Title: 1871 census
Post by: tjh1989 on Saturday 16 December 17 19:35 GMT (UK)
Hi

Can anyone make out James Robson's place of birth (surrounded with a red box) in the following: https://imgur.com/a/QI8EY? Ancestry has transcribed it as Darley but I can't find any place in Northumberland with this name.

Many thanks

Tom

It's come up too fuzzy to see clearly.

My guess would be Dewley ;D

Dewley - Throckley [Township] - See: Newburn [Parish]
    (RegD/SubD) Castle Ward/Stamfordham - See: Northumberland Central
    (OS Grid Ref) NZ1667, (Lat/Lng) N 55° 00.104', W 001° 44.521'
    (Maps) Lndrngr 88, Pthfndr 548, Explr 316
6 miles [10 Km] WNW of Newcastle

From the wikipedia entry for Newburn:
Though some claim the village's name comes from the Old English for "New Fort or Castle" (burh or burg being the Old English for fort or castle), the name is more commonly thought to have come from the Dewley or New Burn, which runs through the village.

I agree that it's Dewley....the 1861 census for James says he was born in Newburn, Northumberland and as KGarrad has pointed out, the Dewley burn runs through this area. :)

Andrea

G'day Tom,

Image is available on FamilySearch Bishop's Transcripts for Newburn. Entry no. 970 on image no. 447 of film no. 4047396. Abode appears to be written Dulay which also appears as Duley on the same page.

Bruce.
