Wollaston and he dies in 1750. She dies in 1753 at only 38 years old. Their son Isaac dies in 1756 only six years old. There were two more orphans, Isaac's two sisters, Sarah and Anne, who both become heiresses and marry having families of their own thank goodness.

Again my thanks

Well answers bring questions as we know, but this one is an oddity.......!!! Thought it might amuse you all. We all get them!

Checking out Sarah March Gatward Wollaston's timeline I noticed that :

Pell Gatward died without offspring in 27 Oct 1741 (They did have a son, but he died in 1735, another tragedy for Sarah).
Sarah Rowlands March Gatward married Sir Isaac Wollaston on 6 Mar 1741

There must be a transcription error here and there is no image I can check sadly.

Sarah and Isaac's first child, Sarah, was born on 19 Nov 1742.  So therefore it is more likely that they married on 6 March 1742.

Transcribers do a wonderful job and we are all so grateful to them, Like the rest of us they make mistakes!

Not sure why but in those days the calendar was different, seems very confusing to me;

Quote;

During the years of transition between the first introduction of the Gregorian calendar in continental Europe and its introduction in Britain, contemporary usage in England started to change.[3] In Britain 1 January was celebrated as the New Year festival,[8] but the "year starting 25th March was called the Civil or Legal Year, although the phrase Old Style was more commonly used."[3] To reduce misunderstandings about the date, it was normal in parish registers to place a new year heading after 24 March (for example "1661") and another heading at the end of the following December, "1661/62", to indicate that in the following few weeks the year was 1661 Old Style but 1662 New Style

It all changed again in 1752 :)

Yes that could be the problem. Really causes some headaches!!

Pell Gatward dies 27 Oct 1741.
Sarah Rowlands March Gatward marries Isaac Wollaston 6 Mar 1741.
Sarah and Isaac have little Sarah on 19 Nov 1742.

Something wrong with that timeline! If the 6 Mar 1741 old style should be 6 Mar 1741/2 new style, that could be OK.

Heiresses did not last long in the marriage stakes those days!!!

As you say, Trish, confusing!!!

1741 ended on 24 March. 1742 began on 25 March. Thus it was until our calendar changed in 1752 which was a short year of 282 days.

Ok so everything birth/marriage/death that happened early 1742 up until 24 March was listed as 1741 or 1741/42.
Thanks ShaunJ :)

Thanks ShaunJ that makes sense of it now. So pleased it was not a transcription error.

Putting this in the new style calender it would read:

Pell Gatward dies 27 Oct 1741.
Sarah Rowlands March Gatward marries Isaac Wollaston 6 Mar 1742.
Sarah and Isaac have little Sarah on 19 Nov 1742.

Thank you too for the Wikepedia link. That was an interesting article. I often wondered why the UK tax year starts on 6 Apr. Although I realised that for many things the end of the year was 31st March even though the year started on 1 Jan. Living in Oz for over forty years this had slipped to the back of my mind. Here it is equally mad, the year starts on 1 Jan but the end of the financial year is 30th June!

The 6 Apr in UK did have some useful offshoots. I do not know what happens now but in the fifties if one got married at the end of the tax year a man could claim tax benefit for his wife for the whole of that year.  A lot of marriages took place the weekend before the end of the tax year and the few weekends before!! When Easter was early Churches were busy. We were married on Easter Monday at the end of the tax year.

I suppose that may be a Rootschat style question in 100 years - why were there so many marriages in March and early April!!!!!!!!
