The following appears in the Ide Apprentice Register:
"Apprenticed Ref 45 Apprenticed on 21 April 1815 apprentice Ann NAPPER Sex Female age 9 years parents W NAPPER of Ide master Philip Helyer of estate Higher Widdon trade yeoman of Ide".
My research suggests that this is likely to be Ann NAPPER baptised Ide on 23 December 1804 d/o William and Mary NAPPER. A William NAPPER and Mary DEAN were married after banns on 26 January 1804. Mary signed, William made his mark.
Ann NAPPER, single woman of Ide baptised her son William Henry NAPPER on 14 June 1840.
My questions:
How long would someone normally be apprenticed for?
What would "master" in this context mean?
Where is "Higher Widdon" in Ide?
Is this "Philip Helyer" likely to be the same person as the Philip Hellyer baptised Ide on 3 June 1798, s/o James and Ann Hellyer?
I found the following:
Phillip Hellyer in the 1844 Pigots Directory - Coal Dealer in Coombe street;
In 1850 in Whites Directory at Coombe street
In 1852 and 1853 - Slaters Directory of Berks, Corn and Devon in Coombe street
Is this PH likely to be the same person as above?
Slaters Directory of 1852-1853 has an Ann NAPPER at what appears to be "Havling?",
Any assistance appreciated.

How long would someone normally be apprenticed for?
Apprenticeships lasted for 2 to 7 years’ depending on the particular trade after which the apprentice became a journey man.
What would "master" in this context mean?
Basically apprenticeships evolved by way of a contractual agreement between the master and apprentice initially in a few trades. The regulation was through indentures that were legally binding documents. Indentures were written and agreed, binding the servant and master and in which the master took responsibility for the apprentice’s training and welfare and provided him with accommodation.

Hi,
If you look at map on Google for Ide, there is a Whiddon Farm and a Whiddon Lane so probably has a connection with the Widdon you mentioned. Ide is still a village despite its nearness to Exeter, Lets hope it stays that way.

The 1841 census has William Napper (Ag Lab) age 60, Mary his wife age 57, Ann daughter age 40 and grandson William age 1 at Shorts, Ide, St Thomas.
I have looked for Shorts on a google map but unable to locate.
Grateful if someone could tell me what/where is Shorts, Ide?

Yet to spot "Shorts".

Put "Ide" in "Type a Placename" and click on drop down box returned (only 1 hit in this instance!).
When modern map returned just click on map (any spot) to generate old maps and click on year of choice.

Looking at the '41 Census, there are 8 households recorded with the address "Shorts, Ide, St. Thomas".
