Title: History of Early Dunedin Photographer.......
Post by: minniehaha on Thursday 07 December 17 08:25 GMT (UK)
Hi Everyone,

I have some old photographs with "Allen & Son, Photographers, Princes St. Dunedin" on the reverse.

A web search has only found the following:

http://canterburyphotography.blogspot.co.nz/2009/03/allen-joseph-weaver.html

The design surrounding the name and the printing of the name shown here is identical to that on my photographs, so a connection I am sure. However I have not found anything about "Allen & Son" other than one photograph on the above website.

Just trying to date my photographs.

Photography in New Zealand, by Hardwicke Knight, has a 2 page article on Joseph W Allen, active in the 1860s, 1870s and 1880s in Dunedin. The article says that Joseph took his son into the business, but it doesn't appear to have continued after the 1880s.

There is a burial in Dunedin's Southern Cemetery, in 1868, for Thomas ALLEN, Joseph's father, who was also a photographer. The Otago Daily Times of 29 April 1868 has a death notice for Thomas.
