Title: Christmas Gift for dad
Post by: lewisa on Saturday 02 December 17 17:11 GMT (UK)
So christmas is coming up, and my dad looooves researching his roots in the UK.
He lives in Sweden, so he can't really make use of going to local librarys in England to find out more.

So he uses ancestry to help him out!
But here's my question! Is ancestry the best way? I looked at findmypast.com
It claims to have more, but does it?

Any other suggestions to a great gift for him? He's done a lot on his ancestry tree, though I'm not 100% sure it's the right people he's found. Haha.

What does everyone here use?

It depends on the area of research which is of interest to your father.  Ancestry are better for some areas, and FindMyPast for others.  As he already uses Ancestry (and I assume he has a subscription), then look at FindMyPast and see whether anything grabs you.  From the Home page, you can look at the A-Z index of holdings.

He loves anything he can find! There are little news clippings on ancestry, more birth records and that kind of thing. So he can easily build up a tree on ancestry, but there is not much information behind everyone that he has found!

Possible problems with Ancestry are the "hints" and "connections".  :-X :-X  Personally, I avoid them and prefer to do my own research   :o

FindMyPast does have access to the British Newspapers Library, and adds to the content on a regular basis.

I have access to both Ancestry and FindMyPast - my lot originate in Yorkshire, but part of the old West Riding has now moved to the new North Yorkshire  :(  so Ancestry cover West Riding, and FindMyPast cover North and East Yorkshire, plus they have the BT's for all Yorkshire  :)

I have no knowledge of the coverage for any of your father's interests.   :-\

Hi and welcome to Rootschat, was your father born in the UK or his parents married in the UK, what has he got as a link from the UK to Sweden?

My dad only moved to Sweden, because my mom is Swedish.
My dads origins are from Wales, on his fathers side. Lewis/Mullens
And his moms side are from London. Jones/Payne
But because of the war both my grandparents relocated to Somerset.

Hi,
Does your dad know about this free site ? Far more useful than ancestry newspaper cuttings
http://newspapers.library.wales

My ancestry is from Wales (and Ireland)
I have been with ancestry for years ( and also had subs with FindMyPast)which is neither here nor there ( as neither sites cover everything for Wales , and you really don't need them for Ireland).
I can't say I've ever found any newspaper clippings on ancestry for my family ( they, ancestry, do not have much coverage, FindMyPast has access to British newspapers)

Seeing as he has access to ancestry, here are a couple of my suggestions for gifts for him:
A sub with British newspapers online
https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk

A gift token (this can be homemade) for BMD certs ( ie you can set an amount on said gift token and pay for all  the certs he wishes to order) -I'd love this one myself! (Who wouldn't    ;D

A good book in the area(place) that he is interested in, this could be a history book of the area. Or maybe a mining book if your ancestors are miners in the area and so on.
These are just some really general examples  https://national-library-of-wales-gift-shop.myshopify.com/collections/all/family-history
Or
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?k=+welsh+family+history+

A family history magazine subscription.

These are just a couple off the top of my head, other rootschatters probably have lots more too
Kind regards :)

I am in Australia, so a similar position to your father.  I have ancestry and now and again get find my past.  I use it mainly for the newspapers, they have given me such a great insight to my family's history.  Finding family in 1939 is also helpful.

There are some things that are not online though that are of interest so another suggestion is paying for research in a particular area or line.

Or what about a DNA testing kit?
