Morning All,
I seem to remember seeing somewhere someone mentioning a free account on Ancestry.co.uk. Is that a thing or am I making it up?
I'm looking for a way I can get the monthly newsletter and more importantly, notice of up coming offers such as free access to fold 3 over remembrance weekend (that I missed until the week after).
Thanks for the help,
Michael

I have an account, but no longer pay a subscription! ;D
But I think you have to have a subscription first?
-
Ok thanks.
I'm in the same situation with FindMyPast.

This article explains how to create a free Ancestry account:
https://familyhistorydaily.com/genealogy-resources/ancestry-com-offers-600-free-searchable-collections/ (https://familyhistorydaily.com/genealogy-resources/ancestry-com-offers-600-free-searchable-collections/)
Although this refers to the .com version of the site, when I tested the provided link (in a private browsing session, as I already have a paid account) it prompted me to redirect to the .co.uk site.
I didn't proceed further, but hopefully this is what you need.

You can take up their free offer when you start with Ancestry and cancel the renewal payment before the end of the trial period. Or their is the guest account you need to get someone to invite you to their family tree and if you are not already a member it ask you to sign up
For the newsletter click your user name and in email preferences their is an option to tick to receive the newsletter hth Wendy

I'm in the same situation with FindMyPast.
The relevant FindMyPast .co.uk page is titled "Register for free" and provides a checkbox to opt in/out to newsletter subscription, which looks like a more straightforward approach.

Rattus that sounds like exactly what I am after, I'm just about to head out for the morning but I'll try it this afternoon.
Wendy I do have a friend with an account so if it doesn't work I'll try that.
Thanks a lot everyone.

There is also the possibility of using Ancestry Library Edition at your local library?
Some libraries also offer a similar FindMyPast offer.
North Shields Library offers access to both! ;D
-
Thanks Wendy, I do use the library ones but I want the newsletter emails as well

I get emails from Ancestry as a 'member' 99% of them are about buying their DNA product ::)
-
That doesn't sound very good.
I did look on their Twitter feed and that was the same.

In that respect, Ancestry is like a mithering brat. Must have had hundreds of them - seems like several a week - their head numpty hasn't got the message that, if I haven't signed up by now I'm not going to.

Just looking at past emails from them, on the 4th of each month there is one about new record collections the rest are trying to sell DNA testing
-
I receive 2 or 3 messages a day asking me if I want to buy the DNA kit....yes I do! But they won't let me buy it because I don't live in the UK.
And so the emails go on... >:(

An alternative approach to find out about offers could be to follow more general blogs, for example:
- Lost Cousins newsletter - https://www.lostcousins.com/ (https://www.lostcousins.com/)
- Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter - https://blog.eogn.com/ (https://blog.eogn.com/)
- The Genes Blog - http://britishgenes.blogspot.co.uk/ (http://britishgenes.blogspot.co.uk/)
If you follow the links you can see the articles the sort of articles they post.

Sorry for the late reply, I have been off for quite a while.
I'll have a look at the sites mentioned, hopefully I'll find what I want.
Thanks a lot,
Michael
