Welcome to Rootschat  :)

What country did Ivan live in, and was his surname Vivian (as per your post) or Vivians (as per your heading)?

There's an old post on an Ancestry message board from someone who is a grandchild of his, saying he was born 25 Oct 1916 and died 19 Oct 1999.  Suggested father is Thomas Henry Vivian.  Again there is no indication of geographical location.

Ancestry has some NZ records you may wish to have a look at, including the birth index.

Electoral roll for Dunedin, 1946 - you may want to investigate possible family links between these households:

Elizabeth Emma Vivian, married

131 Maclaggan St

Winifred Isabell Vivian, married

22 Wallace St

Birth registrations can be amended later for several reasons.  One example is if the child is born before the marriage and registered in mother’s name , then after the marriage it can be reregistered in father’s name.  Usually this happens within a few years ... it is surprising that it was amended 60 years later.   Perhaps there was a typo on original registration eg Ian instead of Ivan

Are you able to go to the archives to view (and photograph) these documents?  If not I believe there is someone on NZ board who does so.

The divorce papers should have marriage certificate (which will have parents names) and also details of the children.  (Well Australian ones do - haven’t seen any NZ ones but I assume they are similar)

When ordering from BDM's it is better to order the "printout"as it is a photocopy of the register entry and is not prone to transcription errors,

NZ divorce records now have a 100 year restriction on them

Access Statement:

Divorce files are restricted for 100 years from the date of last paper. Access requires written permission from the Dunedin High Court.

Dissolution of Marriage or Civil Union Records

Under both High Court Rules and Family Court Rules former parties to a marriage or a civil union have an unrestricted right to obtain a copy of the order dissolving the marriage or civil union. These dissolution orders can be viewed at, or copies obtained from Archives New Zealand on production of sufficient proof of identity (photo identification e.g. passport/drivers’ license).
