Hi ALL,
Help needed in trying to locate a marriage of a Charles WOOD(b.????) and Elia WEBB(b.1844 Harescombe?, Gloustershire)(both my x2 GGP).
They had 4 children, Harry Charles b.1873, Frederick(b.1876), Eliza Emily(b.1877), Sophia Rose(b.1880) and Edith Maria(b.1885). On Harry's, Eliza, Sophia and Edith's birth certifcates it states that Charles WOOD is their father and their mother is Eliza WOOD formerly WEBB.
Charles occupation was a carpenter then a carman(stated on birth certificates). The 1881 census shows Eliza the head of the family with Henry, Frederick, Eliza Emily and Sophia Rose living in Westmoor Green, Tatsfield, Surrey but no Charles. Eliza's occupation was a Laundrress.
Then in the 1891 census, Eliza is the head of the family with Frederick, Emily, Sophia and Edith, now living at 27 Forester Road, St.Saviours, Croydon , Surrey and again no Charles however, she now lists her condition as Widow.
I did find one marriage certificate for a Charles WOOD and Elizabeth WEBB in 1884 at Pains Hill Chapel(Baptists), Godstone, Surrey but their ages don't add up(too young especially Eliza) plus Eliza was born to Eliza WEBB her mother but no father registered so father sataed on this marriage cert I belive is incorrect. Eliza was baptised in 1859(full age) at Limpsfield, Surrey. Although her stated birthplace on the 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1881 is given as Hunscombe/Hurst, Gloucestershire, which I can't figure out as well, as her mother was born in Surrey to a John WEBB and Mary HALL.
Any help with this would be much appreciated.
Regards,
Jon

That's 5 children I think, rather than 4?
Is "Frederick b 1876" actually Samuel Frederick Wood mmn Webb, birth reg Sep qtr 1875 Croydon?
-
Edith Maria Wood mmn Webb birth reg Sep qtr 1883 Croydon?
-
I see that Sophia Rose and Edith Maria were baptised together at St Saviour's, Croydon on 17 Nov 1887.
Parents: Charles Wood (carpenter) and Eliza, of 84 Wilford Rd, Croydon.
-
Yes baptism and address correct
-
Where have you found Eliza in the 1871 census - please can you point us to that?
-
I think the 1871 ref is RG10, 838, 50, 7 In Tatsfield with mother and stepfather ELiza and Joseph Gilbert. Surname transcibed on ancestry as Well
-
Yes, that 1871 reference is correct as Eliza Gilbert is her mother Eliza WEBB. Note on the same page the eldest daughter Ellen Elizabeth(now WOOD) is recorded as grand daughter living with Joseph and Eliza GILBERT.

Jon

Ah yes. I see there's a baby Ellen Elizabeth Webb aged 1 in 1871, who seems to be Eliza's:
Baptised at Tatsfield, 3 Apr 1870
Ellen Elizabeth Webb, daughter of Eliza, of Tatsfield.

Cross-posted, but I think you mean it is in 1881 that Ellen is listed as granddaughter of the widowed Eliza Gilbert (in 1871 she's entered as step-child in Joseph Gilbert's household).
-
The mysterious Gloucestershire birthplace for Eliza is rendered as "Heirscomb" in the 1861 census - so perhaps it's Harescombe? Registration district would be Wheatenhurst, but I can't see a birth reg for her.
-
Yes but can't work out why this is the case since her mother and grand parents are all born in and around Limpsfield, Surrey.
I believe I have her mother Eliza on the 1841 census as a servant at a school or workhouse maybe, in Bletchingley, Surrey registration district of Godstone, Surrey.

Out of interest, what name did the marriage Eliza give for her father? The fact that there is a father named on the marriage cert doesn't mean that the bride wasn't illegitimate- many of them made up names. I've got one who used her own surname and her stepfather's forename.

Which Eliza are you referring to? We haven't found a WOOD/WEBB marriage yet.

This couple are most likely the family living in Godstone, all children born with mmn WEBB.

Morning,
Just to add that Eliza WEBB, the one for whom I am looking for a marriage certificate, was baptised on 27th March 1859 as an ADULT to Eliza WEBB mother and single woman in St.Peter's, Limpsfield, Surrey.
