Just been carrying out some research on an ancestor who was born circa 1864.
Been looking at the 1911 census and he is listed with his wife plus four children, they are aged 7, 6, 3 and 3. Three are listed as nurse children and the fourth child being listed as adopted. All four children have different surnames to the head of the house and his wife.
As the 6 year old child is listed as adopted I took the opportunity to send for his birth certifiate but this has arrived bearing his surname as detailed on the census.
Two queries I would like help and assistance on please. Firstly, what are Nurse Children? Secondly, if the 6 year old child was adopted as written on the census would they assume the name of the head of the house and his wife? The reason I ask is because I have accquired a copy birth certificate using the details given on the census and it has arrived giving his surname as per the census and not his adopted surname as in the head of the house and his wife.

Nurse children, as I understand it are the same as what we'd now call foster children.
Legal adoption as such didn't start until 1926, so anything before that would have been arranged informally and there won't be any records. It may be that the child they listed as "adopted" was living there on a more permanent basis than the nurse children. Does it give the name of both his parents on his birth certificate?

It makes sense now when you mention the comparison with modern day foster children. The birth certificate does list both parents names and the occupation of the father, however a quick search for them in 1911 returns too many people of the same name living in a similar area. :(

Does it give his mother's maiden name, if so you may be able to find a marriage and narrow it down that way? If you want to give details we may be able to help.
It does seem a bit strange that if he had both parents he was then adopted, unless one or both of the parents died after he was born. Have you tried seeing if there is any connection between his birth parents and adoptive parents?
