Title: Thomas Cornell (Cornwall) mystery !!!
Post by: avidt on Monday 18 December 17 23:53 GMT (UK)
Hi

My grandmother Annie Cornell was born in Great Shelford in 1880 and I have managed to trace back to Thomas Cornell born Great Shelford in 1698 son of Thomas Cornwell and Sarah

I managed to find a marriage of Thomas C of Great Shelford and Sarah Free of Hildersham who married in Wimbish Essex in 1695. which fits perfectly particularly the entry   "of Great Shelford)

However I cannot find a birth in Great Shelford, there is however a baptism of a Thomas Cornwall in Great Wilbraham in 1671. I would be grateful for any help in unravelling this mystery.

Many thanks

David ;)

freeReg has this baptism as 5 Nov 1671 Great Wilbraham, Thomas Cornwell, father Thomas mother Anne

It seems the two Great's are only about six or seven miles apart as the crow flies, so it seems a strong possible to me.

I've only just picked up this thread having been off-line for the past two months. The possible connection to Thomas CORNWELL of Great Wilbraham is a complete red herring I'm afraid. As already mentioned, that Thomas was married to an Anne rather than Sarah and they had least three children all baptised in St Nicholas Church, Great Wilbraham: Thomas 5 Nov 1671, Thomasin 18.1.1673, & John 22 Apr 1679. Thomas the elder died in 1712 and was buried in Great Wilbraham on 13 March. So obviously not the Thomas CORNWELL carpenter of Great Shelford who was buried there in St Mary the Virgin churchyard on 10 Jan 1728. His widow Sarah followed on 16 Feb 1728 so his estate (value £4.19.6d) was administered by their daughter Elizabeth (bap 1 Nov 1706).

Hi Peter

many thanks for that corrected information, so I am still looking for where my Thomas came from when he married Sarah Free. My Cornell line comes from my Paternal grandmother Annie Cornell born in Railway Cottage Granhams Lane Great Shelford. She was the last of my firect line born in G S. Her siblings were all born round various station on the railway where her father worked. I have a picture of my great greatgrandfather John Cornell born GS in 1835.

Were your Cornwells in G S.?

Kind Regards

David

Hello David,

Happy to have been of some small help. My CORNWELL own family line originated in Fulbourn but I have ended up researching all CORNWELL (plus variations) families in the ancient county of Cambridge & the Isle of Ely. I will send you a personal message about it.
